I kind of miss having a "32-bit shell on a 16-bit DOS OS". Whenever Windows had a problem, you could fall back on DOS. Why didn't they keep making Windows like that?
>>
>>54489605
Because DOS was typically the part that made it have a problem in the first place.
>>
>>54489636
How so?
>>
>>54489697
Google 640kb
>>
>>54489697
It was a 16-bit kludge ill fit even for a unitasking AT-class system let alone as a foundation for a modern 32-bit multitasking operating system like Windows. Its incredibly laissez-faire way of handling resources meant that the entire system was at the whim of whatever cheap amateur piece of shit software you were running on it, the shitty memes mactards and freetards fling at Windows were very valid once.

Or, if you're just talking about the general idea of a "command line only" mode, Windows and DOS never had much in the way of useful non system administration-related text mode software like varying Unices and their clones did.
>>
>>54489762
Well before NT came out, Windows came preloaded with the whole DOS suite. It wasn't a lot, but at least you could always boot your computer and play around with your files even if Windows was completely fucked up.
>>
>>54489814
It was the other way around. DOS was the operating system, Windows was just the shell. It remained this way until XP finally unified the 32-bit NT and 16-bit product lines.

The command-line model is definitely useful for recovery jobs like that, that's why it's been included with most NT install disks (though I don't know if modern Windows installers still have it as an option)

No, there were 32 bit Windows drivers, Windows provided its own libraries, access to the disk, etc, when loaded.

It is safer to say it 'relied on DOS' but this was only strictly true because you had to load DOS to load Windows, once the 32-bit Windows were loaded they were their own OS for all practical purposes.

>>54489912
>there were 32 bit Windows drivers, Windows provided its own libraries, access to the disk, etc, when loaded.
But this was a pretty common thing with DOS software in general, not just Windows, I don't think I would say dedicated libraries and unique device support are really what qualifies an OS, in the end it still had to go through that crusty DOS base, and in the case of pre-9x especially it was very much a 16-bit system.

Later versions of Windows you could probably make that argument better, they of course used DOS as a base but it didn't feel as apparent, and DOS 7 was not sold as a standalone product.
>>
>>54489984
Thanks, didn't know about those browsers.

Anyway, while Windows 95 and newer ('till XP) had to be loaded from DOS, once loaded they were fully 32-bit OS's (except when running a DOS session or 16-bit Windows app), in my opinion it's little different than launching BeOS from Windows back in the day. We'll have to agree to disagree on this point.

>LowEndMac.fuckup

All the claims of the PowerPC Performa line being shit are thanks to a cluster fuck of an article at Low End Mac. They were fine Macs in terms of hardware, but Apple had other issues (Copland failure; shit marketing; confusing as fuck model lineup; Win95 wasn't total shit like Win3.1).

PowerPC 603 was 32-bit with a 64-bit FSB (in modern terminology). The Performas had 64-bit L2 caches and ROMs. What we now call the northbridge was 32-bit, but that didn't impact performance by much. (It absolutely wrecked performance on the couple of 603 PowerBooks with no L2 caches.)

The northbridge / southbridge used 680x0 bus protocols but that didn't affect performance at all. The northbridge just converted on the fly.

>>54488350
>Mac didn't get 64-bit CPUs until the PPC G5 in 2003.

Yep. The G5 was the only 64-bit PPC Apple ever used.

>>54489146
>I always figured the 603+ was 64-bit, but I guess only certain models for RS/6000s were.

There were no 64-bit 603's. The 620 was the first 64-bit PPC, but no one used it because the 32-bit 604e kicked its ass.

>>
>>54492517
>32meg was the top tier in '96. 16meg was the norm.

16MB was the norm. But the Power Macs could hold more. In some cases a lot more. The 6100 could hold 520MB (512MB + the 8MB soldered to the board). Even the Performas could hold 64MB.

I had 16MB to start. I'm trying to remember when I upgraded to 48MB, but it was by 1997 at the latest. It wouldn't shock me at all to know that there were Power Mac graphic designers with 128 or 256.

Here's a real bonus; all M$ software of the era that used number keys.
111-111111
or
1112-111111
Works for everything.

Plus software 'upgrade' from M$ can be pointed back to its own install disk to authorize an installation of a server/windows product.

My first new computer was a 12MHz 286. I put 1MB RAM in it but I remember the extra 384K was $1000 for 100ns (0 wait state). Whole 286 was about $5000 so you got a hell of a deal in comparison.

Laptops of the day were B&W, for a shitty passive color display add $1000, for a '
good' TN display another $1000. Made laptops like $5500 or more.
Even had a buddy with an old AC portable before laptops.

I cant remember what mine was other than it was a osram case i think and had a 386 with alot of ram at the time 1992 i think

no soundcard, loved he sound from the pc speak actually its still ingrained in my brain even though i havent heard in over 15 years

15" SVGA monitor (i know fancyyyy) and a trident/hercules vga card

dunno why dad didnt get a modem or soundcard back then, used it all the way up till 1998 and we got a new PC

Had a BIG 5" floppy and a smaller one, thats about all i remember
