Where ?

>put arch
>for university

What are you? An environmental science major? Only university students with enough time to run arch.

i'm in computer science but i'm thinking of switching to either electrical engineering, aerospace, or physics. engineering seems to be the way to go for money but i love the physics courseload.

Get a windows laptop. With CATIA, AutoCAD and Mathlab you are going to need it.
>>
>>54352681
how does solidworks compare to autocad?
>>
>>54352695

Never tried solidwork. Only had one technical drawing class in my Software Engineering curriculum as an optional course.

The class was given on CATIA and AutoCAD.
>>
>>54352681
Aye. Give up on the meme OS if you value your education. Engineers live in windows with proprietary software galore.
>>
>>54352567
Eh. I fell for the Chromebook meme. No DVD/Bluray support, minimal storage, can't download software of any kind aside from extensions.

It is a sexy beast though. If all you do is use the web and Google services it's fine, or would be good for a 2nd laptop.
>>
>>54352789
i was planning to do thesis papers and shit when i'm just chilling in a library or office. i thought it looked nice. its like a crossbreed of a thinkpads aspect ratio and a macbooks aluminum frame. almost like /g/ uniting.
>>
Using a chromebook right now (HP 14) running arch.
It's badass. I love the damn thing. Great university laptop.
Can also run any distro just as well as arch, so if that's not your cup of tea, try anything else.

So was OP just spouting shit then? I can't find proof anywhere of a chromebook pixel going for $300
>>
>>54353120
The worst part is it doesn't even come with a desktop windows OS. Instead it comes with a butchered linux distro filled to the brim with spyware (chrome os). Base model also only has 32GB of storage space with like 20gb for you to use. Good luck fitting more than your music library on that piece of shit.

Only a complete retard would even consider buying this.
>>
>>54353190
The Chromebook Pixel comes with 64GB storage.

Still shit, but better than 32GB
>>
>>54353182
It's not the 32GB internal storage + 4GB RAM variant is like $400 or more USED. I think google has given up on their own product.
>>
>>54353224
Problem is the 64GB chromebook pixep is $1,000+ USED. You would have to be brain damaged to get one.
>>
Im surprised no one has accused this thing of having low storage space just so the user would be more inclined to use google drive and possibly pay for a larger cloud space.
>>
>>54353345
We're all already aware of that. It's like accusing water of being wet.
>>
>>54353190
Shut up, faggot. Get a flash drive or an ext. HDD, like any other person.
And if you're expecting to do high performance tasks, why are you buying machines that are this cheap in the first place?
>>
>>54352681
>ece
>using windows
>can't even spell MATLAB

pretty much all decent commercial EDA software runs on Linux, save for PCB design and some small point tools which are multi-platform

try doing IC design on Windows....not gonna happen

you're talking out of your ass

>Shut up, faggot. Get a flash drive or an ext. HDD, like any other person.
drink bleach

>And if you're expecting to do high performance tasks, why are you buying machines that are this cheap in the first place?
Except it's bot cheap, at all. Cheapest 32gb internal + 4gb ram version is like $400 used or new from shady places. Google basically has given up on chromebooks.

BUT 1TB OF CLOUD STORAGE SPACE
>>
>>54353445
I don't use chromebook devices, what's your point?
>>
>>54353461
The cloud is a meme and a huge invasion of privacy. Local storage will always be better. SSDs are getting cheaper as time goes on. Hell we should see 1TB SSDs for ~$100 soon.
>>
>>54353190
>music library
>20gb

yea right what do you listen to 1 fucking band?
>>
>>54353547
I don't think people have more than 20GB of music m8. 20GB is actually a lot desu. You can fit about 2,000 10MB MP3 songs there.
>>
>>54352681
>mathlab
triggered
it's MATLAB dummy
>>

I have nearly 75Gb. /mu/ has massive libraries too.

"I bought this refrigerator but all it does is make things colder why won't it do anything else"

Theres a reason why it's called "Chromebook" and not "fully functional windows laptop"
>>
>>54353653
SD card is more than fast enough for even your placebo FLAC.
>>
>>54353697
I thought the chromebook pixel had no microsd slot?
>>
>>54353724
Everywhere I'm looking says it has a straight up SD slot
>>
>>54353695
Your analogy fails because a standard fridge is actually useful and a laptop that urges you to rely on other people's servers (so they can monetize your data and usage patterns) is not, especially if it sells for just as much as its mid-range counterparts

>BUT IT LOOKS GUD
>-technophobe retards
>>
>>54353622
I have like 100GB, and most of it isn't even FLAC.
>>
>>54353622
shut the fuck up kid I have over 200GB of fucking music I shuffle all day every day and it's fucking mp3, not even flac.

>I listen to 1 fucking band I'm so musically experienced
fuck off
>>
Pixel or rMBP?
Linux on Pixel if I get it. I'm currently using a 16gb Chromebook already so I'm okay with the disk space. MBP's ssd is way faster, though.

Would I be able to install Ubuntu and sublimetext on this thing?

>>
>>54353190
32GB isn't too bad. I used a laptop with a 16GB SSD and no SD card with Windows 8 on it and no additional storage for over a year
>>
>>54353871
not even a mac fan but between those 2 I'd go with a rMBP
>>
>>54352567
That's how much it should cost in the first place.

>>54353190
>desktop windows OS. Instead it comes with a butchered linux distro filled to the brim with spyware
Wat.

>>54353622
There are terabytes of free and different music, why the fuck would you limit yourself to couple songs?
>>
>>54354336
Yes, you can flash your BIOS with SeaBIOS and then install Ubuntu on it. I installed an Xubuntu mini install on my 16GB chromebook and have around 10GiB~ free after installing all my preferred software. Xfce is very minimal so Xubuntu is nice when you got limited disk space.
>>
>>54352695
SolidWorks is much more focused on Mech eng and in my opinion, way more convenient for mech eng stuff.
AutoCAD doesn't really have a mech point of view and focuses on drawing, SolidWorks knows much more about e.g. drilling holes with standard clearances and stuff.
>>
>>54356943

This. AutoCAD is only concerned with very basic detailing information. It's primary purpose is to be a software for building contractors. Autodesk used to have a software called Inventor that was a direct competitor to Solidworks. It was much more engineer oriented. The last version they shipped was in 2012 though and I could never get it to work with Windows 10. So your best bet will probably be Solidworks if you're looking to make detailed models of individual objects with actual specifications and shit.
>>
>>54353833
what
>>
>>54353434
no it's not i'm OP and i found it for like 250 with scratches, 300 perfectly fine. 32GB is enough for me since i'd be saving documents to a jump drive or server. it's just a big typewriter for code and thesis papers.
>>
>>54352567
>Good hardware with utterly gimped, useless OS doesn't stay up in price once consumers realize it's a waste of money

What a surprise.
>>
>>54357170
can't you just put another OS on it?
>>
Expansys has the original Pixel for $399 while supplies last, that's the lowest I've heard of.
>>
>>54352567
The first gen fucking sucked
Be a man and shill out $999 for the new one
>>
>>54356987

The fuck? Inventor 2017 was just released.

>>
>>54352567
I don't see anythimg cheaper than 399 on ebay

link?
>>
I feel like they should have found a spot to put at least an m.2 ssd, would have bought one if it weren't for it's trash storage options. But google WANTS you to use their cloud.
