2-in-1 laptops. Are they actually useful or are they trash? Thinking about getting a Lenovo 900 or MS surface. Intended use would be web browsing/ebook reading and movie watching in tablet mode, and word processing and some programming in laptop mode. Am I better off with two computers? I don't want a desktop I like taking my laptop to coffees shops are parks with wifi
>>

Get a detatchable.

They're no more trash than are normal laptops. That said, the answer to your question is yes, they are trash. Planned obsolescence, shitty ergonomics, defects, gimped CPUs and GPUs...

I'd never pay more than $200 for a laptop as things stand today.
>>
Wait for gold nanowire lithium ion batteries to be a thing before you get a mobile computer.
>>
The SP3 and SP4 are too big and heavy to hold while watching movies. I just have them stand on the bed or a table while watching.

As for programming, do you use VMs? You might want to get something that has at least 8GB.

Has Lenovo actually stopped putting botnet in their laptops?
>>
>>54485591

I have one its pretty useless as a tablet honestly but as a regular laptop its pretty nice I mostly forget I can use it as a tablet
>>
Yeah tablets that weigh more than the ipad mini (approx 340g) are really shitty tablets.
>>
>>54485591
I use a X201 tablet with a 9-cell and slice battery because I'm not a skeltal manlet

I think the Surfacebook has a pretty lightweight tablet portion though
>>
>>54486482
Where's the laptop in that picture?
>>
>>54486556
No laptop, for my example to have a laptop you need to hook it up to a monitor

And I guess you may work out something with a keyboard by placing it on your lap and then the laptop on your books to simulate the picture I drew

I'm lost. How is this relevant to OP?

It isn't, just relevant to the image you posted

I happen to love them...at least the Android two in ones...fuck windows...

This. Use a mobile OS on a mobile device.
Hybrid devices are pretty shit in general, although the ThinkPad Helix was the shit.

thoughts on the Cube i7? it's rather cheap at $300 for a Wacom slate
>>54486503
tried it out before, it's not that heavy but the size makes it very awkward to maneuver
>>
I have a Yoga 900.

Battery life is quite good, easily lasts 8-10 hours. Screen is nice. I don't use the tablet mode often, but it's there if I'm interested - maybe a couple of times here and there.

It's funny to flip it right before landing on a plane and the attendants kick and scream at everyone to put their macbooks away, but I can just continue with what I was doing.
>>
>>54487925
You can get it with Ubuntu preinstalled. I like it.

As a creative device? 16:9 makes it shit.

As with all devices, do your research, build up your own opinion, make your own decisions. Nobody else can do that for you (unless you're a fanboy)

I was thinking of selling my $2000 gaming peecee which I don't even use for games and getting one, what's the comfiest one to use while in bed?
>>
>>54488268
>comfiest to use in bed
A real tablet. iPad Mini, Nexus 7, or Nook HD 7 would be my recommendations for comfy. Any tablet beyond about 350 grams weight is shit for comfort.
>>
>>54485591
When made properly they're great machines

eh I used to have this bulky af laptop that used in bed all the time and it was fine for comfy

>>
>>54488322
I used to use a regular laptop in bed until I got a 7 inch Android thing. There is no comparison and I will never go back. The laptop just feels unnatural now while the little tablet feels perfect. Like a paperback book.
>>
They're good in theory, but in practice, fashion and planned obsolescence normally take precedence over a useful computing machine ala macbook

Good luck finding one with good build quality that isn't consumer grade "lol 2 USB ports" trash. Even lelnovo 2 in 1s have hinge failure problems.

aren't most Wacom Cintiqs in that aspect ratio though? I've never been too picky about ratios since all it takes is a week to adjust.
Agree 100% on that last paragraph though, biggest problem is that I can't find it in retail to try it out in person (I can probably find a similarly sized slate to try out the size, with pen on the other hand I'd have to go with what others say)
>>
>>54485591
If they don't have digitizer pen support, then they are. I never found the tablet mode useful for anything other than taking notes
>>
if you're doing programming you'd best get a regular laptop, i have a surface pro 3 and you can't code on it, at least with visual studio 15. not sure about the newer surface pro though
>>
>>54485591
If you want a 2 in 1 computer you can actually use effectively, be prepared to spend a lot off money.

