PPI is not the only factor relevant to resolution, it also depends on magnification of the lens. Zooming in to a small, high PPI screen (or portion of one, in gear VR's case) means the effective resolution at your eye is lower.

Not him, but most of the porn being made for virtual reality right now happen to be 360° video. Most of the films are alright but without proper headtracking it's hard to get a grip on things. You're limited to two types of scenes: seated and standing; where the actor essentially embodies what would be your avatar whilst wearing something like pic related. Some companies have opted to doing "normal" porn surrounding a stationary 360° capture rig because the less head bobbing there is, the easier it'll be for the videos to be consumed. These are in much easier to watch and fap to as a result. John Carmack was actually pretty pissed at the sheer number of shitty 360° videos people were making for Gear VR last year because the content-creators didn't take into account the users' comfort.

Smart phone VR is the most likely candidate to achieve mainstream adoption first. PSVR will budge the number up by a fair amount as well.
Too bad vive is the only solution currently that does roomscale despite its flaws.
I reckon NLOS tracking system similar to the Stem controllers would've been heaps better than lighthouse since you don't have to worry about occlusion and can track your legs and arms for better inverse kinematics.
