two of my standoffs aren't in 100%, but the mobo isn't touching the case. would this still prevent it from booting?
>>
I have a few.

1. There is a router that has usb port on it and you can practiaclly make a NAS out of a pendrive. Is it possible the make a live usb linux drive, make it as NAS and boot a few comps connected through ethernet with it?
Can I just install like 4 pcs at one time with one drive through network?

2. If the network part of the mobo is completely fucked, how can a usb to ethernet adapter would work? What would be the MAC if the card is seriously utterly fucked?

3. Normal mobos usually only have 1 ethernet port. Can you just setup a server on it and use it as dhcp and other shit using the ethernet as an input(from the ISP) and a usb to ethernet adapter as the output to a router?

What is the best method for creating a database/back-end for a website and implementing it? Security-wise? Speed-wise? Like a user account for example with sensitive information.

I've seen it done with Java-XML, JS-HTML-PHP-SQL, etc etc.

What languages should I be using to write my back-end and why? I know Java and I've done the JS-PHP-SQL route before. I want to know which one experienced webdevs recommend and why.

I use git for version control.

Let's say I use GPL-licensed code in my programs during early development before replacing it with my own code more tailored for my specific purposes.

If I then distribute my software and make the git repository available to users, does my software have to be GPL? There is no GPL-licensed code in the released version, but the repository still contains it and one could checkout a version which includes it.

I need a free website to upload and manage less than 10MB of data! Need suggestions because I have no idea who good hosts are.
I have a few pieces of small software for a small and personal userbase (~ 50 users at best), that I previously used Dropbox for.
The software has the ability to update itself by checking a fixed dropbox link for the current version number, and then downloads the new .exe from a different dropbox link. If automatic updates are enabled, it only checks once a day, and only if the software is launched.
This has worked fine for about 1 year, but now they have blocked all my dropbox files because they generate too many requests.

I need a new service to provide the following:
1. Control over which file is hosted on which URL. I want to be able to update the file in an URL without changing the URL, so that I can change the current version number for example.
2. Direct download links like example.com/example.txt, so that ONLY the file is downloaded from the URL. No file hoster that has download buttons please, as this won't work.
Bonus points for custom URL, but not neccesary

that's an iffy situation anon, your best bet would be to just remove the gpl code from your git even if it breaks the previous version. it's one of those things that could go either way and if some autist decides to press the issue it'd have to go before a judge or a mediator or something to get resolved cause there's no clear answer

Are turboshaft powered pneumatics with a variable flow valve precise enough for wearable robotics?

My friend keeps kicking this scrapyard iron man concept around and I keep telling him the test rig'll snap his arm off because of a miscalibrated valve and a jerky actuation curve

He says it's gotta be pneumatic for SAR and "field operations" and can't rely on a turboshaft to noncompressible fluid compressor like sarcos is trying to do

This thing is slated to weigh three quarters of a ton and he's ready to take out a small business loan just to try, please help me tell him this is insane and will ruin his financial future with nothing but a broken dream to show for it

I'm only here asking because some anons blew his concept off and it pushed him into mad science mode and he says even with a triple check and conferring with some mechanics at his factory that it's safe enough to try. Please help.

When you install USB device it will identify/install as a network device and then attach to the TCP/IP network stack. Don't ask for specifics because I am not a CS guy but this is what the programing behind it would result in.

The USB to ethernet adapter (physical device itself) would have a MAC address.

However because the external network data is sent into the device itself, and then sent into the motherboard via USB from the device, Windows needs drivers to understand the USB data that comes through (as with all USB devices.)

This is why, whilst USB ethernet adapters work, they don't work outside of your operating system, as the BIOS does not have code that can handle USB network adapters. There are tons of different manufactuers and models and there is no standard for the interface of USB ethernet adapters (infact that was the point of USB) so a BIOS would not know what the fuck to do with that data (Windows only does because of the drivers.) So you can't PXE boot etc from a USB ethernet adapter.

Hope this sheds some light.
Think of how you can create virtual network adapters in things like hyperV / VMware.
They dont actually exist, but they all bind to a physical network adapter. No reason that can't be a physical USB device.

If you're doing it over USB though not only are the devices slower (running at USB standards) but also you now have a bunch of overhead as your little device tries to translate data link packets into USB data and then Windows translates it back. Not a good idea!

Any geek squad workers here? Thinking of applying for a part time position as "advanced repair technician" as a 2nd job for weekends and early morning. Pay rate is abysmal at like $12.50 but I'm taking this job merely as an "on the books" experience builder for when I complete my BA degree, I'll have something.

I have an Associates in Network Administration, A+ cert, and over 5 years experience working with, building, troubleshooting PCs etc. My people skills are good as well.

Input? I'm 24 as well so does age matter? I work a very well paying job now but it's blue collar work and can't see myself doing this for the rest of my life so moving slowly into IT.

I need to repackage 400 files using MP4box https://gpac.wp.mines-telecom.fr/mp4box/

I can use it succesfully and get the desired result but only for a single file at a time. Simply trying *.aac just returns "not valid or cannot be found".

How would I go about doing this easily without having to manually input each one? They're all the same filetype in the same folder and need the identical treatment. I'm on Windows.

At what point you need to stop serializing data and start dumping it into a db?

My family owns a hotel-like-thing for students and I'm planning on building some software to help manage it.

