IDE or Vim/Emacs/ed?
>>
My "IDE" is GNU/Linux, a free and open source unix-like operating system running the free and open source GNU compiler collection
>>
>>54501219
IDE for C++ and C# (or LinqPad for small scripts).
vim or sublime text for scripting languages

My instance of vim is sufficiently modified such that it may be considered an IDE in its own right.

I get all that with emacs

and by the way, i think vim vs. emacs is a shitty argument that should've ended eons ago, they're not even comparable

emacs is more of a lisp machine than a text editor

You disgust me.

PhpStorm. I don't use vim/emacs/sublime, because I like to get stuff done and have a job instead of neckbearding and compiling kernels.

Code::Blocks is pretty nice senpai.

Any programmer using a proprietary editor is a joke and should quit his job right now. The fact the he's using one shows that he doesn't know what he's doing.

Can anyone tell me why vim is (comparably) slow on Mac OS X?

E.g. if I do a visual block selection, and an insert, and press ESC, in vim it takes ~3 seconds for the changes to appear.

If I do the same thing in Emacs with evil mode, it's instantly.

auto-indent + auto-brackets is GOAT
>>
>>54504527
autobracket is a pain in the ass when you still have to indent them (like when you declare a function)

If you can touch type: Vim or Emacs. If you can't Notepad++ for Windoze or MousePad or a derivative for "Linux".

Who /writesLispinVim/ here?

Maybe I'd consider Emacs if I owned at least three footpedals and it weren't written by a fat Communist turd.

It really bothers me that you have an indicator showing you the 80char width mark but then make the window 70chars wide so you have to break the line in two even when under the 80 char limit.

Notepad++

Excellent taste

Notepad 2 is the best scintilla based text editor
>>

That's just because I had the undo buffer open at the left. Normally they're all the same size.

I'd really like to use emacs or vim but everytime I try it, I find some basic thing that doesn't work, I google and you need some kind of plugin or script or whatever to make it work. Sure, if you're into that, but I want to fucking write.
Also I will eventually accidentally press something that will mess up my entire file and/or the editor itself like spawning some kind of documentation pane or my command history, without any possibility of leaving.

Fuck that, seriously.
