If you want Debian with stability, use stable.
If you want Debian with modern-ish packages, use Sid.

If it doesn't have to be Debian, use Gentoo stable.
Gentoo has one of the biggest official repositories of any GNU plus Linux distro.

But does it also have quantity over quality approach that Debian has?
E.g. is gnome paint (broken software) included?

Gentoo desktop users should use ~amd64 (testing) desu. It's quite stable, actually.
>>
>>54390333
Another debian (testing) user reporting in.

It really makes no sense to use anything else. I have tried: Slackware, Red hat, Fedora, Gentoo, Ubuntu, CentOS, openSuse, Arch, Linux from scratch, Void linux, backtrack, Ã…ngstrom on my 2nd gen ipod, and probably some I've forgotten.

And every time i came back to debian. It just works. Stable is fantastic for servers. I ran debian sarge on a home box for years. Testing is great for every day desktop/laptop use.

The best part? You dont have to only use stable, or testing, or unstable. There's pinning so you can have stable as main and then certain packages from testing. 'apt-get -t {stable, testing, unstable} install' works beautifully too.

Debian developers are organized into teams with team leaders. Theres quality control. There are security updates from security.debian. You can easily install a grsec kernel. Hell you dont even need to use the linux kernel, you can use the freebsd kernel, or gnu hurd if you wish. You can do whatever the fuck you want and it will just work.

It's unfinished software that - like other, smaller unfinished software projects - gets included as Debian package for ages.
It's a poster child for Debian.