The yoga 900 is one of the best if youre going that route.

Dont cheep out, or you may end up with a useless paperweighy.
If you want a price effective computer get a stationary.
>>
these machines will be good when the 2GB ram / 32 GB EMMC meme ends
>>
>>54489810
What do you mean ? I was about to buy a surface pro for programming in laptop mode and movie watching/browsing in tablet mode. Is the screen too small for actual work ?
>>
>>54489810
Nah SP3 is fine. Better with the SP4's cover.
My problem with mine is the 4GB RAM.
>>
>>54491940
some of them have like i7 + 16feltmemeram.

>>54491631
pick the one with good battery life.>>54489635
or like this anon says, but there's isn't much digitizer convertible only available on Thinkpad yoga 12.5/newest one yoga 260.
>>
>>54492023
and are huge as fuck

I love my surface pro 3 but I wish I had something smaller with a full keyboard
>>
>>54485591
Are there any with AMD CPU?

sending that back (above) - mi pad 2, I post in /csg/, the tablet itself is riddled with problems as shown in the video I made.
I'm actually waiting on that Cube i7 stylus.
Looks great for the price and blows the mi pad 2 out of the water spec wise apart from the lower rez screen and smaller battery.
but the core-m is worth having
>>
>>54492331
You were looking to get the Chuwi Hi12 as well right? Why did you opt for the Cube i7 Stylus instead?
>>
>>54492443
It was a tight call but some really small things pushed it over the edge.
the core-m cpu, a proper SSD inside and Not these EMMCs, so I can't put in a bigger ssd at some point.
faster write/read speeds on the ssd compared to the EMMC's etc
better temps with the core m cpu than the Atom X5 Z8300 that's in the Chuwi, which was I was worried with because the Atom X5 Z8300’s don't inheritly support over 2-3gb of ram (can't remember the specifics off top of my head) also the ram is single channel on the hi12 (probably due to the Atom X5 Z8300’s ram limitations and that's how they've got around the problem by making it single channel)

also the with the smaller battery life in the i7 stylus the battery tests come out roughly the same due to the power efficient cpu.

also wacom support, which is always nice and separate charging which is a properiatry charger(?) So I've heard charges faster than the micoUSB on the hi12.

so they're some of the reasons. I've got more but cba typing further hah

if you want to sub my channel and when I do get the tablet I'll compare it to others around the same price point for you.
>>
>>54491940
I'm in agreance.

2gb on windows 10 is not enough.
>>
>>54488630
I was thinking about getting the xps 15 but it's so expensive. apple prices...
for a dell machine...
>>
>>54488871
Do Sony still make VAIO? I used to have one, amazing quality and stylish too. Only problem was it came with Vista, ha.

I like the VIAO logo, it's basically analogue and digital if you look at the dots and lines etc
>>
I was a bit hesitant at first with windows 10 on a touchscreen having not used it on a tablet but it's not actually that bad compared to android.

could do with more android / win10 cross over apps though.

how to to get chromecast app working on win 10?
>>
>>54486579
My tablet is portable. Take it anywhere. Then dock it back at home and cast to the secondary big screen, pretty neat.
>>
>>54485591
2-in-1 laptops are trash. Really. I'm working here as a Win8/10 metro app developer. Get a x220 ora t420 and a 6 inch android.
>>
>>54487925
bump
>>
>>54492787
and many of the ones you find in shops come with windows 8 and even though you can upgrade you actually can't because there won't be enough space on the internal memory to do it
>>
>>54492820
No, Vaio is its own company now
>>
Surface Pro 4 vs XPS13 ? I have a discount that brings the SP4 at the same price (without the keyboard)
I can't decide. I could even get a 900€ zenbook and a tablet, but syncing sucks, especially if it's an ipad
>>
>>54496422
>tablet vs laptop
Laptop
>>
>>54496451
The SP4 has the same specs (i5, 256gb SSD), same OS. The screen is smaller but better resolution. However, lower battery life and 150$ more for the keyboard
>>
>>54496548
Like I said, go for the laptop.
