Backlit displays have worse image characteristics than 20 year old CRTs. Backlit displays only came into existence because it was the only way to make displays slimmer. Backlit displays are incapable of producing proper blacks; so even an all black scene is producing large amounts of light. We can now make slim displays without resorting to the inferior method of using backlights.

whatever weird LCD Sharp made back then was impressive for an LCD, but was still worse than Sony's OLED at the time for color reproduction and brightness.

also what was the deal with SED/CRT and plasmas that always had a grey screen when turned off? Like the glass or something under it was never as black as a modern LCD that has been turned off.

LG's OLED has a red tinge when turned off, while Samsung's AMOLED has a bluish-green tinge when off.

You know I mentioned I bought a Motorola moto X pure to a buddy and the first thing he talked about was how my screen was inferior because it is IPS LCD not AMOLED.

Does LCD suffer from burn in? Honestly my screen looks amazing, bright, and I don't see the big deal of AMOLED.
>>
and seriously, the only people that call OLED a "meme" are the ones that got duped with early gen stuff (GS3 and before) which did have shitty colors and burn in with moderate usage, or they're kids that saw the Samsung phones in the retail stores that have burn in since they're literally on 24/7.

I'm not getting this. We can make OLED that emit white. Good.
But we use a color filter for colors? Isn't that basically what an LCD matrix does?
>>
>>54524082
Yes, LG's W-OLED specifically has an IPS panel fused as the front part of the W-OLED panel.

Each pixel is made up of 4 subpixel on the front IPS LCD (red/green/blue and a no color filter white subpixel) and behind that on each pixel is a single white OLED pixel.
So instead of having a static backlight or a zoned local dimming backlight, you have 1:1 mapping of a W-OLED as the backlight for every for ever LCD pixel (4subpixels), the backlight for every pixel can be completely turned off and adjusted to a range (10bit on LG panels!)

>but why? Surely that would be inferior to just using RGB OLEDs?
Slightly, yes - a brand new W-OLED panel won't have quite the range of a Brand New RGB OLED panel - both will knock the socks off any other LCD, PDP and CRT around though (for color accuracy and contrast anyway)

The real reason 'why' is becuase whilst RGB OLED looks nicer new, OLEDs degrade differently depending on the color, so 12 months after getting a shiny new RGB OLED panel, the colors won't be anything near the same, 2 years later and you'll have permanent burn-in on some colors.
This is fine for a Phone where the expected life is 2 years, but not for a Television where the expected life is 5-10 years (or more) RGB OLED simply can't cut it for consumer TV.
>>
Other than the resolution, is the Note 3's screen color really that much different from a Note 4's?

I have the Note 10.1 2014, the screen color even on the basic setting looked somewhat saturated so that blue looked almost like light cyan, so I'm wondering if the Note 3 has this same screen calibration too. Just want to buy something cheaper so if the Note 3's screen can be calibrated then I might as well buy that instead of the more expensive sequel.

Plz. I don't want a giant phone, and I can't live without active display anymore. Still running a 2013 X.

It seems like the perfect "smartphone" actually

It has a web browser, maps/gps, a mail client, SMS, and voice. That's all you really need. No games, no novelty apps. No garbage. But, it's completely open, not java, and not going anywhere fast, so if you have some super specific need it's trivial to create a hack that will work a year later.

The only con might be the lack of security updates, but anything kernel related is trivial to fix yourself
