Streaming to anything bigger than a smartphone iirc

You can stream to anything with Plex without paying. If you want to stream to a smart phone or similar device you need to pay for the app.
>>
>>54506278
>you can stream to anything without paying
>you have to pay to stream to some things
huh?

not him, and never used plex, but there's no such limitation in emby
>>
>>54506278
I can stream to my smartphone with the free plex app. I can't stream to my tablets nor my firetv stick via the Plex app
>>
>>54506305
If you want to stream from plex to your phone you have to pay
>>
>>54506278
Pretty sure they removed this limitation.

I watch on my PS4, my phone, tablet, ChromeCast, web browser, anything without having paid anything.
>>
>>54506318
i see

i personally stream from emby to kodi on my phone

I started using Subsonic since one week, you can stream free to everywhere and there are various Android clients for it: I personally recommend Ultrasonic.
It also has a premium version with additional features, but if you install it now you have until June 6th to try it without any restriction as the premium program will start that day.
Oh, it also is multi-user by default and has a podcast aggregator feature too.
So far it didn't give me too much hassle, except that some album covers are not displayed and I still need to find out why.
I stream from it on my phone/tablet, work computers, and Chromecast.
>>
>>54505892
Using emby is like having the server mine bitcoins on the CPU
>>
>>54505844
To all the people recommending Emby > Just no.

The free version of Emby is shit. Used it back in the day when you could get all the features for free, but now you need to pay for baisc functionalities. Just get Plex it's fucking 4.99 EUR per month you cheap fuck.

I only downloaded Plex the other day.

It fucks up all the seasons on my tv shows and anime, apparently choosing Home Movies is the way to stop that, but when I choose that it loads in nothing - what gives?
>>
>>54507941
You might need to follow this.
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/categories/200028098-Media-Preparation
>>
>>54507941
There are 2 reasons for your issues

1. Bad organization of your media library
2. You're trying to have the Plex server organize 300 shows at once. It won't manage it.

When I set up my plex server again I just threw in 260 anime shows, and it completely failed detection. Then I threw in 50 by 50 and let it sort it, and now it's working without issue.
>>
The fuck so you need to pay for? I use free plex to stream to two televisions at home plus a number of mobile devices inside and outside the home network.

You're doing it wrong.
>>
>>54508618
I never had that issue before. It handles all my 120 shows without a glitch and most of them are huge, like 26 seasons of Simpsons.
>>
>>54505844
Plex rocks.

Paid $75 once and best investment. 3 years in.
>>
>>54505844

>>
Op you didn't even say what you're trying to do. If you just want to play media in your home on your tv, use kodi.

If you want to play media while you're not at home, then plex.

I use plex when I travel, the only money I had to spend was $5 for the firetv app.
>>
>>54505844

AFAIK Plex is the best solution right now.

>use Emby since it was called MediaBrowser
>always been a piece of shit coded in Mono that pegged a core at 100% just trying to collect metadata for videos
>takes like an hour for half my collection to get sorted whereas Plex can do it in about 10 minutes
>transcoder doesn't know when to fucking rest, pegs core at 100% if transcoding audio only (throughout movie) or all cores at 100% when it has to transcode video
>Plex does it smart by transcoding whatever it needs to until it's built a buffer, then scales back and transcodes when that buffer is getting smaller
>Emby's mobile app is literally a wrapper around their web front-end
>>
>>54505892
>>54506093
Same paid features as plex.

>>54505844
Just use Plex. What features are paywalled that you need so much? Pretty much every aspect of it is free, the paid ones being pretty justified. Only thing I wish was free, was the offline sync.
>>
>>54509003
>defending scene naming
Wew lad.
>>
>>54505844

>"new plex system"

