I have a 970 but will it be worth it to upgrade?

As far as I can tell, this is shaping up to be a card for those who have not upgraded in 4+ years. The new Doom averaging around 120-140fps does not give me hope.

I bought a 1440p 144hz monitor and figured I would put it to good use once the 1080 dropped but it might be worth waiting.

It's simple. We keep up with the news.
When a new generation of cards comes out, we buy within that year. New cards almost always release around springtime. A generation lasts for two years (Nvidia: X70+X80 first, then X60 by Fall, followed by X80 Ti/Titan the following year/AMD: X80/X and X70/X first, then X90/X by Fall).
Kepler/GTX 700 series launched in 2012. Maxwell launched in 2014. And now Pascal launches this year. Volta will come in 2018.

My GTX 660 served me well for pretty okay time. The "old and worthless shit" actually depends on what kind of games you play and in what resolutions.

Im in kinda funny situation of still having monitor running with native 1680x1050 (everything bigger gets too small icons and fonts for me), so I run games with better details and lower than popular resolutions with more FPS. No matter how hard I would try, games like Ass Creed would still run like crap, since Ubi completely ignores the idea of optimizing.

Plus, both Nvidia and AMD have to release new models on regular manner, since this is their income source. People wouldnt buy new ones, if old are enough, so devs are ecnouraged to increase demands - sometimes in ulgy manner of ignoring optimization.

>>

>>
>>54447345
It's because poor people can't afford to buy new cards when they launch and have to wait for the prices to drop in order to buy them. They usually wait until Black Friday or right at the cusp of a new generation of GPUs.
>>
Somewhat unrelated question, I plan to buy a new rig with a gtx 1080 or two. Should I go ahead and buy the rest of the parts or wait to see what Intel's new processors will be like (not too far away, computex). Not sure how long it will take for them to hit the market after computex though.
>>
>>54447298
what you said is mostly accurate but that last part is just silly. capitalism encourages them to ignore their own optimizations in the first place. why spend money on that when you could be making another game? same with gpus, or any company under a capitalistic system.

Yeah, sure, why buy 10xx, when in next year you will get 11xx. Why buy 11xx, if you can just wait for 12xx. Why buy 12xx, when you can just wait a little bit more and buy 13xx instead. And who would buy 13xx, when with only little more patience, you can get 14xx!

With that kind of thinking, I spent using (almost) same setup for 6 years.

This is a fair point desu, the smart thing to do of course is wait for higher than average jumps in technology and if you've kept up with the node shrinks over the last few decades you'd know that running into the limit of 28nm and then dropping a staggering 14nm to 16nm is massive and that things such as 2x as fast dont come along very often, the last time we had even close to this was with the gtx 8800 over the prior gen. And maybe ATIs 9700 before that.

It's a great time to buy a card, if you wait more you'll miss out on a huge leap in performance for a relatively small cost.
>>

I wish that 1070 would drop to 250$ after month. Or 280.

A 970 is more than capable enough for 1080p, heck I game with a 780ti (which is simmilar in performance) on 1440p and have no problem running games on 60 fps with high settings.

That said, if you can still return it and get your money back, you should, you can probably get the 1070 in about a month for 50-80 bucks more and it will be at least 40% faster

Probably getting one of these for a machine learning rig. It's mainly text processing, so 8GB should be more than enough. 600$ (though as always it will probably be 600€+ here) is a pretty good deal for a card that is bound to outperform the Titan X.

If you're just getting into it a Titan X may be overkill. Current memory issues with neural nets are mainly related either to resolution of the images you're processing or the actual size of the network you're making. Neither of these are problems you're likely to run into when you are starting out, so a 1080 or even a 1070 will still be a pretty good choice.

Again, poor people are poor because they're dumb. They make dumb financial decisions that pile up their debt rather than eliminating them and making their money work for them. I haven't bought any computer parts on credit since 2014 and I've spend nearly $5k on them alone.