People usually stay there between six months and a year, and there are around 70 people at any given time.

Point of this is that I know nothing about DBs, but I could let Java manage the info from files.

Considering we're not going to surpass the 5k entries in the near future, can I do it without a DB?

I've never used a for loop so I recognize this probably looks like shit but it almost works. Only problem is the file names have spaces and that seems to fuck it up. That's for basically connecting two graphics cards together, on AMD cards this is called CrossFire and on Nvidia it's called SLI. The result of this is that with applications that can support these bridges can make the cards distribute work load and therefore do more calculations for the application. This technique cannot however increase or double the amount of memory that the application can use but it's possible to distribute screen load on each card's memory.

It actually varies on the motherboard and the manufacturer and Microsoft's support on OEM boards. It could work, it might fail. If it boots up normally I'd still recommend running Sysrep /generalize , this will reconfigure your installation of windows to your current hardware. If it fails on booting, you can load into a disk image and use the command prompt there to run Sysrep on the installation as long as you can access your drive, this should fix problems but it's not guaranteed by microsoft. Windows 8 and Windows 10 have reportedly made this an automatic feature but it's not guaranteed as there are many firmware versions and boards out there.

tl:dr It might work, It might require some tweaking, it's better just to back up your files and do a clean install.
>>
>>54487135
>it's better just to back up your files and do a clean install.

I'll probably just do this, yeah. Interesting to know about, though.

My current motherboard is ASUS's epic republic of gamer board with some kind of built-in overclocking software it had me open when I was installing Windows, so it probably would not be a clean break. (I bought this motherboard because of its high ratings).

2nd for changing thermal paste/fan. You might be able to just dust the fan like I can on my 8350. I haven't had any problems since I put a corsair water cooler on. You might look into a cooler master fan+heatsink, those are almost as good as water cooling. Almost.

Repost from last thread (I may have been a little inebriated):

So I'm comfortable with R for statistics purposes, but my programming experience is mostly little challenges and contests online, and a few personal ongoing projects (text-based adventure, morse code flashcard game, and some chaos graphing stuff).

With some of the things I want to make, I feel like I'm hitting a boundary of what R is built for, so I'm looking to learn a "real" programming language. I'm telling you this because I want you to understand where I'm coming from when I say this:

Please, please sell me on why 0-based indexing is good. Why does almost every language use it?

Please give me an argument against 1-based indexing, that doesn't use some vague "well in some upper-level math applications," I want a logical argument, not an anecdote, and certainly not math level dick-measuring. Citing a couple of mathematically involved cases where 0-based works better is not a real argument, unless it demonstrates how its usefulness there tips the scales and makes all the intuitive 1-based applications an acceptable sacrifice.

Again, I do want to be convinced. I want to see the light.
>>
>>54488057
>>54488113

0-based indexing is how the computer works, so it is how serious programming languages work.

>0-based indexing
This relates to pointers. So a pointer is basically a variable which stores an address of another variable in memory. You can do addition/multiplication onto pointers.

So if we have something like:

myPointer = (some address);

myPointer[0] = 5; (store 5 in some address + 0)

Whereas, if you did the equivalent in a 1-based language:

myPointer[1] = 5; (store 5 in some address + 1 - 1)

It's just extra work. That's one reason, I'm sure there's plenty more.

Honestly, the main reason for using 0-based indexing is that's just how the computer does it (like above.) It gets really confusing when you mess with converting pseudocode to your code though.

I don't have an Ethernet cable long enough to reach my modem, I don't think it might be my wifi card because I've reached 40-45mpbs on a wireless connection before we had the TV's hooked up

>>54488212
this makes some sense to me. I like how in 0-based the length of a vector is the difference between it's highest and lowest indexes. I still think all of the things rendered unintuitive are too high a price though. Maybe with some experience that will change.

>>54488253
I haven't done pointer arithmetic or any sort of low-level programming, so I can't comment. Though this does seem like a special case like i mentioned. I mean even Python uses 0-based and it's not made for anything like that as far as I know. So what's the reason for that?

>It gets really confusing when you mess with converting pseudocode to your code though.
This is my issue with the whole thing. Programming languages are meant to be written by people. Should they not conform to human conventions where possible?

Yes, this is a major bitch, especially when you have poorly documented pseudocode. It's fucking terrible.

Enough for say Dark Souls 3 on Medium @ 60fps? I plan on dedicated 2gb of the ddr3 to the iGPU, overclocking the CPU to 4.5ghz+, and upping the RAM speed to 2800mhz as well.

1. pulls data from the ssd to a buffer as fast as it can (300-400M/s), while at the same time, writing it out to the external hdd
2. buffer fills quickly, as the external hdd can't write as fast as the ssd can read, once the buffer is full, the speed drops as it has to wait for the external to catch up (empty the buffer)
this is normal behaviour, nothing to worry about

If I'm building a completely new rig for gaming in the next month or so, do I want the 6600k or the 6700k? I might overclock it a little bit, but I've never done that before and I intend for the complete build to be around 1200 or so.

you should at least be able to use unlisted nodes

I was leaning that way. The last CPU I bought was the 2500k. Still kind of sour I sold that rig. Any suggestions for motherboards?

I use Xubuntu and for some reason folders from Home are now showing up on my desktop (Documents, Downloads, Pictures etc.). When I delete them from the desktop they are also deleted from Home. What do I do so they don't show up on my desktop?
