If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I fucking love it. That Quadro is incredible for older games that often have compatibility problems with new GPUs, and it works beautifully with nGlide. It even has enough power to run rFactor, though the 2GB of mismatched RAM I've stuck in there is affecting performance.

The P8700 doesn't quite have the muscle for Whiplash thru Dosbox, however, but nothing will run that as smooth as a real DOS machine.

I'm seriously thinking about getting a tablet version Elitebook since it's cheaper than an X220/x201

Also, since you guys seem more knowledgeable about computers and boards and shiz.
Whoever designed and said MSATA should only have SATA 3G, is... stupid.
Clevo did this on my laptop and they didn't broke out the pads for the second 6G port on the chipset.
I only have an SSD on this laptop and 3G is fucking the performance of the drive, should I cut the traces going to the HDD and connect them to the MSATA port to have 6G there? What are the risks with signal integrity and shiz because of using just a crappy cable or should I shield it or use proper SATA cables?

From what I can gather on the internet, the T1 is a newer version of the T2 panel, both made for the x230, but still fully backwards compatable, apparently slightly better quality, uses less power, weighs a little less.

I guess I will just be very specific that I will only accept an A+ panel (as stated on his listing) with the exact model part number.

I have a T420s. It is definitely slim and small. Feels lightweight, too. The 900p screen isn't terrible, but isn't great either. The keyboard is amazing, but takes a little getting used to.

Only downsides are battery life and heat. I have the i7, so maybe an i5 would be better, but it runs pretty hot. And the fan is a bit high pitched. As for battery, I am pretty sure mine is near the end of it's life, as I get about an hour out of it, maybe a bit less. I plan on getting a new main battery as well as an ultrabay battery, but both are pretty expensive. I expect at least a couple hours, maybe three, with both new batteries.

I say get one if you're in college and just need a simple, reliable, easy to carry laptop.

Also, does anyone have one of those exploded thinkpad wallpapers for a T420s? There isn't one in the imgur gallery.

Time for the T9600 swap!
Originally, I'd replaced my Fujitsu Lifebook's C2D-P8600 with a T9600, but the T5010's heatsink can't deal. So the T9600 can go into this E6400, which you can see has a more substantial thermal solution.

The Fujitsu requires the removal of 16 screws to remove the case door, heat sink and CPU. The Dell needs only 5.
>>
>>54400492

>>54400505
Last word on nb51 was they'd be about $400. Assuming they ever ship of course. Supposedly, a batch just went on sale to nb51 members on May 1, and they were considering a second batch to sell overseas at some unspecified later date.

I managed to score a prototype through 'connections'--- so I know it's real (and it even works pretty well, though it has a few rough edges)

They are. It's not that much of an improvement in raw numbers, but I can definitely tell with single-core games and emulation.

It's really become a thigh-cooker, though the heatsink assembly seems to perform well and the fan has a intake flow rate high enough to be felt with your hand below the machine.

...BAM we are in for some shit.

My last google tab tree led me to bookmarking a couple chinese sites for a better panel from the X1 Carbon line of products which also required an extended cable. But it's been quite a while since I came across that solution and held off because there was something like a 60-day shipping delay.

I need to buy a new wireless NIC for my x201 because I keep getting this:

Should I try and get a new internal card or give up and by a usb nic?

>how much of a difference does the nvidia 4200m card make compared to integrated graphics?
It halves the battery life, boils your nuts and makes installing a sane OS rather difficult, for no real gains at all.

Unless you want to "hardcore" game (but then, get a modern gamer laptop, not a thinkpad) or you have a specific need for a portable workstation (then you probably dont have to ask this question here) with a certified Quadro card, dedicated GPUs in laptops are a really bad idea.

thinklight is fucking useless if you use your keyboard heavily and get shiny keys
>>
>>54405155
But you probably wont need it to find one of the keys you use all the time, but probably to find something you never use, like µ.

Also, with thinklight, you can just grab a cheap, new keyboard, or even relabel some keys, whereas with backlit, you always need a new, expensive keyboard.

t. someone who bough an AZERTY machine, because it was 100€ cheaper, expecting to just slap some labels one it, like on the last machine, but now cant really do it, because backlight…

Depends on what you're doing with them.

