I'd like a pyra for fun.
But the lack of any release date, or even a general idea, makes me too uneasy.

Could so easily just evaporate, pre-order money included.

>>

It's not a really fair comparison, the GPD WIN wins every time. Pre-orders are like $300 too.
>>
>>54420260
The pyra is but the gpd win isn't. That one is a fully fledged umpc with 4gb of ram. I think a ton of people are going to want to buy one including normies.
>>
>>54420382

For doing what? Its a piece of shit

Shitposting on the go, using x86 software, streaming vydia, and basically using it like a laptop.

It's going to most likely sport a UEFI boot with the ability to turn secure boot off. So you'll be able to install gentoo or whatever on it.
>>
>>54420382

>I think a ton of people are going to want to buy one including normies

Do you actually have autism? That thing is firstly absolutely pointless, secondly it makes no sense, the Sony UX series time has gone.

Why would anyone want to interact with windows on a device like this?

Now instead of only being able to play angry birds on a 5.5" screen you will be able to run x86 software. I'm definitely be inclined to buy one when it comes out. Though the estimated $500 retail price tag does sound discouraging.

I'm torn, for so much time, I was inclined to pre-order the Pyra, because I love the form factor, the focus on Linux and the battery life. But the hardware looks so outdated... On the other hand, even if x86 compatibility is a deal maker, there is no guarantee the GPD Win will have total hardware support on Linux, my experience with the Jewtel Compute Stick was discouraging... Also, what is the expected battery life of the GPD Win?
>>
>>54420862
Battery capacity is 6,000 mAh and assuming it uses a standard phone battery, 22.2 Wh. The x5-z8500 cherry trail x86 atom it sports has a tdp range of 2-4 watts and the 720p screen probably uses 2 watts at most.

So
~50% average cpu load + screen at full brightness: ~6 hours
~25% average cpu load + screen at low brightness: ~12 hours
~100% average cpu load + screen at full brightness: ~4 hours
>>
>>54419761
Windows 10 is probably the lightest OS for it, so it's a good pick.
>>
>>54419549
Tried out a prototype of the pyra at the Gamescom in Cologne and I came to the conclusion:

>uncomfortable heavy and thick
>cheap plastic, feels cheaper than the 3ds
>the edges of the body even beveled were still a bit sharp
>good display
>touch worked kinda so-so and sucked with linux
>navigation in linux was pure cancer in it's final form, using sticks for mouse movement is disgusting
>buttons were good enough
>sticks been pure cancer in terms of placement and quality

This is what happens when you throw all the features together combined with non-existing usability.
>>
>>54420816
What freedoms? The Pyra has blobs literally everywhere.

If you want a free console, try the GCW Zero. It has a FOSS 3D GPU driver and I think the Wi-Fi is blobless too.

I support free hardware that is affordable, performant, and most importantly will actually release. The pyra is none of these.
Picked up the GPD WIN early on and kept an eye on the comments. The manufacturer replied that the bootloader would be normal UEFI and should support linux although they stressed that GPD would not support linux.

Any opinions on the Pocket CHIP?
Both devices in the OP are way too fucking expensive for what they are, but the chip is only 50 bucks, has a screen and full keyboard in a body that looks like it's the size of a Game Boy.
Also runs full ARM linux for that SSH and emulator capability.

I totally agree. Why downgrade from an advanced computer in my pocket, with all the sensors and wireless connectivity I want, on a completely customizable platform with incredible modding capabilities to that bulky hunk of shit?

Android is the answer to computing with (mostly) freedoms, and you can always run a new ROM even if you don't like it!
>>
>>54425925
They should have used micro USB C, like on phones, for the micro 3.0 port. Plus, why include USB 2.0 when USB 3.0 is backwards compatible anyways?? The only things I know that use that micro 3.0 port is the Galaxy Note 3 and some external hard drives. Just hurry up and move over to USB C.
>>
>>54429323
Chromium/Chrome OS runs pretty quick on lowend hardware so that might not be too bad an idea. You can install linux software on it with crouton and just installing xiwi.

It would be cool if it was possible to install software straight from Gentoo's portage software repository on chrome os.
>>
>>54419549

Tablets, an established market, are dying because large phones are good enough for nearly anyone's needs in that size range. When everyone is already walking around with a 5"+ computer in their pocket what use do they have for a redundant device that has a lower rez screen running Windows.

If you really need x86 on a portable system you'd get one of those $100 Chink tablets like the Chuwi HI8 Pro and a Bluetooth keyboard. Better specs, screen, almost as portable, save yourself $600

I pre-ordered the US mobile edition pyra - 4GB

Because money is no object and I'm a freetard with no UMPC and a hankering for one.

BTW, to set the record straight, the only blobs needed by the Pyra are for the 4G modem and 3d graphics. The chip has seperate 2d graphics acceleration that works with the FOSS etna_viv driver. Same driver used by the GCW Zero.

They should just make a Bluetooth Or USB keyboard attachment with the joysticks and SD card slots on the bottom and let the nexus be the top screen attachment. Well, apart from the SD cards stuff, they actually tried to do that with the iControlPad2 which never took off.

IIRC this is an antitrust issue in brought up in Germany and applying to all of the EU. It has to allow you to install another OS or Microsoft gets in trouble, even if that support is just allowing Linux to get SecureBoot certification (which some distros have) or enabling a legacy mode.
