Okay, so I bought a GTX970 a year ago and then bought a 1440p display without realising the performance hit the card would take at that resolution. So should I upgrade to the 1080 when it comes out? Will it be worth it really?

Your games can theoretically run fine at that resolution if they are programmed and optimized correctly with new apis like vulkan / dx12

You'd still be fine with a 1070 at that resolution unless you play gaymes like crysis3, just cause 3, or shadow of mordor with the hd texture pack.

again, the engines for those games are too old to take advantage of faster gpu paths. They could all run really fast if they were re-written for vulkan.

1080 isnt the card to get its overpriced frankly and Better cards like the 1080ti and 490/590 will come soon
980ti is more than enough and are getting cheaper used now about 3/4-1/2 the price

Mad Max uses the same engine and DX11 and it gets 3x what Moredurr gets because its a unoptimized game

I'll just point out that I'm running at 1440p with a 4GiB 960 and I'm very happy with it. I can keep settings around high and still maintain very playable framerates.
In other words, whether your upgrade would be worth it depends a lot on how particular you are. If you need 60fps w/ max eye candy, then yes.

We're still waiting for the benchmarks. It's supposed to be faster than a 980Ti, but we don't really know.
OP here. Probably should have mentioned that I get an odd frustration from not being able to max out video settings (with AA as an exception)

A 1080 will be overkill for maxing out on settings, i would hit for the 1070. What processor do you plan in pairing with the 1070

Yeah but other cards are coming after the 1080ti. Better not get that. Better wait until the next generation comes out after that. But wait. There will be a new generation 9 months after that. Better wait for that one. Unless another generation is coming 9 months after that.
