I've been researching this too.
1. Get a better head unit.
2. Get an amp. Check watts required by speakers first, I recommend JBL for price vs performance.
3. A. (cheap) replace front OR back speakers.
3. B. (moderate) replace both front and back
3. C. (nigger bass) replace all speakers and get a dedicated subwoofer (this is for jerking off hands-free while driving using only sound waves).

Also, if you really want to do something remotely high end, don't blow your budget on ultra expensive speakers (JBL is usually good enough) but buy a DSP instead.
Active filter, parametric equalization to a target curve and time compensation are really game changers.
