I have seen them before in public transit etc. Usually some super beta guy maybe with a friend. If he is with a friend he will likely get the friend involved. They sort of have this edgy air to them. Now when I see them I tell the poor girl loud enough for others to hear. 80% of the time its "wtf are you talking about" or some other excuse like "I am an art student" but 20% of the time they just sit there really awkwardly and I almost regret bringing it up.

I'll go for something les bloat like #! crunchbang or some lxde based distro, any distro you pick you'll have to learn and adapt, with a les bloat and more simple distro you can try differents DE or VM , and not fuck things up, use a /home partition cause if you're learnig it'll take a while to find out which is your flavor, install several distros and use the same /home, it takes less than half to install linux than windows,

I feel that kde is pretty bloated, but it does work well most of the time.
Mate is pretty simple and clean. Works well. Very classic and traditional design and UI.
Xfce, same as mate but hasnt been updated in over a year. Arrive at your own conclusions.
Gnome. Different UI than the other 3. I dont like this ui since it is more spread out, requiring more mouse use.
For jus werk i would pick stock ubuntu, since i assume canonical spends more resources than other *buntus to make their distribution work well.

I had Linux Mint for a while but 3d vidya had stutters. The Linux kernel was too old and probably didn't have recent optimization made with SteamOS in mind.
