Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Why would a file manager need an audio backend/server? Holy shit, that's ridiculous.

I'm new at Linux, messing around with OBS and seeing if my machine can stream. I try to do screen capture so I can play aot webgame full screen, but what happens on the stream is on and off flickering between the full screen and the desktop.
Is this a simple fix? Also I heard there is another capture option called monitor capture, but I don't have that. Should I?

If I've only got 2GB of RAM in the box, is it gunna shit its pants from running samba and a gui for netflix?

Following that question, is there a good cellphone-to-computer interface for linux? I use remotemouse (or used to) for my windows box so i wouldnt have to get out of bed to navigate videos, but that doesn't appear to exist for linux.

It depends on what you want to run. Simple stuff like normal Games and Photokek will work in WINE. With some tinkering you can also get some AAA games running in it. There is WineHQ where you can check if a AAA game works good or not and how to make it running. For everything else you need PCI passthrough, which isn't very easy for beginners, but if you have enough time to set everything up, you can have a full working Windows-Gaming-Console VM in GNU/Linux.

God damn it, guys. I am at my wit's end with this conky configuration. It just won't show up on my desktop.

When I manually kill everything conky related, then run
conky -c ~/.conkyrc
I don't get any errors. I might see it flash at the top left of the desktop (which is wrong, it should be top right), but then it disappears. htop shows it running, but it isn't visible.

Here's the first part of my conky config:
alignment top_right

own_window yes
own_window_type desktop
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_hints undecorated,below,skip_taskbar,skip_pager,sticky

minimum_size 240 400
gap_x 10

So I'm trying to install tightvnc on raspbian but every time I do that it breaks the login screen and I can no longer get access into my pi and have to reformat the microsd

Is there another distro I could use for it or is this some sort of bug present in tightvnc for every distro?

See? That's what's so frustrating. A nearly identical version works fine on my desktop, but when I try it on my laptop (a T420s) it doesn't. It actually did work fine before, then I did an upgrade and it stopped. I have no clue what broke. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling conky, but it didn't help.

Thanks for trying, though. If anyone else happens by this and has a suggestion that would be appreciated.

You know, I sort of tried that approach, but in reverse. I commented out almost all of the text except for the kernel and uptime section, then started commenting out seemingly relevant settings at the top. Nothing made a difference.

Alright. I commented everything out except the kernel and uptime. This is the error I get:
Conky: desktop window (c00015) is subwindow of root window (bf)
Conky: drawing to desktop window
Conky: drawing to single buffer
Conky: can't load font '6x10'
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 55 (X_CreateGC)

If I enable the two xft font settings that gets rid of the 'can't load font' error, but the rest is essentially the same.

Enabling 'own_window yes' and 'background yes' gets rid of the above error, and it seems to run, but nothing appears. I go down the list of command options, enabling each in turn and nothing makes it appear.

Pretty sure drawing to the framebuffer is just a memcpy, so no it doesn't support transparency. But if you read the frambuffer first and composited the final image yourself in userspace you could maybe do it. You can have a look at the w3mimagedisplay source from eg git://anonscm.debian.org/collab-maint/w3m.git
Although looking in /usr/include/linux/fb.h it says stuff about 32bit pixels with a transp bitfield on the end. Not sure if it is used though.

Aight, so I'm using an AMD GPU not compatible with these new AMDGPU drivers with both open source and proprietary drivers.

I can manage, for instance, to get XFCE working with vsync or use compton instead, both get rid of tearing on most applications, except Chromium. My only current way to enjoy tearing free Chromium is if I use proprietary drivers which are worse in terms of performance from what I've seen.

My question is, why is it that vsync works just "partially"? As in, nothing has tearing except Chromium? I seem to recall windows forcing vsync on anything windowed if it was enabled on the desktop

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>54354262
Use a virtual machine. You should do it this way first anyway to test different distros/de's so you don't get stuck with something you don't like.

Well there was wubi for ubuntu but it says it doesn't work fow win8/10: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide
If you can resize the system partition you can make a new partition there and put a linux install on it by eg installing to a VM then copying stuff to the parttion with ext2read then use eg easybcd to boot into that from a chainloaded bootloader.

Actually it looks like you can boot into an ISO from EasyBCD so maybe just try that. You presumably wont be able to overwrite the whole disk (that has the ISO on it) so you will have to have enough free space on the disk to create a new partition at the end for linux.

Linus started one kernel that probably won't be used anymore in ~25 years. Rms (not him alone though) started a movement and a license that benefits the whole community for as long as software licenses and copyright will exist. The idea of copyleft alone is worth more than one single monolithic kernel could ever be.

>NO GPU, NO CPU: APU!
>AMD E-240
>wrong screen resolution, adding one by means of Xrandr fucks everything if selected
>checked 'additional drivers', not even one listed there
>I chose 'no proprietary software' when installing
>Ubuntu 16.04 abandoned the first proprietary graphic drivers of AMD, chose new open-source ones still being developed and released
>don't know if AMD will release drivers for my model, that has at least 6 years
So, what do you think?

What?
More like this
sudo apt-get install --reinstall software-center

Or did Ubuntu changed its package manager?

I'm pretty sure that "-get" isn't necessary anymore. But for the other differences you pointed, I don't know, I'm noob.

Yes.
>>
>>54360875
could you be so kind and give me us a device name? or better: a name of the chip it uses.
mouses that don't work with a generic driver are pretty rare.

Fuck, the new software center (the one having problem) does not works, and what was installed by using this command is the old shitty software center that was dropped in this version of Ubuntu. This one does not opens simply because it was always shitty.
>>
>>54361253
run it from a terminal and post the output here
>>
>>54361605
I uninstalled both software center, then installed again
gnome-software
. Before, and after, I get the message that /usr/lib/gs-plugins-9/libgs_plugin_xdg_app_reviews.so is missing, so the software center does not works!
>>
>>54361636
Post the full output, preferably with code tags

Why do most Linux distributions have such shit video performance in Virtualbox?
>>
>>54361705
I searched and found a news article of day 25 of last month saying the new software center has a bug about .deb packages.
>>
>>54361865
Because you are using a VM.
>>
>>54361875
That's funny, I found lots of results. Perhaps there are not many portuguese speakers suffering from the bug.

A VM doesn't use the powers of you graphic card, because, well, it's a VM.

>>54361910
It's called linux
>>
>>54358627

It has been deprecated in favour for GNOME software center.

It takes like 5 seconds to learn how to use the controls. Arrow keys work as expected and [Enter] opens a file. It also has image previews. What's so hard about that?
>>
>>54361907
I found no results in English. Maybe I used the wrong keywords...
