In countries where the majority of energy is generated through ecologically friendly and sustainable fuels, they're a genuinely better solution. Well, one thing you're not considering is scaling advantages. For example, diesel-electric locomotives are both more efficient and better for the environment for various reasons than diesel locomotives. Even if the cars are powered by oil or coal at some stage, you could use a more efficient generator and you could have cleaner management of pollution and waste.