If it's just shitposting/music/etc a T60 would do fine. I can't tell if it's SXGA+, but to me that would trump the T410s's x900 display. If it's

then definitely not.

T410s is going to have better specs but I wouldn't expect any better battery life.

Really, you should keep both. But as much as I hate to say it, if it's going to be your only machine keep the T410s. Don't expect to get much money for the T60.

I'd keep both.
Keep as many machines as you can reasonably administrate. Have a backup machine and a backup for your backup. Even if you don't really do anything critically important, it sucks to lose a machine for any reason, even for a day, and having a small fleet ensures you are never without computing power.

I would keep the T60, to answer your question.

How long do you think a refurbished X220 would last? 5years? 10?

it's already five years old, but with what intel's doing with CPU voltage it could last 10. battery life will be comparatively absolute shit though.
>>
>>54410034
Then I'd have to replace the battery, which parts are the most likely to break, and are they easy to replace? for a computer I'd like one that I can maintain, the HP laptop I've got now requires you to disassemble pretty much everything just to replace thermal paste.
>>
>>54410148

nothing is likely to break. It's very servicable, parts are cheap, and all you would need is a phillips head as far as I know.

>>
>>54410373
A thinkpad certainly seems like a more attractive option than the Dell.
When you said it would possibly last five years more, did you mean five years until some irreplaceable piece of hardware breaks, or that it simply becomes too outdated to use?

outdated, more than likely. If you take care of the OS and maybe stick in an SSD at some point it'll run until you drop it from 15 feet up or what have you.

I put an i7-2820QM into my T420 last night. Booted right up in record time, and everything works great.

Except one thing: it appears to have a screen issue when waking up from sleep. If I walk away from it for 15 minutes, come back, and hit a key, nothing happens. I'm pretty sure it's on and awake, because if I tap the shift key enough times I get that annoying Windows accessibility popup beep.

If I shut the laptop, then open it back up, the Windows login screen appears. So, it's like the screen initialization fails with a regular, non-closed sleep.

Any ideas?

You can get the better 1600x900 panel from an Alienware M14x R2 (if you had 1600x900 originally, if you had 1366 then you need a different cable). You won't have to solder anything to replace the screen and clean up the CPU heatsink, but you will want to get some good thermal paste to replace the old waxy stuff between the CPU and heatsink.

Got a T431s, didn't even know they existed. Upgraded from a T410. The T410 is now in my work truck for DDC BAS systems, fuck I hate my shops Comcrap laptop, its fucking terrible. The T410 is 6 years old, I bought it when it was about 2 years old, original owner didn't know what he had. Had a non-genuine copy of 7 on it, so he just unloaded it. A simple reload and all was fixed. Considering I paid $300 CAD for it 4 years ago, I got my money out of it.

Couple things with the T431s though,

This new touchpad dealy, not crazy about the buttons but I'm getting use to it.

Second is the resolution, fuck it's wide. Never used this aspect ratio before. I think my T410 was 16:10, 1440x900. This is 1600x900. It's nice but its very wide.

Overall, I am happy with it, but the older style keyboard was nicer and the touchpad was easier to use (as was the trackpoint), the build quality is nice. And considering the price, I'm very happy. Paid the same for this that I did for the T431, so I'm content.

I found this, it intrigues me. Says its for the T431s, I think I have some paypalbucks kicking around, might be worth getting this.

What guide did you follow to do this? Hows the functionality? I am aware you will have to swap out the wireless card to have it functioning correctly.

Is there an easy way to install the FHD display into X220 by yourself? With as little soldering as possible.

Is there a guide with all the parts and where to get them?

Just stick with the stock display. It's part of the X200 experience.

Portal 2, COD: MW + MW2 (at lower settings), and some old DOS games on my x230. Haven't tried anything else. Not really sure what else it's capable of.

Played HL2 on a T60p for a little while but sweet Christ did it ever get hot.

Civ 5, Dwarf Fortress, Binding of Isaac: Rebirth/Afterbirth. They run pretty well on my X220.

I haven't done one, but was it a CCFL or LED inverter? IIRC you need a CCFL inverter.

I'm amazed it still works with a torched cable, kek.
