What's wrong with Linux mint?
>>
Unprofessional maintainers that do shit that in good-distro terms is called a "frankendebian"
>>
>>54480029
https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian#Don.27t_make_a_FrankenDebian

Note that Mint's solution to being a frankendebian is to just force you to reinstall from scratch after every major release
>>
>>54480029
Nothing, it just werks.
>>
>>54480043
>>54480082
So what distro do you recommend for someone that will use it for work (i.e. Not arch or Gentoo)
>>
>>54480206
Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Fedora.

One of those.
>>
>>54480206
Ubuntu GNOME, then install Cinnamon on it.
>>
>>54480029
There is nothing wrong with mint.
/g/ is just autistic and hates anything that isn't at least as difficult to install as debian.
>>
>>54480029

comes with over 3000 packages
>>
Users of 17.3 will be forced to upgrade in 2019.

Piece of shit preinstalled software
Yahoo search in browser, cant easily add google
Themes look like ass
Their own customized applications are shit
>>
>>54480220
>>54480239
Thanks, I've been thinking about openSUSE for a while.

What is vanilla Debian like? I don't know many people who use it for desktops, and the ones I do know who use it use stretch. Any good for a standard desktop? I trust /g/'s (non-meme) answers more than most tech communities.

Everything

1. Based on Ubuntu which is based on Debian
2. Can't keep up with security updates
3. Security updates aren't even installed by default because the dumbass dev thinks that it would be too 'unstable'
4. It's literally Ubuntu with some codecs pre-installed, there is 0 reason for it to exist.
>>
>>54480256
this is now a /sqt/ thread.
Is there a dpkg or apt command to determine number of packages installed?
>>
>>54480316

dpkg -l | wc -l
>>
>>54480301
It's just like every other distro, but with older packages
Also wireless support is shit, and you have to manually install gpu drivers
>>
>>54480322
Thanks for the mustard gas
>>
>>54480341

it actually removes all packages without asking.

dpkg -l = delete all packages installed
wc -l = (w)ithout (c)onfirmation
>>
>>54480206
debian or fedora.

i don't see any point in using ubuntu. to me, ubuntu is just debian with a shitty DE attached.
>>
>>54480322
don't do this guys it installs gentoo
>>
>>54480404
ubuntu netinstall
>>
>>54480327
how is wireless support shit?
also you have to install gpu drivers manually in most distros if you actually want the newest, latest performiest shit. which is what you mean, i assume, because the generic driver work out of the box just like in any other distro.
>>
>>54480305
>>
>>54480413
... at which point there is factually no more difference whatsoever then?
>>
>>54480470
>>54480484

>how is wireless support shit?
Missing blobs for most cards
>also you have to install gpu drivers manually in most distros
Sure, but you can use a deb package in *buntu, while you have to install the drivers completely yourself in debian
>>
>>54480477

that literally proves nothing
>>
>>54480322
2357 is a lot, I guess.

bruh...

But >>54480305 this does?
>>
>>54480497
interesting. i have never had a problem with any of my machines with wireless. neither with debian nor any other distro. same for gpu, but in all fairness i have never installed proprioetary drivers since i don't really need much gpu performance.
>>
>>54480561
werks on my mintchine.

oh you mean kernels aren't included in updates, and must be updated using a separate panel?
There isn't really a need to upgrade a kernel if all your hardware works, and there's no security fixes, tho, right?
A interface that let's you know if new kernels include fixes would be good, tho, right? Better than just updating every new kernel release blindly anyways.
>>
>>54480372
umm isn't it just piping
output of dpkg which lists all packages goes as the input of wc which counts the lines
>>
>>54480372
yeah the -l flag actually stands for (l)et's eradicate all jews
>>
It's working.

Now it's not.

When did this Debian is hard meme start? Debian is very easy and any retard can figure it out.

the install? sure

actually using it as your only OS? that's when normies fail

Yes.

Never once happened to me. What did you do?
>>
>>54481352
Why do you assume it was me that did something wrong? I tried to install Debian testing alpha 5 and it shit itself.

Found the problem, I always use stable.

I manually switched to wired connection and turned of wireless, and wireless quit working.
> mint comes with 3000+ packages.
after asking how i posted 2357 total packages(4 month old install I've added a bunch of programs and their dependencies to)
>no updates. no security updates.
see jpg & jiff.

tl;dr every anti mint post in this thread so far is bullshit.

What else would it do? What's the point in posting that?
I don't understand.

Not my favorite distro, but it works pretty good.

Why are security updates such a big deal, really? Shouldn't software be secure by now?

The only point for using it is for the Cinnamon DE. Xubuntu, Kubuntu and Ubuntu MATE performs the same function with less problems.

I have used both for quite some time and prefer mate on mint because it's lighter and it has more options for settings at least when I was using it.
