Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

T420 is the sweet spot.

>>
Just got the expresscard USB 3 thing for my X220. At first I thought it was shit cause it kept sliding out but you gotta push that shit in really friggen hard for it to stay in.
>>
>>54500255
Just set a limit for max battery capacity and don't let it die all the way. Keeping it between 80-20 maximizes battery life.
>>
>>54500227
I'm still in doubt myself. I like how the newer keyboard feels but I'm not very big fan of the the layout. But looking at performance the 430 is slightly faster than the 420 so I think I'll go for the 430. Is there any other reason to pick the 420 over the 430 other than the keyboard?
>>
>>54500255
Set battery thresholds to 40/80 (default answer, I do 30/85) with lenovo's power management software in Windows or TLP under Linux. That alone will help it last longer because you're not beating the hell out of the cells at the upper and lower ranges of their capacity.

Do a "full charge" on it only when you know you're going to be out and about for a while and really need it.
>>
>>54500313
No, the graphics on IvyBridge laptops are better, as well as the instructions per clock.

Got a pretty nice W520 coming from the US to the UK soon. What should I get as far as storage is concerned? So far I have in mind:

>256GB SSD - Linux + Windows
>1TB Travelstar
>16GB 1866MHz

>256GB MSATA SSD - Linux + Windows
>1TB Travelstar - Raid 0
>1TB Travelstar - Raid 0

With Raid 0, is it possible to be setup across both OS's (Linux and Windows) without using the hardware level raid which originally was an option?

Alright, thank. I think I've made my decision then. Now all I have to do is find one for a good price. I'm in the EU and found one T430, i7 3520M 2,90Ghz, 8GB, 1600x900 resolution for €519, is that a good price? It also comes with Win7 and a SSD but I'm going to install Linux anyway and I already have a SSD so I hope I can get a discount if he excludes those from the package.

Actually, guys, just found out I can't do this :(

I'm on windows 10 and Lenovo doesn't support it for the T420,

The people from Lenovo online seem to be saying that the hardware of the battery should gradually set a threshold automatically for battery longevity.

What can I do? Should it not make too much of a difference hopefully?

I just got an ssd and an ultrabay with it for my t520. I was going to leave the ssd in the ultrabay but since it contains the os, I'm worried it might get loose and mess up the system so I wanted to put it in the primary bay instead. When I opened it, I noticed the hdd in there had these rubber things on the side. Are these there to reduce the shock to the hdd and should I keep it there instead of the ssd? Also is the ultrabay getting loose a real concern or is it alright to just leave the ssd in there?
>>
How hot do your thinkpads get? My T430 goes 70c when playing l4d2 on minimum settings. And even if I don't play games, just having a chat and browser with a few tabs (chrome or other) makes it run pretty hot.

Currently at 60c with discord and two chrome tabs open.
>>
>>54502038
the rubber rails are to keep the drive snug in the drive bay, keep them with the caddy and whatever you stick in the drive bay

whatever drive is going to be your main drive you should stick in the drive bay and leave the other in the ultrabay, in case you actually need your CD reader or want to move your data drive to another computer or stick another hard drive in there or something it would be more convenient to just swap out the ultrabay hard drive since I'm pretty sure it is also hot swappable

Omg, you mother fucker, I hate where i'm at, I used to have verizon DSL 6.5mbps and was happy, now, but they discontinued it and now i've got TWC 50 and the latency is awful and theres buffering, I think they're violating net neutrality but no one cares.
>>
So /tpg/, my T400 seems to have developed a slight issue. Every time I turn it on, the computer gives me a "fan error", beeps twice and then shuts off. I've managed to bypass the error screen by just hitting esc on startup, and the computer still seems to work fine under Ubuntu 14.04, but it gets ridiculously hot just a few minutes after starting anything processor-intensive.

Is this a common problem, and is there an easy fix? Or am I going to have to replace the entire fan assembly, thermal paste and all?
>>
>>54502163

How much classic? I'm thinking X301 for really classic and light, but it is only as "fast" as a T61. If you can live with the double height Delete, then X220.
The X301 also has a bigger resolution (1440x900 against 1366x768 in the X220), but it supports less RAM (8GB instead of 16GB) and obviously the X220 is faster.

