>THEY FELL FOR THE NAND SSD MEME
>>
3D memory came out?
>>
Can't wait for those cheaply priced 3D XPointâ„¢ storage drives! How can SSDs even compete??
>>
>Initially (July 2015) both SSD (PCIe) and DIMM form factors were stated to be in mass production by 2016;[17][2] however in early 2016 Guy Blalcok, CEO of IM Flash stated that the mass production of the chips was still 12 to 18 months away.[18]

>The anticipated price per bit was expected to be higher than NAND and lower than DRAM

When and how much? Too much stuff is getting announced but in the end it's either enterprise-only or costs more than an average PC or there is no any release date scheduled.
>>
>>54451117
It costs about the average of SSD and RAM
>>
>>54451099
Keep in mind that while this is mechanically and electronically compatible (so putting it in a DDR4 mobo won't fry either bits) the signals are completely different. Intel themselves have said you'll need to buy a special Xeon CPU to go with this to be released alongside it.

We're looking at the second coming of rambus here folks, isn't it glorious?
>>
>>54451186
This isn't RAM.
>>
>>54451136
Right now cheapest DDR4 is anywhere 13 to 15 bucks for 4 gigs sticks or 3 to 4 bucks per gig. And the cheapest 3-d nand i see is 74 bucks for 120 gigs or something like 60 cents per gig. So you wanna say those 3d xpoint will be somewhere around 2 bucks per gig? I'm taking random newegg prices btw sorting from lowest price. That's too much tbqh.
>>
>>54451204
You're absolutely right, it isn't. It's just yet another SSD technology which will help saturate the PCIe bandwidth. Intel are releasing it in DIMM form in which case it'll be both storage and RAM in the same go but it'll be slower than DDR4, more expensive than traditional SSDs and only compatible with these special Xeons they're releasing.

Again, isn't this glorious? I can't see this working at all.
>>
I don't even want the ddr4 level performance from SSDs, I just want them to be in price parity with HDDs. Then I'm switching all my storage drives to SSDs and keep the HDDs for backups; and finally my storage bay will be completely noise free.
>>
>>54451286
>I don't even want actual improvements, I just want to dwell a little bit longer in the current state of tech

What are you doing here? Don't you realize the massive improvement a potential fusion of non-volalitle storage and RAM can bring to the computer? This will change everything.
>>
>>54451338
SSD reaching price parity with HDD would already "change everything". There would be 0 reasons to buy HDDs anymore, and they could then fully concentrate on getting them faster, instead of introducing some new connection scheme every odd motherboard generation (that become outdated just as fast).
>>
>>54451396
NAND speeds are not even close to RAM speed. However, this new technology can potentially reach those speeds, thus making your whole storage basically a non-volatile RAM disk. You basically never have to boot again, you just turn your PC on, and it's instantly up. Every program you open is popping up as if it was already open, no initialization, nothing. Same with opening media, it's all open instantly.
>>
>>54451502
>However, this new technology can potentially reach those speeds

I don't care.

I want data density, not memory speed.
>>
>>54451632
XPoint does both of those things though you fucking idiot.
>>
>>54451502
>You basically never have to boot again, you just turn your PC on, and it's instantly up.

I never turn off my home PC so that ain't an issue.
And the mATX box at work boots up as fast as it takes me to put my bag down and sit in my chair.

>I don't even want the ddr4 level performance from SSDs
That's good, because you're not getting it. You'd be getting slightly better than ddr3 maybe if Intel aren't just overblowing their figures massively, which they probably are.
>I just want them to be in price parity with HDDs
Bwahahahahaha no. This is a solid step in the wrong direction.
>>
>>54450975
I feel for it 2.5 years ago - the SSD still works pretty well and going to use it until cheap NAND flood the market. Even then I'll continue to use the SSD I have until it dies.
>>
>>54452928
same, I got 3 ssd's I just use them all..
