What is the point of Virtualbox when KVM+QEMU blows it out of the water on all fronts?
>faster network I/O
>faster disk I/O
>faster CPU performance, both single-thread and multi-thread worloads
>less emulation overhead thanks to the bajillions of VirtIO drivers
>built right into the Linux kernel instead of some Oracle kernel module
>can even pass through an entire GPU for native gaming or hashing needs
Seriously what's the point of Virtualbox even exiting?

*existing
So how is it to set up? VB has a fancy gui so it's got to have one too if casuals will use it.
>>54373733
VB is ez as fuck. I remember trying to install QEMU a while ago and after 10 minutes just decided to install VirtualBox.
>>54373786
dis
virtualbox is easier for non-autistic folk
>>54373771
>VB has a fancy gui
KVM/QEMU has one too. It's called Virt-Manager.
And if you want extra noobiness there's also Gnome Boxes.
>>54373819
it just wurks
>>54373733
kvm requires some systemd horse shit on debian
the fuck??
Go into VBox settings. Select emulation method. Set as KVM. Done.
>>54373733
You forgot
>doesn't randomly segfault the kernel
The virtualbox kernel modules are ridiculously bad.
>>54373984
Your fault for not using Gentoo, senpai.
>>54374009
i dont want rolling release
>>54373771
>>54373786
If you're literally too dumb for virt-manager (AKA RedHat / GNOME-style dumbed down software) then you deserve to be stacking boxes in transylvania.
>>54373999
...you do know that's only what VBox exposes itself as to the guest for a little bit of timer paravirt improvement, right?
>>54373733
Works on Windows :3
>>54374021
Then stop complaining about your enterprise distros being enterprise.
>>54374025
>using Windows as host OS
Why would anyone do that.
>>54374043
Why not? :3
>>54374043
>Why would anyone do that.
It's easier to run Linux programs on Windows than to run Windows programs on Linux.
>>54374077
Only because of the way windows programs are designed. It's not a flaw with linux.
>>54373733
doesn't pass usb imaging devices like scanners correctly but then virtualbox has the same problem so using vmware.
>>54373733
But I want to _virtualize_ leenox, not _use_ leenox, silly.
>>54375043
>>54374077
>letting windows touch your hardware
gross
You cant use qemu for lfs
>>54373733
>Seriously what's the point of Virtualbox even exiting?
-some level of GPU acceleration on platforms where you cannot PCI-E forward
-hassle-free configuration compared to qemu OOB
>>54375499
+ 1 click to export a single file that contains the disk image AND the configuration, that works unmodified on several operating systems
>>54374022
>If you're literally too dumb for virt-manager (AKA RedHat / GNOME-style dumbed down software) then you deserve to be stacking boxes in transylvania.
OR…
You maybe just have other priorities?
Not wanting to use complicated software != being stupid
And last time I checked, Qemu was way more work to get stuff running than virtualbox. And I need to be working on my PhD, and not on some random linux internals.
>>54375923
>Qemu was way more work to get stuff running than virtualbox.
Last time I checked, it's the other way around.
But whatever.
