I am going to preface this by saying I don't know too much about the inter-workings of a pc.

So I bought this shitty pre-built a few years ago, and I want an upgrade. Instead of spending a gorrilian dollars on a new computer I just want to replace a few components like the GPU, RAM and the HDD. My man questions is how do I know which new components I want will work with the ones that I already have in my computer.

Fuck me man, try harder next time. Look up the components in your pc, find their specs. Find components you want, come back here.
Then I'll help you.
>>
It all starts and ends with your motherboard since that is the only item you dont want to replace.

It will only support a certain socket for CPU's and will only support certain RAM (ddr2,3 etc)

gpus have been pci e for years

So if It supports DDR3 SDRAM, It could fit this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233778

What are the specs?

just go straight to /r/buildapc, the people who will help you here aren't the ones that have any knowledge. Plus it'll be faster.

Yeah but the GPU is the shitty OEM version, and I've been having issues with my HDD I think its failing. Just want to upgrade the memory, gpu and HDD

And lately the Realtek audio is using a TON of memory and causing my PC to lag
>>
>>54460534
you don't need to upgrade, unless you want to do some serious gaymin'
>>
>>54460574
Yeah that's why I want an upgrade. Thinking about a GTX 970
