underrated answer
If anybody cared about only using the most well-designed operating system of a given time period, they would probably be using some variant of Microsoft Research's Barrelfish OS for cluster purposes, or Singularity OS for security purposes.
UNIX and UNIX-based OSes like Linux would have been abolished by 2000. NT would be a fragile wonder.
Instead we have all of these architecture designs that are stuck in the 70's when UNIX was actually good, for the singular reason that it's too difficult to convince people to write software for a better platform.
Windows will die when x86 dies, but UNIX will be forever.

The one thing keeping emacs from being a decent operating system is a decent text editor.

man its weird, like he has one half of his mind as a decently competent computer engineer, and the other half is just there to throw a layer of crazy on top.
