Why is nVidia pushing clockspeed so much? Their IPC keeps decreasing by the gen and voltage proportionally grows clocks, not to mention higher clocks makes the chip less accurate.
>>
>>54531048
>less accurate.
what does this even mean? what is the result of an inaccurate chip on screen?
>>
>>54530924
That's almost 6700 more than a 1080
Nvidia btfo
>>
>>54531063
Too much innacuracies at the same time can mean a wrong pixel being drawn (with few accuracies). To the whole frame being fucked or breaking the rendering.

Lower IPC. Think Pentium 4/Bulldozer.
Average Memory Access time = Hit time + Miss Rate x Miss penalty

The other IPC.

I bet polaris 10 is going to go for $250.00 for 980ti performance, and polaris 11 will be $150 for 390x performance. RIP in piece Nvidia

oh ok, now it makes sense. so inaccurate chips do know that the data processed is inaccurate and by redoing it or something, lose IPC?

>>
>>54531215
No, Nvidia has been moving to a very high clock architecture while AMD has stayed floating around 1GHz since rv790.

Higher clocks give a shitload of disadvantages on silicon compared to an architecture with good IPC, the most important one is it hitting a thermal wall sooner, so futureproofing.
ICs being less accurate at too high clocks is more a physics issue than a architecture one, but architecture can compensate for it somewhat.

On a single 8 pin as well. I can't wait to see the board partner cards which are made for overclocking like the Gigabyte G1 or the EVGA FTW which will probably have a higher power requirement. I reckon these cards will have the potential to be pushed far.

The 1070 is taking way too long to come out. I need one asap after my 290 just isn't cutting it for me anymore.
>>
>>54531319
>290
so why not buy Polaris 10? it's gonna give you a way better price/performance ratio, and it will be a decent upgrade.

Then you can go for high-end expensive cards when Vega comes out
>>
>>54531137
ECC
>>
>>54531339
Because I haven't had the best of experiences with this 290, even though its a good card. I've never used nvidia before and these cards look killer. I've already set enough cash aside to buy a 1070 when the board partner ones come out and I wanna try out that g sync Asus monitor everyone keeps hyping up. I'm gonna go nvidia this time.
>>
>>54531414
>g sync
nice shilling
>>
>>54531414
but if you invest in a gsyn (meme) monitor, you'll be locked to nvidia. just buy a 4K korean monitor off of ebay (see teksyndicate, they have loads of reviews on those) and the monitor will have better panels and cost half the price

I know CCC (amd's software/driver) sucked, but they're using Crimson now, with a new team. give it a try. Plus, the 1070 will take a long while if you don't want the 100$+(extra) reference card

on stock cooler lol.

i hate nvidia with their shitworks and their shit tactics, but come on, thats fucking impressive.

overclocked its 50% faster than a 980ti in 3dmark, thats just retarded fast.

and imagine what custom coolers will do jesus
>>

>>54531460
That's the whole reason I'm getting the nvidia card is for g sync. I have a cousin who works in tech outlet and he told me the Asus gysnc monitor is the best monitor he's ever seen. I work now whilst studying anyway so I can afford all of this. If it gets to a point where I need to buy a new monitor for amd I won't mind I'm just desperate to try that monitor.

>>54531473
Gimped? My cousin I mentioned above has a 780 and I played witcher 3 on it a few weeks ago and it was at 60 fps. I don't see any gimping or bricking or whatever they say.

why not buy a 4K freesync instead? it supports more GPU's than nvidia's gsync meme
>>
>>54531645
Because I feel 4k will be too demanding on even the new gpu. 1440 is the sweet spot when looking at tech reviews and forums. I really want this monitor lol. It's like that feeling when you start making money and things you could never afford before but always wanted can be bought now so you have your heart set on buying those things. I've always wanted to try a 980 ti and a asus gysnc monitor but now I've been told the 1070 = 980 ti for abit cheaper that's why I'm getting that.
>>
>>54531778
well, there are also 1440p korean freesync monitors, but if you really want the expensive stuff, go ahead, and enjoy.
>>
>>54530473
Raw numbers are great but what does this translate to in real performance? I'm pushing a 1440p monitor off a single 980ti classy.

This reference model is hitting 2.1ghz on the stock cooler without melting? Only requires a single 8 pin right? If so I'll be selling my 980ti.

This exchange was way too civil. Good job /g/.

32" Samsung 1440p. 60hz refresh, 4ms delay.

So I have a two Xeon x5650's in my PC.

These are hex core CPUs running at 3.1ghz (turbo).

If I were to install a GTX 1080 in my PC would I be bottlenecking the GPU?

It seems to me that as games start to use more cores with I should expect to see good performance.

Yeah, pic related is captured from the reveal demo. Jayztwocents already has this card and doesn't seem to act like the figures are unreasonable, which would indicate that it's probably legit.

But for 1440p, it might make sense if you're running at over 60hz or want to run games at max settings and oversample too, or maybe future-proof for Crysis 4 if one comes out. 1440p60 I don't think there's anything you can't run with just one 980 Ti.
>>
Why are people shitting themselves of 2.1GHz? That's a 24% overclock, which is good but not absurd.

Especially when the card already has a higher TDP than it's predecessor.
>>
>>54532059
25% is pretty decent, especially when you consider that it's already almost 25% faster than the 980 Ti stock, while generating less heat.

Not a TV. Actual monitor. Got mine for $600 when they first came out.
>>
>>54532183
What are the speakers like? I have a samsung 1080p tv right now which I watch tv, play xbox and now I use as my monitor. 1080p is kinda limiting though and I've wanted to move up to 1440p buy I've never been able to find a 1440p tv. I guess I was looking for the wrong thing.

Does a 1080p picture (from tv or console) look shit on a 1440p screen because of the weird pixel mapping?
>>
>>54532336
Monitor has no speakers. Only a USB hub. If you're considering this monitor, jump on it before they disappear. Amazing monitor. I have my keyboard, mouse, wireless headset, and wireless Xbox 360 controller adapter plugged into the hub. They all work flawlessly. Less wires that have to run to the tower.
>>
>>54532336
Oh and about 1080p content on 1440p. No it doesn't look terrible. I watch Blu-ray rips all the time. And 1440p is the sweet spot IMO. Much more screen room both physical size and pixel count. And a single video card can still push AAA games at 60fos if you just turn down the anti aliasing a notch. I.e. from x8 to x4. The increased pixel count from 1080p to 1440p makes the AA difference negligible anyway.

Unless this monitor dies, or 4k is able to be driven by a single top tier GPU at 60+ fps, I'll be staying with 1440p.
>>
>>54532135
It's decent, but Nvidia and AMD don't gain the same performance from overclocking, for example, AMD needs way less to get an average 10% 3D performance increase due to higher IPC than Nvidia but has less headroom than Nvidia.
