They have to because windows is the most simple and world known OS people can use, if you give a standard citizen fedora 23 or centOS they will think the computer is broken.

Any GNU/Linux-libre system will be more than adequate for the uses the library allows, without trampling on its patron's freedoms

Tbh i would use GNU over windows because i like more freedom plus customization but alot of people don't really know what linux is and that theirs such a thing as a free OS
>>
>>54516252
If they won't know the difference, there's no real reason to use botnet OS's. Windows should not be the default.

Former librarian here. Our library switched from Wangblows to stripped down version of Ubuntu maybe 5 or 6 years ago. The same programs are installed, so functionality (Internet and catalog browsing) didn't change, people just complained less and machines worked better.

Debian 8 + cinnamon + systemd here.

>>54516074
it's probably easier to manage and deal with when they're ordering a bunch of bulk licenses for their back office hardware anyway, plus GNU/Linux won't run shit like office and nobody wants or cares about its benefits for this use case anyway

all the librarians i've talked to let me live boot linux and burn whatever isos i needed on their hardware

yep, you know there are these things called "laptops" that have existed for over 30 years now, if you're so worried about being "free", you're now able to bring your very own backdoored shitbox hardware wherever you go

Well OP, I'd love to hear your plan for tripling library budgets to be able to pay for more librarians experienced with Linux to help out the poor people who have never used a computer in their lives.
>>
>>54517544
>who have never used a computer before in their lives
Then the amount of help they'd need is no different depending on the OS the computer uses.
>>
>>54516074
You know what to do.

Nuke the bootloader and install some minimal Linux distro on them.

>that botches MS office formats
Let's completely ommit the fact that pre-OOXML ms office formats were oy-vey-shut-it-down tier proprietary and any attempt to recreate the functionality was to reverse engineer them.

AND EVEN THEN OOXML formats are fucking broken, post-OOXML ms office versions put SHITLOAD of undocumented non-XML streams that are NOT mentioned by the supposed "official documentation" despite the fact that OOXML's documentation is SIX FUCKING THOUSAND (6546 to be exact) pages long while ODF's documentation has 867 pages.

No wonder ODF was chosen as standard by the ISO.

Fuck off man.

Those computers probably are used a lot for Office. Unfortunately, Office doesn't really run on Linux, and most schools aren't too keen on purchasing a fleet of Macs.

why the fuck do LO shills always come up with this shitty irrelevant counterpoint like it somehow covers up for its shortcomings entirely and even makes it a better product? why do I as a user give a fuck whether or not some shitty "community" product can imitate my office suite properly? why is it my fault that the alternative is falling short? why am I still obligated to use the inferior alternative that can't even properly exchange documents with the most popular desktop productivity suite in the world?

if a car comes off the assembly line made of dollar store cardboard, it really doesn't matter if it's because satan himself created a deeply intertwined jewish conspiracy to prevent the manufacturer from acquiring the proper equipment to make it out of metal, it's still a piece of shit made out of cardboard that will still dissolve when it rains later that day no matter how well-meaning the manufacturer was in producing it
