Why did AMD stop updating the FX lineup with their new generations of cores?
From 2013-2016 they remained on 32nm Piledriver.
IPC gains were far too small, nobody would have bought them, they would have lost money.

This. As I've understood it the FX line never made enough money to sustain itself. Excavator wouldn't have changed that.

Couldn't make back the money they used up on Piledriver, so clearly another die shrink and refinement wasn't worth the poor slaes it would have made
Given how "far" Excavator has come from Piledriver, it was a good call

The FX chips are not their main thing, never was. It was always an enthusiast chip that offered 8 decent cores for cheap. They make money with APUs, we only talk about the FX at all because we like to game (enthusiasts).
As the earlier anon said there would be no money in updating the FX, they have been building up to Zen instead.
