Neat, I bumped up the base clock on my Memelake i3-6300 system from 100 to ~120 and it surprisingly still works. 20% OC on a locked multiplier chip feels bretty gud.

I got it for an early christmas present because my Zotac Geforce GTS 250(eco) aka a 9800GTX was 5 years old and the fan sounded like a blow dryer and ran idle @58c. Plus the
"next gen" consoles sucked so I play games on my pc again, I had a 8800 Ultra back in 2007 it died in 2009 it was a BFG Tech card and they went under so a GTS250eco was all I could afford.

As beefy as the new card is, the card it replaced was an EVGA GTX 570 that kicked a mountain of ass for a little over 4 years. As far as I know, it's still going strong in a friend's computer. The 980 might be the shortest-lived card I've ever had, the way things are going.

HD 3000 is pretty dated but unless you see stuttering on HD 1080p resolutions on streaming sites theres no issue.

This is a really good idea actually. There are some low-binned xfx 380s that go for $170 (2gb) or $199 (4gb) and outperform the 960 in most games nowadays. Too bad reference is ~180-195W and non-reference anywhere between 220-250W.

Essentially it's the 'incremental upgrade' meme that comes in play here, which I don't believe in. They have ~5-10% higher clocks and 5-10% higher IPC, as well as more efficient cooling (FinFet) and some other goodies (more lanes, ddr4, m.2. raid 0, thunderbolt, etc.).
The real downside imo is that the socket is dead. 4 physical cores at most. Garbage for upgradability. You NEED a k variant to push for a decent amount of years, BUT overclocking reduces the lifespan of the cpu, paradoxically in terms of durability.

Please tell me you`re joking... Intel used to solder the IHS on all of their cpus. That is clearly fucking solder. That is precisely why the bottom of the IHS is gold and not aluminum.
The only reason you didn`t rip the entire die off is because the solder separated 3/4`s of the way across from heat cycling.
