what are /g/'s thoughts on G SYNC monitors?

are they THE FUTURE of displays

is the difference like night and day? i need to see one in action to really decide but no one i know has one
>>
>>54565932
They just need to drop the gamer drivel and make it a common feature of monitors.

Movies would be so much better without the pan-shake effect from going from 24 hz to 60 hz. I really hope that it is the future, but I'm reluctant due to it now being called a 'gamer' feature.
>>
G-Sync is proprietary horseshit. FreeSync is where it's at.
>>
whatever 'gamer feature' its just a label it doesnt really change the tech for me

i was looking fucking monitors are like 820$

what is free sync
>>
>>54566137
G-Sync is proprietary and requires a physical hardware component in the monitor to work. FreeSync is a similar open standard that doesn't require additional hardware and can be implemented freely by any monitor manufacturer using DisplayPort 1.2a or later.

G-Sync is arguably better, but it is also more expensive and only works with Nvidia cards, so most manufacturers opt not to implement it. FreeSync works with anything that isn't Nvidia because Nvidia hates you and intentionally wont implement it so they can hawk their proprietary bullshit.
>>
>>54566428
yeah nvidia is kinda gay
>>
>>54566428
FreeSync functions at 144Hz while GSync limits you to 120Hz.
Nvidiocy can't even compete, much less be arguably better.
>>
>>54566428
Would be nice to consider AMD but I want the option to install Linux instead and I hear they won't lift a finger to give better drivers for Linux.
>>
>>54566560
That's backwards. AMD routinely contributes to the Linux kernel and open source radeon drivers. Nvidia does not and only ships their proprietary driver.
>>
>>54565932
yes it is.
40fps games gsync feel the same as 60fps with vsync. shit is nice especially in combination with 120-144hz monitores.

freesync/gsync doesnt matter, I hope thats not the point here. both technologies are good.
>>
>>54566428
FreeSync absolutely requires additional hardware - i.e. - the scaler that supports it. The only difference is that anyone can implement it.
>>
>>54565932
I still don't understand what it does exactly

So lets say you are at 40 fps, how does it feel different on a gsync monitor compared to a non g sync monitor?
>>
>>54566640
Ordinary monitor will refresh at 60Hz no matter your fps number, so you get either input lag (with v-sync) or tearing.
Variable refresh rate monitor will refresh your 40fps at 40Hz.
>>
>>54566590
Then why do I hear people have more problems with AMD graphics than Nvidia? That if you want to effectively use your graphic card performance you must choose Nvidia when using Linux?
>>
>>54566685
Is the input lag really noticable though? Does it actualy feel like a smoother experience beyond placebo?
>>
>>54566540
The gsync monitor op posted is literally 165hz you fucking retard
>>
>>54566697
Because historically the Nvidia driver still functioned better even though it was closed source and proprietary. That's not really the case anymore.
>>
>>54566701
the difference in sf5 for example is 4f with vsync on and off. 4f = 64ms of extra lag.
dunno if you play competitive games but 4f are a lot if you know what you are doing.

dunno how big the difference is in other games is but I suppose its the same.
>>
>>54566776
>dunno if you play competitive games
I do, not anything seriously though
>>
>>54566540
I have a 144hz gsync dell monitor.
What the fuck are you talking about, shill?
>>
Reminder that until a 16:10 IPS G-sync/Freesync monitor exists, they are all plebian trash
>>
>>54566704
>>54566791
Not with GSync enabled. Congratulations, you didn't research before you bought, typical Nvidiot.
>>
>>54566832
>gaming at 16:10
>>
>>54566832
buy an ultrawide if you want productivity poorfag

they are essentially 2x 4:3 monitors which is objectively superior to 16:10
>>
>>54566749
So what's a good AMD GPU to use in Linux? Or are the new ones just behind the corner?
>>
>>54566864
lol wut?

I'm using a PG279Q @ 165hz with gsync enabled RIGHT NOW
>>
>>54566903
Usually newer cards take a while to catch up on Linux. That's not generally a problem because you're probably not running AAA games on Linux. I'm still using a 7870 and it runs great.
>>
>>54566878
What about it? It's the perfect AR for a high FOV
>>
>>54566428
Is it possible for someone to make a program that makes Nvidia GPUs compatible with freesync?
>>
>>54567071
The last game I remember that scaled with vertical was first Bioshock. In any modern game wider aspect ratios give you better FoV.
>>
>>54566864
Are you shitting me? My PG298Q is running at well over 144Hz with gsync.
>>
>>54566864
idiot shills
>>
>>54566927
>>54567196
>>54567219
You guys have no idea what you're talking about. Nvidia is cucking you. Google it.
>>
>>54567308
Man amd must be paying you a lot
>>
>>54567385
They don't really pay me that much but it buys lunch.
>>
>>54566776
i turned off v sync and it tore to shit fuck the extra frames its just ugly i couldnt handle how shit it was for the extra frames
>>
>>54567152
Technically? Yes. Practically? No. You'd need custom drivers and Nvidia hates open source software.
>>
>>54566927
OP here

but DOES IT LOOK GOOD is what i want to know i dgaf about drivers and stuff and AMD/linux/free ware bs

im talking the visual experience and enjoyment of what you see on the screen is it pleasing to the eyes is there a clear noticeable difference
>>
>>54567640
Unless you're a competitive gamer you won't be BLOWN AWAY by it, but once you get used to it there's no going back.
>>
>>54567709

this is much more useful if its a no going back thing thats v important
>>
>>54567722
A lot of subtle improvements you make count as "no going back".

