Welcome to /flt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try Linux, you can:

0) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

I installed SteamOS on a VM and shorty after booting I get a splash screen, some retarded audio like water dripping and then the screen just goes black.

I figure it's a fuckup with the video drivers, but online solutions point to picking recovery mode with problem.

Problem: No grub in this distro, it goes direcly to the splash screen.

When I try to swtich to a tty within the captured VM it switches my main Arch tty instead.

Anyone have any ideas?

Your image might've been corrupted. Double check the hashes and try redownloading and reinstalling.

The image checksum is fine. I was to get Grub to pop up by just spamming the reset button somehow. Weird. I got into recovery mode, but now it's just stuck at the splash screen.

Is it worth trying to reinstall?

I think so. Try recreating the virtual machine and making sure you select the recommended settings for SteamOS.

Allright thanks.

aside from the linux command line, are there any other good books out there for someone wanting to learn as much as possible about linux?

hi guys, I'm running elementaryOS and after updating the file manager the usb connections disappeared from the sidebar. I can't even mount the device. I figure I gotta go in and configure the fstab or something but I'm not currently at my immediate work station. I'm actually practicing for a math test I have this afternoon. I was wondering if someone could share a few quick troubleshooting tips for this kind of problem? I tried googling but I got nothing out of it. Just a bunch of mac threads and some results for people hiding the sidebar with ctrl b and/or f9. I don't think it's so big a deal I can't wait a few hours finish my test and then get to it but if I could get some tips on where to work on the problem real quick it would help me focus on my studies.
