Got a tricked out Windows 2000 Pro VM set up with XP/Vista kernel extensions.

Post some softwares and let's see if it'll still run on this old OS.

Your main obstacle is going to be software that checks for XP/Vista or newer and doesn't even try to run.

I tried something similar with windows ME. I could shitpost on 4chan with it using opera 12 installed with KernelEx.

Next I'll set up a 95 or 98 shitbox, and then look into 2k. Is there a wiki or something I could read? How do I install the kernel extensions?

Check MSFN and BlackWingCat's blog. I can't read the moonrunes, but you want the patch here:

It also enables up to 128GB of RAM and up to 16 threads.

It's the usual PAE 32-bit workaround, so you'll need to have hardware and drivers that work with PAE. You'll also need a registry patch (same page) to enable the number of cores you have.

If you're running on bare metal on newer hardware, you'll have trouble with SATA drivers. Try slipstreaming BlackWingCat's matrix storage driver package, or the uni_ata universal driver.

Not sure why my VM isn't showing the full 6GB of RAM I gave it though. Usual thread limit on 2000 Pro is 2 threads, so at least that part worked.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/microsoft_windows_2000_unofficial_sp.html

If you want to build an almost fully up-to-date ISO, use the HFSLIP package here:
http://blog.livedoor.jp/blackwingcat/archives/1763141.html

Download, concatenate, and extract the CAB files, then shove your ISO contents into SOURCE\ and run the bat file. A few odd places in the system will be in Japanese, but it works for the most part.

Pull out the unwanted addons like Chrome or Safari before you run the script though.

There's no reason to not take advantage of what you've got, there actually are some useful security fixes offered by enabling the POSReady hack that while definitely marginal and rarely exploited, are still a good idea to cover up if you can.

Viruses aren't really the issue, that's endemic to Windows no matter how many updates you receive.

If that's your reasoning then I still don't understand why you simultaneously are fine with XP, it's a shitty patch-on-patch clusterfuck of code to begin with, and well within the realm of being backdoored if that's your other fear.

Depending on what they do with the kernel, it might even be able to run 64bit application. I don't see there being a limit to what _could_ be done, just more about what is _allowed_ to happen. Microsoft might have something in place to prevent those who would from doing so.

No it means if the OS had a type-1 hypervisor which it won't without being a server product, you could run XP under 2000. With a type-2, there is OS integration so it may or may not work.

HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM

Going to try an older version of Bochs or changing the settings a bit.

>A lot of games wanted direct hardware access which the NT kernel wouldn't provide as readily as 9x on DOS.
I never encountered a single showstopping problem with that and I played a shitload of games at the time. Although I do recall having to fuck with compatibility settings to play certain older games. W2K was still superior to 98SE for every modern game though.
>>
>>54444925
Why are you running DOSBox on a 98se machine?
>>
>>54444925
I'll try and reply some more to boost the thread.

Question, how feasible is Windows 2000 on a older computer? I have a system with a Pentium D, and 1.5GB of RAM
>>
>>54445041
you can easily do xp there
>>
>>54445041
Install xp, it'll run really well. I'm running mine on a 400mhz celeron and it's smooth.
>>
>>54445041
>Pentium D, and 1.5GB of RAM
Super feasible since running 2000 with Pentium 4's single core with or without hyperthreading and 512+MB RAM was the norm.
>>
>>54445041
You could even run something like Ubuntu mate if you want something more modern

2000 would be fine on that, though these modern webpages might drag it down. It would also run XP fine too; depends if you like 2000 or XP.

The trick is burning a bootable floppy image on a usb flash. the bios will see it as a usb fdd. No, it has nothing to do with malware. It's just a natural form of cruft that builds up over time. Traditionally this is known as "Windows creep" and it still exists today to a much lesser extent.

The only way to keep Windows systems running at fresh install speeds is to stop using it right after installation. XP and Vista suffer pretty bad from it, 7 improved it a lot, and it's not much of a problem in 8 and 10 (but it still lingers). Obviously this isn't practical, which which leaves one with reinstalling once every 1-2 years to keep things running smoothly.

>>
>>54450128
This is true. If you can stick to a single set of programs the whole time and avoid installers (plain portable exes are better) and anything else that fucks with your registry or leaves shit scattered everywhere you'll have a much better time.

This is hard to do though, as windows developers have a weird love for installers, fucking with the registry, and leaving files scattered everywhere. It's so weird - mac devs have always been about keeping things small and self-contained while linux devs are all about keeping it all meticulously maintained with package managers. Only windows developers take the path of pure anarchy.
