How did you enjoy building in phanteks case ?
>>
>>54479433
Felt amazing. This case is pure magic from how much it allows someone to build in. I took advantage of the cable management in this case had and putting everything in was a breeze.
My tech/gamer friends that helped me put it together were actually astonished at how much the case offers and how sharp it looks for the cheap price it is.

Have you tried running it delided and undervolted? At 4Ghz, depending on your luck, you could run it sub 1V, and it'd be faster than a 4460. Still would need a fan to push all that heat out of the case somehow.

Can someone tell me why the motherboard heatsink directly under my CPU reaches 250 fahrenheit (or higher, I don't know, even Asus's own temperature monitoring program doesn't now). All I know is that it gave my finger a 2nd degree burn after touching it for 2 seconds

How can I fix this? Buying a new motherboard that costs more than 100 bucks? Or maybe I should buy a CPU cooler that also blows air on motherboard heatsinks?

All tips are welcome
>>
>>54483908
Probably just a lack of airflow. Mobo makers were slow to realize that they can't assume a blowdown cooler anymore. Zip-tie a 40mm fan to it, or measure the retaining pins and see if one of the many tweak shops has a chipset heatsink with a fan that you can replace it with.

>>
>>54489982
I like it, but I think it's over engineered. Front fan goes way down below its rated spec on DC control (mine has like 250-1200 rpm range), but others have found it to be noisy. I like its sound profile. Running it past like 500 makes it audible, past 700 noticeable, past 900 loud. The sound it produces is a low pitch whoosh. Just air moving, no screechy bearing noise. Moves a fucton of air. Removing it might be a problem. To get access to it you need to remove the front panel, and its held in place by either 4 or 6 tiny ass screws in awkward positions. Case works well with passive/semi-passive PSUs, ss there's a went on top. Straight front to back airflow, my case temps are barely a degree or two over room temps. Everything is held together by screws. Building in it takes some planning due to limited room.

I quite like it, but its not for everyone.

Ah well, some PSU/card combinations just don't work out. You could use an old mechanics trick - put a lenght of pipe to your ear and hovering it over the card find the noisy component, the drown the fucker in epoxy. High chance of fucking with the components thermals and killing the card though.

That would work a billion years ago when the chokes were not all sealed. You could use hot snot, I did it on an old Rage Fury card. Anymore they are all sealed up.

Tired like 3 different power supplies as well, all of em whine. Shit is very pronounced though so I dont think its a combo problem but just a bad choke.

Like I said though, 1080 will save me and the poor slob that buys the 290x off me won't be able to hear it over the stock cooler anyways

Stupid question
How bad is it for temperatures if I let my rig open
>>
>>54493294
depends entirely on your ambient temperatures.

If you happen to have ambient temps under 20c, it'll probably run decently cool, even with the side panels off.

If however you are in the middle of the desert or some shit, and ambient temps are 40c+. Your rig will run hot as hell.

ooooh, it is very pretty. I could never go full size ATX though, empty slots sadden me :( Even with my PCIe SSD it would look too sparse. recommend any good M-ATX boards with a proper chipset and enough CPU/PCH lanes to accom my 390 and Kingston Predator SSD ?
>>
>>54493663
i must add though, this motherboard while being a "business" chipset, handles the stuff i want to do extremely well. and has ASUS' shiny yoofy bios to play with :)
>>
>>54493663
I'm on 128KB/s internet for the next two days so I can't help you there.

I mainly stick with MSI, Asrock, Asus, or gigabyte.

For what you're doing though you don't need anything too fancy, so most of those companies should have at least 1 or 2 motherboards suitable for your needs.

Any chipset should be able to handle your 390 + an SSD without getting bogged down.
>>
>>54493731
cool thanks, out of interest what was the main "what the fuck" in your mind about this particular motherboard paired with this CPU ? I knew it wasn't ideal but i feel you see a problem i missed :)
>>
At first glance just the fact it's mATX with all the DIMMs full and PCI slots used.

then glancing at the Speccy told me it was a low end business chipset. Which had me glance at the CPU and when i saw the S moniker I figured you got it for free, or were a retard. Glad to know it was the former.
>>
>>54493826
haha fair enough, i'm glad you appreciate my use of an S variant CPU. I've had many people try to shit on me for using it as if they would honestly turn down a free i7 just because it isn't a k-series.
>>
>>54493845
Nothing wrong with the S variants besides the gimped performance compared to the full SKU. But the 4790S is a perfectly capable CPU in it's own right, just not when compared directly to it's K series brother.
>>
>>54493871
exactly, i bet there are more people running un-overclocked k-series chips than there are people running slightly nerfed variants to their full potential lol

in 90% of games no, in a few rare exceptions maybe.

Very CPU intensive games could bottleneck you, but that 970 is still going to be your bottleneck in most games.

>>54494057
Oh for sure that was part of it. I do some encoding for my own personal use and the 7850k simply was unusable for that purpose unless I wanted to wait literally days. This 5820k however does in hours what my 7850k would take 2 days on.

real cores are ALWAYS better than hyper threading.

an i3 will never beat an i5 unless the i5 was underclocked to hell and the i3 overclocked past reason.

What do you guys use to control your fan speeds? I put in some new fans and they are loud as fuck and not listed under my bios.

PWM headers on the motherboard are directly controlled by the BIOS.

PWM.

not listed ? they should just be on the first screen of the bios called case fan_01 or something. failing that if you have an asus board, AI suite's fanxpert is pretty cool and works great, set up your profiles and all that guff. and finally throw those shit fans away and get noctua's

Arizona and Tabasco out of 10.

If they are connected directly to the PSU they can't be monitored. This is why 3 pin fans are cheaper.

5820k is a great upgrade if you can utilize the power. I upgraded from a 4570k because I had some video encoding software that can make use of a hex core chip. And yes, the 5820k loves to be OCd, I have my own set to 4.3GHz stable at 1.31v though it doesn't really need it. Best bang for buck if you never plan on running 3+ GPUs as a 5820k can be had for around 300 and less if you bundle a board (microcenter anyway). I'd post a pic, but its already used in a guts thread.

this IS the guts thread, do you mean it's used the the bst thread im also wasting time on right now ? :)

You can post images in other threads, just for future reference.

Actually I suppose you could do it manually by manipulating the voltage with resistors or something. Absolutely retarded idea though.