Replace a wireless office mouse with a wired one with good sensor? A barely noticeable improvement at first, only when you try to go back to the old one will you notice how shit it was. You may find it unusable even.

Same thing with monitors, or anything really.
>>
>>54567818
yeah had a 1920X1080 monitor and was perfect happy with it until i saw my bros 2560X1440 so i literally went out that day and bought one wont ever go back im imaging thats what g sync will be like based off the stuff ive read nad peoples opinions like im content with what ive got but im missing out
>>
>>54567722
I have the PG279Q too and G-Sync is an absolutely fantastic feature. It hurts looking at my old screen now. As the other anon said - you might not notice from the start, but there's no going back.
>>
PG278Q, PG279Q or XB271HU?
>>
proprietary

no thanks
>>
>>54568011
PG278Q is TN,
PG279Q is plagued with issues,
XB271HU is plagued with issues, but seemingly less than asus.
>>
>>54568091
>he says as he sends a message onto a proprietary website
>>
>>54568106
proprietary website is much different than trying to force a proprietary piece of hardware
>>
>>54568103
So I suppose I will sacrifice IPS for a working panel.
>>
>>54568120
>b-but it's not proprietary when its muh 4chain :(((
>>
The problem with IPS is IPS glow, frosting and bleed. Getting a good one (with no dead pixels too) is a lottery. I have an HP LP2475w with 1 dead pixel. However I am stuck on what to replace it with since I love the wide gamma on it and 16:10 aspect ratio.
>>
>>54568091
You're retarded

lmfao they all SUCK :|
>>
>>54568286
Yeah.... Kind of makes me want to stop using IPS.

you SUCK
>>
I'll buy one when the price drops down. The price of these things is like $500 and upwards. only affordable ones are the 1920x1080 models, but these are all TN so fuck that.
>>
>>54568344
all of the IPS ones have horrible bleed.
>>
>>54568447
All IPS monitors have backlight bleed
>>
>>54568691
Which sucks pretty bad. Get a TN.
>>
>>54568166
I'd rather have the glow and bleed than inaccurate color and awful viewing angles.
>>
>>54568691
>>54568447
So IPS=worse?
>>
>>54569402
Depends on what you want.
>>
>>54569402
Well... here are your choices:

>better colors
>better viewing angles
but
>bleeding

or

>okay colors
>angles are shit
>bleeding isn't bad
>>
>>54569377
But you are going to be in front of the display for the most part. Also there are a few TN's with high color accuracy now. Benq make very good panels for color accuracy.
>>
>>54569444
I actually move around a lot, hence my desire for wider viewing angles. Good to hear TN is getting better on color accuracy, but I Doubt they can best even a mid range IPS at the moment.
>>
Fuck TN

>i watch at dark as my soul content all the time
>>
>>54569439
Is bleeding really that much of a problem?
>>
>>54569538
>Tn has better color reproduction than the IPS

HAHAHAHA

fuck IPS
>>
>>54569555
>Is bleeding really that much of a problem?

Yeah.
>>
Why does noone ever talk about VA?
>>
Literally the only choice right now for AMD fags is the ASUS MG279Q if you don't want to go TN or 1080. But the QC issues and price are really off putting. Then you get the G-Sync monitors and there is better choice and better QC. Why must AMD fags suffer so much?

>>54569662
VA was harder to make for gaymen I guess. Dunno.
>>
>>54569902
Oh and it only goes up to 90Hz (officially) with Freesync otherwise I might have taken a chance. I heard there is a hack to enable 144Hz Freesync but methinks there are other issues with that.

Fast Sync.

Hope you guys didn't pay money for G-Sync.
>>
>>54566776
how does this stuff apply to shit like CSGO? most people are running 150+ fps with 144hz monitors, so would there be any benefit to gsync/vsync or would it all be negative?

I personally use a 144hz monitor and never see screen tearing, whereas it was super obvious with 60hz.
>>
>>54569902
i got mine for $480 and i dont even have an AMD card.
i may pick up a 490 just to see what freesync is all about in games i cant hit 144+ fps in, but even without using freesync the monitor is great and im glad i got lucky with a perfect panel without having to replace it
>>
>>54567640
I've had the PG279Q for a few weeks now (January model) and I don't see myself going back. But I also had money to burn and play plenty of FPS.
>>
>>54566560
Its actually the opposite.
Amd drivers are amazing for linux. Nvidia is really shitty.
>>
>>54566864
amd retards i swear
>>
>>54565932
>Gsync
>Freesync
WHY THE FUCK CANT IT JUST BE UNIVERSAL?

ITS OCCULUS RIFT VS VIVE AND AMD3D VS NVIDIA 3D MAKE IT STOP AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
>>
Gsync is horseshit. They need to add freesync support, which is fucking free by the way, or make Gsync much cheaper.

I'm actually stuck with amd now because of freesync. That was what pushed me over the edge.
>>
>>54570087
Sli 980 Tis for 1080. Wew lad
>>
>>54573369
Freesync is just adaptive sync and is a universal open standard.

Nvidia just doesn't adopt it. Intel plans to though.
>>
>>54573423
>Inthell
