What are some good 60% sized wrist rests?
>>
I'm on the verge of buying a first mechanical keyboard now (probably a pok3r due to me needing ISO layout and I want a 60%), however I'm not sure what Cherry MX type to get. I'm mainly going to be programming with it, so after research I'm probably thinking blues or clears? To specify what I have gone through: A Logitech G15, and now I have a Apple Keyboard (don't hurt me please).

My question is simply this: Is it worth getting a switch sampler to ensure I make the right purchase, or are samplers a scam to lure indecisive dumbasses like myself to buy overly expensive plastic?

The B.Face I bought used came in today. I only had enough time to put on my light gray/white Gateron caps before I had to leave, but damn, not only are Gateron Yellows *really* nice, but the previous owner did a good job of lubing the Cherry stabs, no rattling. Also RGB under lighting is the best thing ever desu.

Will post pics later when I get home.

Well with the pcb you could use something like kicad to design it yourself and then print it, or you could find a pcb drawn up for you already. You could find someone to print the pcb for you. It would be easier if you just salvaged the pcbs from old keyboards instead.
Here's an article that could possibly help.

Just go to a store that has mechanical keyboards on display so you can try them out. Or buy a test kit on ebay or something that has one of each key. There is no key that's best for something specific. It all comes down to personal preference.
>>
>>54346800
I don't. I just prefer my model m.
>>
>>54350795

I personally like orange ALPS and MX Green for programming. MX Clears are a nice compromise if you want quieter switches.

Buckling spring Model Fs are my favorite switch, but they feel somewhat inexact for programming purposes.

I'm looking to buy my first mechanical keyboard specifically for programming. I want something In the style of the keyboard in the pic but I want it with buckling spring switches. Unicomp seems to be the only place that sells keyboards with them but not in that minimalist style I want. Plus I want to be able to customize it freely. Which switch would be a good alternative to the buckling springs? I really want to be able to feel and hear the keys when I press them.

Pick a switch yourself, it's hard to say that one it objectively better. Here's a chart for Cherry switches - the most common switch brand.
If you can, try some display units to get a reference point and move around the chart to adjust for your tastes (stiffer? noise? tactility?).

Once you've done that, browse around and see what sizes and designs you like. You're likely to bump into the really big brands:
Razer - Very tacky gamer aesthetic, overpriced plastic feeling boards, uses knockoff switches that aren't nice to type on, hard to customize beyond lighting color.
Corsair - More solid but often overpriced, standard Cherry switches, looks decent, hard to customize beyond lighting color.
Cooler Master (CM Storm) - Very standard looking boards with standard Cherry switches, detachable cables and standard keycap sizes making them easily customizable.
Logitech - Uses their own switch type, very extreme aesthetic, absolutely no customization beyond lighting.

Beyond that there are a ton more brands like Filco (very professional), Ducky (nice backlits), Rosewill, KBParadise (online budget brands) etc.

There are of course other switch types but I'd avoid them for a first purchase.

Also, nice, it looks like you were the only one who got the board as advertised. My one has the light grey keys like >>54346990. I don't really mind too much, because as far as I'm concerned, a major reason to get a board with a standard layout like the VA68M is to be able to swap-out the keycaps.

It seems like it happened to most of the people in the drop. People who care a lot more about it than I do are already contacting support. My caps are probably just going to sit in a drawer forever once I replace them anyway.

yeah, you can avoid that by not ripping the pads out with the switch
if the switch doesn't wiggle a bit then it still has solder on it
if you don't get all of the solder out you can add more solder and try again

Bought a Cherry G80-3850 with MX Blues the other day. I don't think I like the MX blue switches. I don't quite understand why people claim that the blues are better for typing, I honestly don't think the feedback helps at all. I'm a programmer and type all day and I still prefer black switches.

To me MX Blacks are like driving with a sports car on smooth German Autobahn asphalt while MX Blues feel all bumpy and loud like tumbling down a hill in a shitty Citroen.

