>falling for the retina meme

Want to get a Macbook without spending a fortune? Let me teach you Apple's dirty little secret. Go to eBay and get yourself one of the Mid-2012 models for less than half the price of a Retina model. Afterwards, buy a 250GB SSD and 16GB RAM, and optionally a caddy and a 1TB HDD to replace the SuperDrive if you don't need optical drive functionality.

Altogether, for around half the price of a comparably specced Retina Macbook Pro, you'll get close to the same performance, and tons more storage if you replace the SuperDrive with another HDD. All you're missing out on is the Retina display and a bit more battery life, while retaining the ability to upgrade and replace core components of your Macbook.

Yes, the Retina display is the best thing about the rMBPs. Too bad it comes saddled with a much higher price tag, no upgradeability, and close to no user maintenance.

How can you shill the Apple meme this hardware when used Chromebook pixels with top of the line specs for 2013 and ""retina"" tier screen for less than $400???

Literally ships with modified gentoo on it and you have the freedom to put other freedom respecting software on it
>>
>>54371346
Only if you are poor :^)
>>
>>54371278
Or you could just get a used Ivy Bridge Business laptop for $300. They will be much better than a piece of shit $600 Mac that still doesn't come close in repairability and input devices.

Why would I want a worse screen? Fuck off you idiot.

Want to get a Macbook without spending a fortune? Let me teach you Apple's dirty little secret. Go to eBay and get yourself one of the T420 models for less than 1/6 the price of a Retina model. Afterwards, buy a 250GB SSD and 16GB RAM, and optionally a caddy and a 1TB HDD to replace the SuperDrive if you don't need optical drive functionality.

Altogether, for around 1/4 the price of a comparably specced Retina Macbook Pro, you'll get faster performance, and tons more storage if you add an Ultrabay HDD adapter another HDD. All you're missing out on is the Meme display and a bit more battery life, while retaining the ability to upgrade and replace core components of your laptop.

Non-retina MacBook Pro 2012 owner here. Don't do this, literally don't, unless you want to screw up your eyes.

The machine was fine (and in fact - still IS fine), but ever since Yosemite, Non-Retina users got cucked hard by Apple. The font rendering is shit and so is the actual font used. See pic related. You can install Windows in Bootcamp and it will unironically look better.
The non-retina MBPs (especially the 13" models) have amongst the lowest ppi of all Apple screens, the MBA is slightly better and the rMBP obviously is tons better, and Apple seemed to do everything in their power to optimize their OS for high ppi screens.

Yes, you can upgrade, but WHAT can you actually upgrade? Your RAM, your battery and your SSD/HDD. Big fucking deal. Sure, Apple fucks you hard in the ass with their $200 for 8GB of RAM, but now that you're already spending so much on a machine, most people don't care anymore anyway.

I'm going to wait for this year's WWDC and either upgrade to a new 2016 rMBP if they have decent offers, i.e. they either put 16GB of RAM and/or a 256GB SSD in the fucking base model, make the bezels slimmer and for the love of everything that's holy, NOT make it even thinner, but ideally put a bigger battery in the fucking thing.
If not, I'm going to ditch the MacBook circlejerk and get a L460 or maybe even an XPS or something.

I bought it in 2012 about half a year before the fuckers announced the 13" retina model.

Cheap cunts.

But it has still served me well, though I spend most of my time in Linux VMs by now.

If it helps, there's an app that reverts the font back to Lucida Grande, which is what OSX used for every version of OSX before Yosemite. It has some bugs, particularly with Safari when opening many tabs, but overall it helps improve readability a ton on Yosemite and El Capitan.
>>
>>54372001
Neat but why'd you link it to me?
>>
>>54372031
Can confirm, mid12 2.9ghz mbp user here with the same config. Works like a charm.
>>
>>54371278
uh, dude, the retina display should be the standard for all laptops. it's really nice.
>>
>>54372065
I know of that but I refuse to install a cheap hack to make a computer that once had cost me $1500 readable.

I would accept it, if I ran Linux or did this by myself, but I clearly paid a massive premium for an Operating System that has been made to work and look good by default, only it fails at this right now.
This is what I'd call a subtle form of fraud. Scam. Deception. Whatever you want to call it.

I know I'm playing the devils advocate here since I will PROBABLY buy another MacBook, but I just hope that the Retina-upgrade was a one of a kind step and machines bought now will be usable through operating system updates past 2 years.

Although if they really go full retard with the new MBP like they did with the 12" Macbook, then I'm going to jump ship immediately, but I doubt they will. They know their userbase pretty well after all.

upgrading once when you buy it makes sense. Laptops rise in price with spec really effing fast. I got my laptop, added an SSD on sale from black friday, and slapped in some RAM I had lying around into the unused slot

yeah buying a Macbook Pro in the first half of 2012 was probably the stupidest thing you could do
>>
>>54371278
The 2012 mabckbook pros incinerate themselves. It's so bad they have a free recall service for 2011 and 2012 mbps that stop working for onboard graphics issues.

I've had my 2012 i7 mbp have the mainbord replaced 3 times because the gpu bathes itself in fire.

If you buy one secondhand they won't repair it for free and you're out the cost of an mbp mainbord in the realm of hundreds of dollars