You still in a diaper kid? Even know what a bbs is?
>>
>>54508618
I've never had an issue with number of shows or movies. They do need to be named right though.
>>
>>54509105
i use emby primarily to keep track of what i've seen
>>
>>54509126
I too love appending a bunch of useless shit to my episodes and movies for no fucking reason. You know applications like TheRenamer exist for this reason? I can't even believe we have someone retarded enough to defend the literal autism and word vomit that is scene naming. The fuck is wrong with you?
>>
>>54509148
>therenamer
No because i use awk and sed.
I dont need a facncy menu to tell me its 720p.mkv
>>
I really dislike the online only features that Plex has. Emby is pretty good and allows me to rice it how I like. The only thing that I think they could improve on is having more reliable and less resource intensive transcoding
>>
>>54509177
>>54509148
Get filebot
>>
>>54509643
filebot is for anime. It has shit naming schemes
>>
Anything that has DLNA capability can play things from PLEX.

And you can just run an older version of the server and App from when it was free. There are APKs around of plex for android.

Like my TV has DLNA capability and I can play all my plex things directly on it.

Also, Plex sync is not worth paying for. I travel a lot so I thought it would be worth it, but plex sync is so bad. It never works.

If you want to stream to phones you need to have a premium version which is paid. That said Subsonic is fully open-source (or was, last I tried) and disabling the whole activation thing was a simple as commenting out 3-4 lines and changing return value, but you have to do that every version which isn't too great.

Another alternative is Ampache. It's not perfect, but it works. And it also lets you stream to plex/subsonic etc. clients.
>>
You can just use kodi as a front end for plex with this https://github.com/hippojay/plugin.video.plexbmc/releases
>>
>>54509978
You don't even need a plugin, kodi will see plex as a upnp device
>>
>>54509999
Really? But it doesn't work if you are streaming from outside the local network?

Plugin works with outside connection.
>>
How much has xmbc changed over the years since it was a rom for xbox?
I keep seeing it mentioned(kodi)but when i last used it years ago,it was shit bloated shit
>>
>>54510015
You'll need port forwarding for that. Emby allows you to set your server on any port though.
>>
>>54509131

I use my brain for that.

Kodi with plugins/addons

Just buy Plex. It pays for itself over time the sooner you purchase.

I bought lifetime subscription back when it was $74.99.

Spending earned money on luxuries directly affecting the consumption of media is a fine purchase if you are already consuming that media.

Making fun of me watching anything in the first place is more appropriate.

Anyway since the license costs less than 1 dollar a month, I think it's worth.

I've tried several of Plex's competitors but they often fail to find metadata for files that Plex has no trouble identifying and as far as I'm aware Plex is the only service with a plugin for DVD order for series like Firefly and Batman: TAS.

The only complaint I had was the Home Theater program on PC but Plex Media Player looks great.
>>
>>54512489
Why do you need meta data?
They are on your computer, its not like santa gave you 500gb of movies that you dont know what they are yet.

Click
movies
movie i want to watch
click
playing

Why do you need 234234234gb of "metadata"
To watch things you put on your computetr in the first place?

Somehow I find it much easier to remember what a movie I added to my server nine months ago is about when the title is accompanied with a poster, a summary, and a listing of the cast.

You're the people that enabled this shitty system of subs for minor services. Thius micro transaction bullshit thats taken over.

Kindly kill your self.If you want i can help you for a low sum of $50,000.Ill through in a free disposal service.
>>
>>54513929
Dafuq are you talking about, dude?
I know what I have downloaded and if I still have it is because I like it, otherwise in the trash it goes.
Yes I do pay for a service that I use and that allows me to access all my content from every device and everywhere I go because I don't have the time nor the knowledge to build one myself and I'm not ashamed of admitting it.
If everyone would be like you then people who can't build a house should be homeless?
I assume you don't pay for any service then? Good for you! If I have a broken pipe at home I'd like pay someone to fix it for me properly instead of doing a shitty job myself.
Don't be so butthurt, it's really not worth.

whatever emby does when it transcodes audio makes it sound like absolute garbage.
Like 96k mp3 tier.
Only reason I'm sticking with plex.
>>
>>54514448
quickly checking out the source, it looks like audio format and bitrate can be arbitrarily requested via emby's api, which means it's up to the client to request better audio settings
didn't see where the defaults (fallback if not requested) are located, though
