CISCO runs proprietary firmware and software on their devices, which allows complete backdoor access to your network.

Logs are sent to CISCO without user input.

CISCO can remotely shut down your network hardware if they don't agree with what you're doing.

Assuming your service doesn't go beyond 40-45Mbps (OC pending) and 802.11G is fine, WRT's work great to this day, I buy them up at thrift stores, throw heatsinks on them, put DD-WRT on them, and sell them for quadruple what I paid for to people who need something better than the AIO shit ISP's give you

False. Yes, Cisco's IOS is closed source, but it does not have any known phone home functions or software backdoors. There are rumours floating around that Cisco devices are often intercepted by the NSA in transit and hardware-based backdoors are put in place, but that could happen with any platform, open or not.

Actually just got it last week for my first 5GHz router and it has been working great, except for the 2.4GHz band I don't know what's up with it, slows down to a dog worse than my previous $20 TP-Link router. Oh well though, I don't have any devices that don't already support 5GHz and if not they're connected via RJ45, so I might as well just disable 2.4GHz

I used to use an old Cisco 1042N but decided to get something new when I got a new place and a stand alone modem.

Every MIMO AC router uses beamforming, it's part of the standard, and
not nearly the miracle technology that Apple marketing makes it out to be.

At best you will improve signal by 1 bar in certain areas of the coverage, while reducing it significantly in others.

You can always achieve the same effect by aiming the antennas better, or moving the router.

it's actually occurring with most vendors due to the new FCC rule on firmware modification. TP-link is just the first to go public with plans for it.
>>
>>54554183
Except it will only affect USA models.
>bbut it;'ll affect all models not just US! why would anyone make a separate model just for us

To comply with your FCC bullshit - under your new rules, the firmware CANNOT violate FCCs wifi regulations. USA has a fairly unique channel set, so to comply TP-link will already have to provide separate firmware for USA to prevent you from setting your region to say Japan for instance and using ch14 which isn't allowed by the FCC.

>Moreoever TP-link isn't even encrypting this, they've appeared to have done bare minimum required, they just check the header of the new image, if it's not savvy it won't update - fooling that childsplay and apparently designed to be.

Looks too expensive if you don't need Gigabit port, you may as well buy Raspberry Pi 3 with that money.
If you need extra range, just buy a decent external wifi antenna.
But if money isn't an issue, I think it's a great router out of the box with ASUSwrt.

TP Link router is the worst.
>4 fucking MB flash
>2016
You can only get 8 MB model on 1043 ND.
On most model, you're limited to 4 MB flash memory.
It's enough if you only use stock firmware but who knows, maybe you want to use custom firmware one day ?
Goddammit, do they mass order 1 million 4 MB flash memory ?

>>54554718
Any router that's flashable with DD-WRT (Trunk) or OpenWRT.
Gargoyle has built in quota management, so you can limit per device to say, 30 GB / month and throttle the traffic afterwards for that device if that's what you're looking for.

>>54554848
Honestly, Xiaomi mini specs looks nice.
For $30, it has 802 11ac+bgn, 16 MB flash, 128 MB RAM, USB port and they're flashable with openwrt.

You do understand that every antenna is not to improve signal strength, but serves as a channel for increased bandwidth right?
The theoretical speeds of each antenna is 150 mbps, which could possibly increase with the next protocols of 802.11. so 5 antennas = 1.2 Gbps of theoretical down and up.

Just built mine. Search Newegg and eBay for embedded motherboards. Mine has some Intel quad-core and is totally fanless. Board was like $60, you can probably do even better than that if you search harder/don't need that much overkill.

Does anyone here have tried openwrt with extroot ?
Is it useful ?
After exroot, how do you upgrade the firmware from stable (Chaos Calmer) to next future stable version (Designated Driver) ?

The only reason I haven't tried exroot is this :
https://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/extroot#recommended_by_extroot_maintainer

"I recommend that you DO NOT try to do upgrades using opkg upgrade. You will likely end up with an inconsistent state and bricked router that way"

>>

As access points? Yes. As routers (that handle traffic primarily)? I only tested them briefly, they seem okay.

I know the options for DDNS, logging, etc. are limited compared to other routers. If you use routers like 90% of people do, then they seem fairly good. But I couldn't use a TP-Link as my primary myself because I like some advanced options.

The price was right on the TP-Link routers (they were free; no, I didn't steal them).

Most router usb ports actually perform no better than usb 2 speeds despite having 3.0 ports.

Hard drives and connected usb devices routinely disconnect without warning

Your router is going to drop your wifi devices as well

Netgear wndr3700v2, bought in 2010.

Apparently they're up to v5 now, sounds like crap hardware. I got lucky and all antennae and stuff still work (they're known for the 5ghz dying).

I followed a guide somewhere to roll the firmware back to one version prior to the latest they had in 2012, which fixed the issue of wifi devices disconnecting.

Now it has around 7 months of uptime and I've had no issues.

Would like to request help building a pfsense ubiquity setup with a microtik but first I gotta see if there's any idiots guides to easily setting up something like it first, before asking /g/
>>
>>54562081

What is 'bridge mode'? And why don't you just attach a layer 3 switch to the ISP router?
>>
>>54562099

Run a wire and use an access point.
>>
>>54562595
>What is 'bridge mode'?

What is "google"?

Bridge mode is the configuration that disables the NAT feature on the modem and allows a router to function as a DHCP server without an IP Address conflict.
The modem has to be bridged before connecting to a router since applications like VPN, P2P, and remote management require a public IP Address on the router WAN port for a successful connection.

Beamforming barely does anything.

Marketing people are idiots. You'll see stupid claims of 10 dB increase in signal.

The absolute max increase in signal strength from beam forming is 3 dB, because perfect constructive interference between two waves is double amplitude (i.e. power) and double power is 3 dB gain.

Double power may seem like a lot but it's not. Just like a 3 dB increase in sound isn't a lot, your wifi card isn't going to suddenly go from shit connection to amazing connection with that extra 3 dB.
>>
>>54562630

>applications like VPN, P2P, and remote management require a public IP Address on the router WAN port for a successful connection.

This is news to me. Somehow port-forwarding isn't an option here?

God-tier router
My entire setup costs $150 and is better than any $300 router with 500 antennas. I got a $50 Ubiquiti WAP that covers my entire home.
>>
>>54562689

I just realized this guy is behind double NAT.

My Layer 3 switch idea doesn't sound that dumb anymore, even a dumb switch would work - just set the 1st router as an IP helper et voila you're good to go.

I'm trying to put OpenWRT in a Netgear CG3100D.

You need to buy a new router, if you want OpenWRT, or wait until someone adds the support, I guess.

It sounds like you're running them stock, I have a C5 with DD-WRT, and it's probably the nicest and most feature-packed router I've ever used

The downside is that throwing DD-WRT on them makes them run hotter than stock, and they ship with nonexistent cooling, so you generally have to cannibalize an old heatsink for the CPU, RAM, and radios, but it ensures drops and slowdown never happen ever
