Of course, Terry's a master.
His code is extremely tight, Linux can manage 800k context saves, switches, and reloads on his hardware per second, but TempleOS does 4.5 million a second on the same hardware.
He says it could be way faster if they'd allow a 'modern speed' access to the VGA and other legacy devices that wasn't bandwidth limited. But it's still almost 5x as fast as Linux.

Since were thinking of creating a general, I think using TempleOS would be a great tool to learn lower level programming, and it would be fun to tour the os and read the source as a group with someone screencasting and everyone on a mumble server, or jewgle hangouts if no one cares.

Generally in modern operating systems you have a kernel which is the software that interacts with your hardware. On top of that you have what is called userspace. Userspace programs have to communicate with the kernel in order to access stuff from the hardware.
The kernel provides abstraction from the hardware to userspace programs much like how you steering wheel and pedals in your car give you access to make the car turn, accelerate, break, change gears etc but you don't have to know how that works under the hood in order to use it.
The levels of abstraction are broken into layers called rings, where ring-0 is where the kernel resides.

Basically in the bad old days there was nothing to stop you, or any software, from crashing the machine or doing anything malicious. There were viruses in those days too BTW, but it wasn't nearly as much of a problem.
The difference though, is that the user was programming their own machine a lot of the time, and in those innocent days the idea of the computer protecting the user from himself would have been laughed at in a home computer environment.
