Starting an internship at Cisco soon. They're offering me a choice of laptop between pretty much any ThinkPad and a MacBook Pro (I think 15" and 17").

I prefer Linux (if I were to get the MacBook I would put Linux on it, I can't use OS X).

My question: assume that I'll use Vagrant/etc when I need to so it doesn't matter what most my team uses for development. Should I get a ThinkPad or a MacBook?

More specifically, I'm strongly against Lenovo because of Superfish and other shady stuff. I'm strongly against Apple because of the closedness of the system, including the hardware. Also I'm not a fan of the walled garden that locks you in and the marketplace controlled by a single company.

Which laptop is more ethical to get, under these assumptions? At least when Apple is evil, they're upfront about it, unlike Lenovo. But Lenovo has relatively more open hardware and doesn't try to control everything (for example, Apple tries to prevent you from dualbooting Linux easily).

was never used in another model and quickly removed from whence it came

they learned their lesson.

Then they added something else

LOL

I realize that, but part of me says "I don't know anything about this hardware. How would I know if it's just hidden better?"
>>
>>54540910
Just get the macbook. Thinkpad's ain't what they used to be. Also OS X is technically BSD, that being said, still dual boot Linux.
>>
>>54540910
If you can get Linux on the thinkpad, that may be desirable

But OS X is a fantastic IT environment, so if you just want to get up and running, choose that

You have no idea what you are talking about.
Get the P50.

What in my statement is FACTUALLY false?

I was doing GIS stuff at my internship last year, started with a Macbook because I figured I should learn OS X. After literally 2-3 full days of digging around with dylibs and missing headers and a shitty package manager, I gave up and asked for a ThinkPad instead. It's definitely possible I was "doing it wrong", but I just find Linux cleaner to work with.

Plus, I like my i3.

I mean, I can always connect it to some monitors. I think I'll just be doing graph theory stuff, so I don't really need a ton of power.

Thinkpad shilling brigade out in full force today.

No ethical person would ever buy Lenovo products again after Superfish.

Increasingly I'm unsure that there's any laptop (or larger-than-raspberry-pi hardware in general) manufacturer that I would be happy to give my money to.

Lelnovo are barely profitable. They bundle whatever software offer that comes accross their table because they offer high quality with razor thin margin so you get almost exactly what you get. They could charge more but there's a limit to what rational people will pay for a computer.

Applel on the other hand uses slave labor producing $300 trash and marking it up 5X, reaping mass profits off gullible idiots while paying $0.50 in manufacturing costs each device.

Lelnovo is where they are because they need to do it to stay in business. Apple does what they do because they are evil scum of this earth moral-less pieces of shit who deserve to be nuked off the face of the earth. Article related.

I agree that OS X's package managers aren't as good as Linux.

It's probably better for development where you rely on a language's package managers. You can still experience shitty things like wrong MySQL version calling the wrong dylibs, but it's minimal

Either way, there's going to be some initial setup quirks, but less so on Linux if you're comfortable with it
