Okay.

I own both TI86 and an HP48g.

I got them when I was in high school, and basically always used the TI86 because that is the one I got first and... well, I never had a real trouble with that.

So tell me, /g/, can you list some real reason why I should stop using my Ti86 and start using my HP48G ?

Please note that I have used many "advanced functions" (matrix, graphing, programming) and have never been disappointed (considering it's a calculator, after all).

My HP 50hkilled itself today. The batteries it came with became hot enough to almost burn me, and hot enough to start melting the back of the calculator and the battery tray. I put new batteries in and it will not turn on. I was still within Amazon's return time, so I am getting a refund. I am not sure if it was the calculator or the cheap batteries it came with that did it. It had worked fine for ~3 weeks.

My ti-89 I got for $3 at a thrift store a couple years ago is still running strong though.

this is the cheapest TI calculator with CAS. you can get one for a decent price. Most people don't even know this calculator exists it is exactly like the other TI NSPIRE CAS except without a color screen, so it is a more affordable alternative.

Tbh the only reason I didn't get a Casio is because they don't have CAS. If you don't need CAS go for a Casio.

I have never tried an HP50g it is cheaper and I guess a graybeard calculator.

So I had a TI-83 and used it up until it broke in the middle of my freshman year of college. Since then, I've been using a mix between my phone and a small TI pocket calculator. Lately though, I've been longing to have a dedicated calculator. (Physics + Engineering here)

I have been thinking of picking up the HP 50g since I hear a lot of good shit about it, and it's way cheaper than the TI alternatives with the same features. I know fuck all about RPN though, so I was wondering if anybody wanted to shed some light on it.

How is the programming? Are there better alternatives?
>>
>>54413390
With RPN, you perform calculations using a stack and a postfix notation.
It eliminates having to do intermediate scratchpaper work by pushing the burden of order of operations from the calculator to the user.
It also means you don't have to bother with parantheses.
>>
>>54413441
Oh, that's pretty easy actually. I can't think of times when I would find it useful, but I'm sure I would find a way to make it so.
>>
>>54413390
>I have been thinking of picking up the HP 50g since I hear a lot of good shit about it, and it's way cheaper than the TI alternatives with the same features. I know fuck all about RPN though, so I was wondering if anybody wanted to shed some light on it.

There are a few good videos out there, look up RPN tutorial on the Youtube. It will show you why people like RPN and how it's useful.

>How is the programming? Are there better alternatives?

The 50g comes with:
>User RPL
>System RPL
>Saturn assembly
>ARM assembly

All can be developed onboard with the very nice tools built into the OS. You can also get HPGCC and compile C programs for it, but RPL is a nice useful language which integrates with every corner of the system beautifully.
>>
>>54413560
That's pretty cool. More I look at it, more I think it's just a damn fine calculator. (Especially since it's 50 bucks, and offers the same shit the TI-89 does at a fraction of the price.)

I think I'll pick it up.
>>
Why has nobody created a graphing calculator emulator? Why are we forced to use these expensive, superfluous devices in the 2016?
>>
>>54413745
They have, actually multiple people have. That doesn't stop people who prefer dedicated devices from buying real ones.
>>
>>54413745
>superfluous
Call me when your smartphone runs for a year or ten without changing or charging the batteries.

There are 15c owners out there still working with the original batteries, 35 years later.
>>
Just snagged a 16c in a lot of "junky old" calculators for $30.
>>
>>54413783

That's nice and all. I'm not against using old tech. But there's no logic to forcing students and school systems to buy outrageously-priced dedicated calculators when the same calculations could be completed on a computer they've already purchased.

If you like old tech, I've got no problem, but the system is corrupt.
>>
>>54413848

>>54399556
>falling for a gimmick

I bet you bought one of those Nspire pieces of shit.
>>
>>54413848
Nobody forces kids to use calculators, they can use pencil and paper too.

It's too easy to cheat even on a HP-50g if you turn step-by-step mode on, it will show you all the work for your math problem (all steps!).
>>
>>54403256
Of course there is, the 50g is objectively better because it's actually real RPN and not limited shit like the Prime is.
>>
>>54403256
The Prime's still in alpha, software quality sucks, tons of bugs, the fucking thing has a severely limited battery life, programming is awkward and you lose the ability to program on the fly right on the stack, etc etc.

Prime's a fucking abortion. Whoever decided that abandoning the primarily *PROFESSIONAL* engineering and sciences calculator market to instead try to compete in the TI DOMINATED education market should be shot. TI has that shit locked up, to the point that all major textbooks assume you have a TI and even put TI keystroke instructions in the books for you.

Prime has a good CAS (same as the 50g), it's fast, blah blah but it's not up to speed, it lacks a serial port, it's too big for what it is (all dat empty space!), etc. It's like they tried to smash together a bunch of off the shelf stuff and call it a 'system' but the system's parts interact very poorly with each other.
>>
>>54413876
>>54414021

Students here are mandated to purchase a texas instruments graphing calculator. I understand the argument that it might be easier to cheat, but I'm sure there are ways to prevent that. Hell, I remember copying notes into my old graphing calculator in school.

