Hey /g/ents. I have an old Dell Latitude D820 and I'm looking to make it run as fast as possible so I can use the internet, do some word processing, and maybe play some Roller Coaster Tycoon without being annoyed. Can I still run WinXP and achieve this goal or do I need to install xubuntu or another light operating system? Is there a better old compatible processor I can add?
pls help

Just install something like Damn Small Linux and get it over with, it will make it much faster

Install a Linux such as Void or Ubuntu MATE.
Alternatively, run Windows 7 on it. 7 is pretty usable on D820 laptops with 2-4GB RAM.

is there any merit in keeping a windows xp partition or will that slow me down. Also is there anything to gain by adding a better processor or an ssd

Arch or Arch, Or maybe even try Arch.
You could also download Arch and install Arch onto the laptop.

I have that same machine.
Install Debian Jessie With LXDE. it works like butter.

He wants the laptop to be able to do shit, dumbass.

>implying

fucking exactly,
>implying he will be able to do anything with arch linux installed

As ssd will help you, but putting a processor in that thing? Not worth the work op. An ssd will help but it's still stretching it because that laptop is probably only worth like 50usd

So you admit that you are an obese ubuntu user with a BMI of 94?
Arch

>ad hominem
kekekekek
you know damn well all of /g/ is either grotesquely fat, or hideously underweight
that still doesn't change the fact that arch is shit for the sake of being shit.
>hurrr i like to sit here all day waiting for something to break, so i can then spend an hour fixing it, afterwards bragging about it on /g/ or my IRC circlejerk
OH SHIT, I THINK XORG JUST BROKE AGAIN
