Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

What can be causing this?

Got mine about a month ago anon. 8gb RAM version?
>>
>>54380231
could be a stuck power button, could be set to restart on power loss in the BIOS, could be a problem with the embedded controller firmware. I would start by flashing the latest BIOS, and once that's done go in there and load the default settings.
>>
>>54380231
BIOS has a setting that automatically turns the computer on if it's plugged into AC. See if that's checked.

Two other very unlikely scenerios are it could be a stuck power button or it could be receiving hibernate power-on signals?
>>

You can get an X230 for much cheaper, and better performance too.
>>
For college? You can get away with something a lot cheaper than an x260. If you don't care about having a 1080p screen on a 12' display, get either an x220/230, if you do care get an x240 and swap the trackpad with the x250 trackpad. The hardware from something as late as an x220 would probably be more than enough. The x250/260 are still carry a premium price for being new.

Just but a lenovo t530, I got the i5 version... Can I upgrade the CPU to the i7 manually? If so, do you know where I can find a guide?
>>
>>54380545
197 though most of those are pretty shallow cycles. Unplugging it for 10 minutes counts just as much as letting the battery run down completely by that metric.
>>
>>54380047
I did the same with a T60, so I hear you. /tpg/ just seems to be filled with destitute jews that are incredibly worried about resale value for some reason.

I'd be a little leery of swapping a whole T4X panel in. Hold off for somebody who knows for sure one way or the other. I swapped a backlight over from a dead T41 screen to a T60 screen once, but that's it.

The good news is the T60/p SXGA+ screen is pretty nice for a TN. It's worth the upgrade and perfect for the 14.1" 4:3 form factor.

I'm liking my X220T. I will warn that Linux has terrible touch support and unless an application explicitly uses the touchscreen, it just acts like a mouse. You might want Win10 if you actually want to use your touchscreen as a tablet. If you want to draw, that works pretty well

I just bought a x220i with a broken screen for $40 AUD from a local classified ad which apart from the screen is completely immaculate, not even a scratch on the rubberized finish. Decided to spend a little more and get a $98 AUD IPS display instead of a shit TN.

Pretty pumped for when my display arrives, going to be quite a good little setup, really love the 12.5'' size.

Any eGPU owners in the house?
Specifically anyone who knows about the PE4C 3.0 adapter?

Mine randomly goes to shit. So randomly that I can't even say why it does it, and I've only found a handful of comments online across all the forums I could find describing my issue, with no one talking about how to fix it.

On Windows 7 I randomly get "nvidia display driver has stopped working and recovered," or just a black screen with the audio buzzing loudly/looping similar to how "hl2.exe has stopped responding" sounds like, or just a straight up bluescreen. The bluescreen only talks about generic stuff like check drivers and try safe mode.

On Windows 10 it worked a couple of times but now just says not enough resources, and constantly black screens and recovers with the "nvidia display adapter has stopped working" message

Sometimes my X220 can work just fine for five or more hours before the egpu thing dies, other times it's as short as 5 minutes.

The fastest crash I got out of it was when I was stress testing it (in hopes of figuring out why it crashes) with a few hard to run games, which had the temps up to 90 degrees C and the egpu stopped working a few minutes later.
But I've also managed to play hours on end on other games before any crash.

Any help would be appreciated, been playing on and off with this thing for around a month now and I'm even considering buying a different egpu adapter to see if another would work.
>>
>>54383444

I just wanted something super portable to have as a dedicated linux rig that will contrast my i7 t520 which sits on my desk all day thanks to running an eGPU.
>>
>>54383636

Could the connector be coming loose? Thats all I can think of.

I've had great success with the EXP GDC beast. Only ever bluescreen was when I unplugged the display by accident.

I'm rolling an R7 240 in mine. Seems to be the best card for the dock right now, but I expect that to change once we see what 14nm brings to lower-end cards.

Regarding games, I don't play a whole lot of super-demanding stuff. DMC4 runs beautifully, which isn't a huge surprise considering how well-optimized that game is. Legend of Grimrock runs well, but I haven't tried the sequel yet. Source games run flawlessly. Dark Souls runs...around console level? It isn't pretty. Anyway, the main benefit is that it solves one of the T601F's only flaws, which is GPU selection. You either get an Intel board with no performance or a disguised Nvidia nuclear reactor. With this, I can keep cool temperatures while also enjoying far better performance than even a T61p board could've offered.

You're going to want to know if the dock supports enough power throughput and additional inputs required for larger cards. From the look of that pic, it doesn't seem like it would be.
>>
>>54385236
So a 750 ti will be too much?
>>
>>54385265
I wouldn't know, that's the problem. not the guy with the dock.
>>
>>54385217
I think most AAA console ports are a bit too CPU-demanding to run on an old laptop Core 2 Duo. You'd get better results on a newer Thinkpad with an Expresscard setup using any GPU you want. The setup for that is just less elegant, since the GPU just kind of hangs out in the open with wires going all over the place and you need to provide your own PSU. The Advanced Dock might not perform as well, but all I have to do is drop my T601F in the dock and I'm ready to play vidya, then when I'm done I hit the eject button and take the laptop out.

The Advanced Dock only works with Thinkpads up to the T400 generation, so if you buy it and you have a T420 or whatever you'll have spent ~$100 on a paperweight. However, if you have an eligible Thinkpad, the GPU restrictions are 50W max TDP and a very tight space limitation. I couldn't even go up one step to an R7 250 because they're too big, even though its TDP is low enough to work. The card can't be longer than maybe an inch past the end of the PCI-E connector, and the cooler has to be short and flush.

How much would you guys pay in the UK for a new old stock (sealed box) T60?

Also how usable will one of these be for basic computing (web-browsing, 720p video, etc)?
>>

Can't comment on pricing in the UK, but here in the US I ordered one on eBay for ~$65.

Great for browsing the web, can handle 720p but you can't really push it past that. You'll want to make sure you put a liunx distro of your choosing on it though.

You could plug it into an external monitor and see if it blinks off after a while like the built-in screen does. If it doesn't, there's a good chance it's not the mobo.

I'd buy the other for =<$10 if the screen works just to see if I could rob Peter to pay Paul. The problem with the one you've got now may just be the screen inverter board. That's the more likely issue.

Since the X240 it has been redesigned as an ultrabook and has taken a considerable loss in performance.

Even if the processor is 'better' the heatsink isn't as robust as older machine, though you will obtain more battery life and efficiency.

There's two i7's for the X260 and one for the X230... the top end X230 can beat processor performance than the 2nd best i7 on the X260, and this is three generations later.

Since haslel, Intel hasn't churned much for the tick/tock method of the past.

Also I think the X260 has single channel memory, instead of dual channel

It's all speculative, I don't know real world performance of X260's graphics processing compared to the X230's...
HOWEVER, the T440p could not game as I expected it to while the T430 gamed a lot better... using an inferior CPU.