What I don't undersrand is the price. How the hell does anyone justify such a price for an electronic device that has been in production for 15 years? I would bet that the cost to manufacturer them is somewhere between 3 and 7 dollars per unit.
>>
>>54413560
Alright. I'm sold. It's 70 bucks cheaper than a Ti-89 for the same features, and I can still be babied by algebraic input while I learn RPN.

Cheers, anons. I'm excited about a fucking calculator.

Do't know, don't care
I'd take a 12C over a TI calculator with all that.

>>54415360
>I mean, that kind of hampers the speed to have to click it in
Which is why you use the numpad. And yeah, it's El Capitan.
>>
about to get my 50g for uni will it fuck me on my physics exam i have next week?

If you don't know RPN, then yeah.
Also if your professor doesn't allow graphing calculators on exams, then yeah.

I just need to do sin cos x / for this one.

How hard can that shit be for RPN.
>>
>>54415727
oh nevermind, the quick start guide explains that part pretty quick
>>
>>54415727
You have to enter the number before pressing sin/cos function button.... What kind of physics exam are you taking??
>>
>>54415761
The second one about electricity and shit

My final
>>
>>54415787
Well make sure you're efficient with any kind of calculation then.
Also make sure you know how to enter numbers in scientific notation since you're going to be using e&m constants
>>
>>54415886
Yeah I don't know of any time I don't have some micro or nano constant hanging around the numbers, those fuckers.
>>
>>54415955
Also things like exponents, square root, etc. Just saying, since a new RPN user depending on how much they have practiced may trip up on those things.

I don't know how much time exactly you have to practice with it, but IMO if you don't know the button locations perfectly are completely used to the notation, I'd just stick with whatever calculator you were using before for this exam, then take the time to learn the HP after.

> Does it even have a networking protocol
HP-48 series calculators have many networking protocols and physical layers available to them. IR, serial, USB, and you can even run a TCP/IP stack on the calculator and use the Internet.

HP calculators were networking back in the 1970s.

>or decent 3D engines
It's not meant for 3D real time gaymen, the HPs are math machines. However, you've been able to plot 3D graphs since the 1990s (HP was first here) and manipulate them of course.

>M68K master race
The problem isn't the fucking processor you numbskull, it's TI. They've been taking every extreme measure they can in order to stop you from running your own code on the bare metal. Meanwhile HP gives you bare metal assembly language development and un-gimped RPL / System RPL out of the box.

One day TI will make some unbreakable DRM processor-based calcs, push them as cheating-proof, and your whole calculator community will be left in the dust.

HP: Here, have access to the hardware and execute any memory address directly if your really want to, you're the boss...

TI: LOL dude, brogramming! Let's hack our calculator and make a Game Boy! Brotastic!

>>54416060
Yeah I just lost my calculator recently only to notice the meme pop up here.

At least 50g has retard mode option.
>>
>>54416081
Seriously just watch a tutorial video and turn RPN on, in 15 minutes flat it'll feel 100% natural.
>>
>>54416081
I just remembered it has an algebraic mode.
So yeah if you mess up with RPN, just switch to that

Know the button locations though.
>>
What's the point of getting a graphing calculator with graphing software being so accessible?
>>
>>54416328
I don't know.
I never use the graphing function of my 50g, I only have it because it's a good RPN calculator that doesn't cost $300 used.

Now that I know about those SwissMicros clones of old scientific HPs I will probably get one of those.

I was planni ng on buying these instead of of the TI30X IIS, which I've used pretty much all my life. Seems like this casio has some more functions to it. One of the amazon reviews says that if you're doing something, and the calculator goes to sleep, it forgets what you were doing unlike the TI which has memory from sleep. Is that true?

Like go enter 1+1 into the calculator, and then let it go to sleep, is 1+1=2 still on the screen when it wakes?

Looks like you just choose a bunch of random posts and replied to them with random shit, then choose a random image.

Off yourself.
>>
>>54418622
not really.

the first one is because it's funny that who cares the resolution of a calculator

the second two, because they are using android calculators.

the third, because they are using non-calculators in general and I wanted to continue being a dick to autists.

and the picture is richard stallman, you fucking idiot. not random on /g/
>>

fuck the third was my highschool calculator and the fourth was non-calculators

>inb4 yeah i'm this autistic

>because they are using non calculators in general
Thanks for confirming my assumption that you're a retard.

Also, just for next time, you're supposed to choose an image that is relevant to your post or relevant to the thread. Stallman is 100% to both your post and the thread. We're not talking about free software here and as such, within the frame of reference of this thread, it is in fact random. Simply because he is relevant to the board doesn't mean it compliments your post. In fact, it reduces the quality of your post due to previously mentioned randomness. Not that your post needed help on being low quality. The fact that you mass quoted and made extremely low effort replies is enough. Nobody likes that in a post.
Try again next time.

Once I saw this thread, I went and popped some batteries in my dad's HP16C. It was a gift from some NASA scientists he interned under.
I like how they keyboard is a superset of the instructions available, rather than an abstraction over abstracted abstract interactions like modern computing devices.

I'd like to buy a recent-enough HP RPN calculator for /g/ autism points, maybe a 50G.