Also, what do you guys think about the Ultimate Hacking Keyboard?

Yeah, same. I love the fact that you can save your Macros and shit but also take them somewhere and still have them. It's saved in the keyboard itself.

Also seen it with blank caps, looked so sexy. and last but not least, I can't find ergonomic mechanical keyboards that aren't all too crazy. I tried the Truly Ergonomic Keyboard but didn't like it, at all.

On the note of blacks, how are they for typing on all day?

I've got thirtyfive gram linears in my keyboard and now I'm scared to use the gateron blacks I have for anything because of how heavy they feel.
>>
>>54359642
Maybe I am weird but I really like on the blacks, they simply feel a lot smoother for me. Reds (or any other switches that need less force) are fine too but can feel a bit mushy after long periods of typing. But if I had to pick, I'd take any linear switches over any clicky ones when typing.

Also, I think I am faster on the blacks, because I don't have to go through the "bumps" of the clicky switches. I rarely bottom out.

By the way, does anyone know about the brand in pic related? Friend of mine bought one of those "Falcon z77" with MX blues (or pretty decent knock-offs as far as I could tell) for like $52.

Lexmark might've used slightly thinner casing, but aside from the black caps being pad printed they're pretty much the same. My Maxi Switch M13 is one of the best IBMs to type on outside of an F. It's definitely a bullshit idea.

On another note, got a few more school board space savers. One of them's hillariously borked.
Here's the carnage, bout to get a frame from Unicomp and boltmod em up.
>>
>>54350795
there's no such thing as "gaming", "typing", or "programming" switches. Just pick whatever you like. I type 150 wpm easily with my laptop keyboard or my filco w/ brown switches even though they're not "typing" switches. I type the same with my novatouch (topre). I know a guy who types 180 wpm and uses only his laptop keyboard. A new switch won't make you type faster, trust me. Once you get used to it, it's all the same crap.

Just buy whatever you like. No such thing as "a best keyboard for this".

Its simple really, if you want the best there is, get buckling springs, if you want something other than full sized, get blues, if you want something quite, get browns, if you want memes, get red/blacks.

In all seriousness, the difference between two different types of switch is not that big. If you think that you will like it, you probably will, and if you are torn, then they both are probably about as good, switch choice does not matter that much.

Really,i got tired of buying keyboards because of minor imperfections, so I just built my own. Currently selling off my other ones.

Anyone here know when cm will make the masterkeys available with mx blues? I really like the simple build with rgb leds thing plus i fucking love that one effect that responds to your music (forgot what its called)

You will get a buckling spring keyboard and you will like it.

If everyone just tried out switches then bought a custom alu case, a base PCB for their chosen switch type, keycaps, and switches we would all save a lot of money, huh?

If everyone bought that stuff prices would go down, so yeah, people would save a whole lot of money.

Though I'm curious to see how much it'd cost if you design the PCB, plate and case from scratch.

I had a switch tester before I bought my first one. I was torn between reds and blacks, and I got a red keyboard. It was way too light, and not satisfying. And then I thought I'd like greens, so I got one, and that clickiness really got on my nerves.
Then I got a poker with clears, and it was pretty good, but I hated it wasn't fully programmable, and it didn't have an f row.

So I built my own.

Get a scrap plate, hand wire, and make a case.

I've already done similar stuff to that twice. I've got plans to make a split keyboard with RGB underlighting and a proper PCB and case and everything.

Though it'll still be a while until I have the pleasure to find out how much such fun costs.

i think you said it before but how much did it cost you?

PCBs are expensive. You'll end up spending $50+ each. You should attempt to run a group buy to help out other people interested too. I'm more interested in vintage stuff so I hack apart things already made and mash em together. I don't really have interest in cherry style switches. The cherry stuff I buy I just get in on group buys for things I want though even the little interest I had in cherry has wandered off to gaterons.
