What's your GPU history like /g/?

I haven't been hardcore gaming on PC for long, hence the lack of GPUs on my list. Thinking about upgrading from my GTX 980 in the next couple of months and I am VERY tempted by the GTX 1080, but I'll try to wait and see what AMD can pull out of the hat. I am also looking for 10bit monitor support since I do a fair bit for paid photography as a hobby (usually about $1,500 every month or so)

2008 - ATI HD3850
2009 - 2013 College period with a laptop

I dont upgrade often. I got the 970 for 60 under list and sold my old card so the net cost for that upgrade was around 30 bucks.

I was hoping to sell my GTX 980 before the next gen GPUs come to market, but looks like I'll have to wait a little bit longer for the high-end Polaris GPUs to be released.

My very first GPU was a Voodoo Banshee that came bundled with a rail shooter and and Shogo: Mobile Armor Division. I played the shit out of that game.
My next GPUs were all Geforce cards until 2010 or 2011 when I switched to an ATI HD 6780. Then came a HD 7950 and an R9 390.

My next card will be either the biggest Polaris chip or I'll wait until the end of the year and get a Vega card.

why 750 ti?
370 might be better performance.
If you need low power get the 950 without any power connectors?

Though if you need to buy an 750 ti just the cheapest one will be fine, not much difference between them anyway, or if you it to be a bit quieter get one with 2 fans

One of my 7970's was bust cryptomining. After the GeForce 7950, I was in a valley of poorphage. My friend gave me the pair of 7950's after buying a pair of 770's. I sold the 7950's during the Bitcoin boom for 300% their worth because they were the most power efficient cards for bitcoin at the time. The 7970 was faster, but wasn't more efficient. So I barely had to pay more for the pair of 7970's new. Buttcoin difficulty creeped ,up, and now the 7950's are just regular graphics cards again. One had coil whine, so I was not even slightly against trading up. I was an idiot after learning about buttcoin, and busted one of the 7970's mining Litecoin.

Waiting for Vega. I didn't wait this long not to get HBM2. This is the longest I've waited to buy a new graphics card since I started buying them

Considered it (although I don't normally buy used tech, paranoid about static damage). R9 3x0 doesn't work under OS X. R9 2x0 kinda-almost-sorta-mostly works, but only with workarounds and patches and hacks, and framebuffer editing is needed for multi-monitor. Just forget it. 960 just needed me to install the driver and add a single boot flag.

That's what people used to say about cards with a bus width of 128 and 256 bit 10-15 years ago too. Back then cards had 32 to 256 MB RAM. Stop looking at the bus width and look at the actual performance. Running out of memory can ruin performance a lot more than a narrower bus.

2005?: 8800 something
2008?: some low end ati-card
2010?: 550ti
until this point i was fine with playing games on low-medium settings and i would only upgrade once games wouldnt run above 30fps anymore.
2014: 660ti
games became more and more boring and were only playable because of the nice graphics.
2015: 390
now i have a great computer, but not enough time to play all those new games...
i miss the old days

That I can remember:

Everything except for the 5770 was a hand-me-down from my Dad. Before 2008 I just used the family computer which had ridiculously old videocards.

It's amazing that I asked him the question but you chimed in and called him an idiot because in his opinion he said the 290 was his best card. You really need to check your priorities and emotional attachment to a pcb board. People are allowed to like and buy what ever they like. When you mature you will understand this concept better. Try to be a better person and embrace other people opinions anon. I wish you well.

PS: Look at my 7950's you butthurt faggot!

That chip is pretty annoying. It has this bug where it messes up large pictures, and it can ruin the EDID when you connect PC monitors using displayport. The EDID looks as if your monitor is a TV. Those issues have been worked around with software now, but seeing messed up pictures on websites was pretty annoying.

Never seen those issues with other intel graphics chips.

2011 - Shitty passively cooled ATI card because I didn't know anything better than "it has 1 GB!".
2012 - GTX 460 768Mb superclock edition. $100 on eBay and it worked pretty damn well. No housefires either.
Early 2014 - 750Ti. Wasn't too bad but I was a bit bitter when MFAA wasn't enabled even though this card was "Maxwell".
Late 2015 - R9 380 4GB. Runs pretty well and I want to try >muh dx12. I suspect it's actually heating my bedroom but it could just be the seasons.

Probably going to wait for the new AMD cards to come out and either grab a used card or wait until Polaris/Pascal is up on the used market.