Absolutely cannot upgrade wireless ac 7260 driver 64bit from 18.33.2.2 to 18.40.anything.

Installs of the newer driver always succeed but fail to actually update the driver version.

Tried total uninstalls, 7/8.1/10 compatible versions, 18.40.0.0 instead of 18.40.0.2, direct from intel, via intel driver update, via lenovo system update.

My current driver will intermittently fail so hard it fucks up the whole device manager and I have to fail a restart into a bsod in order to return to operation.

What am i doing wrong?

what kinda difference is the x220t i5 against the x200t's c2d?

wavs are disgustingly big. I have a few files in mp3/320, flac and wav and the wav files as so much larger than either of the others. Unless you had infinite storage or were using it for archival i really would never use flac.
>>
>>54507915
expect around a 2x performance increase going with the x220t vs an x200t. If you really want the aspect ratio that comes with the x200t try and find an x201t, at least they will have 1st get core i5s or i7s
>>
>>54507950
I have the storage so I get my music flac if possible, it's not really noticeable but just the archival aspect sounds very appealing to me. It's like collecting CDs or Vinyl, more than an obsession than anything else

Thinking of getting either a t520/30 or w520/30

Is there a significant difference in performance between a NVS and a Quadro? I need it for CADshit and some light gaming (CS:GO is it really, 60fps would be nice, dont care about what settings)

Substantial enough to be worth bothering with yes
But in the end, the weight addition is still minor. If you were that flimsy, you'd just get an ultrashit anyway. Also, you get a quad core with the W
Your battery life will be shorter but on battery if you crank up the Optimus and throttling, it should still work out

Somewhat slippery as one would expect. The accuracy around the edges issue means you can't drawfag as well as say an X61t
I could never draw well though

wait so, you'd say the x61t's a better alternative for drawfag?
why?
would krita/photoshop cc run alright on it?
>>
>>54509143
Okay, it seems like USB 3.0 isn't supported for booting, my USB 2.0 worked just fine.
>>
>>54509475
Ps will rape the X61t, but Krita should be alright since Sai runs fine - you may have colour accuracy issues on the XGA ones since the overlay and backlight yellow with age. As much as I did say the X61t does a better job for drawfagging, I will concede that it's really getting to that point of hard to use. It's nearly 10 years old! Alternatively, the X201t may also be more ideal
But yeah, the X220t's (and by extension X230t's) digitiser has this issue where the pen cursor goes spastic around the edges of the screen, especially the bottom edge. That and the aspect ratio isn't drawfag friendly I find

Yes.
You can even charge the new thinkpads with the rectangular plug with the old chargers, if you get an adapter. Currently having my X1 on some old 90W charger, that came with my X61, because one of the previous owners probably switched power bricks for whatever reason.

>>54510107
Just take the heatsink off and pop an i7-2720qm in. Should wirk just fine. However the t420 was never meant to handle the TDP of the i7 so it will run pretty hot and will likely even thermal throttle itself to avoid doing damage.

using soft rim right now. If it wasn't for the fact that classic dome wears out so fast and its hard to find bulk replacements i would be using it instead. Soft rim could do with more grip though, thinking of gluing some sand or something into it.
>>
>>54510796
X220 has 1366x768 TN which is meh, but with the IPS upgrade will have better colors and viewing angle.

T420 also has a regular 1366x768 but also has the optional 1600x900 screen. But it's neither are IPS.

Finally you can mod the t420 with other screens if you're a DIY sort.

And those fuckers are a bitch to properly cut to size.
>>
>>54511189
where did you get them from?
>>
>>54511152
Havent dropped it from my desk yet, and I also havent flooded it yet, but so far, the built quality (as in how big are the openings between two pieces of plastic, how much this-is-all-one-solid-piece it feels and how much flex there is) seems mostly even better than on my X200! Compared to my X61 or some even older models, I am not so sure…
And the new hinges, while still miles better than anything in best buy, are much more wobbly than the old hinges.
And of course the missing clamshell…
Who thought that was a good idea?
I am always getting dirt and dust into the machine when transporting it, and without any hooks, the lid isnt staying as closed as I would want it to.
But all in all, its quite OK.
But as soon as those crazy chinks manage to bring out something affordable and dependable, I am going to reactivate my X61. 14" is way to big to lug around daily.
