5GHz can be faster if you're in an area with a bunch of other 2.4GHz networks or other interference, but has shorter range and is more affected by obstructions between your phone and the AP such as walls/floors.

Yeah I used to use 5ghz before ac dropped. I used the muRata chip in the note 3/4 and a dir-355 extreme dual-band.
It was okay. Shorter effective range but hella faster local transfers. I would definitely use it for a wireless NAS and preferred 5ghz for gaming.
No point now though unless you're broke, go ac.
