Is Node.js good to learn for a front end beginner? If not, what would you recommend instead?
It's modern and the fastest growing ecosystem, there is nothing else you should begin with!

Ask in /wdg/, but personally, I quite like it. Not sure how relevant it is to the front end, but its a good skill to have.

Sorry, meant to write back end, not front end.
I'm just looking for other people's opinions as I am torn between node and PHP.

Yeah, it's pretty good. Don't know why you'd ask /g/ of all places though.

If you already know some JS, node is a good choice because you should pick it up faster. PHP is a bit of a mess desu, however PHP is much more commonly used in backend so if you intend to get a job consider learning that.
In terms of the specifics of each language, they're very different. JS is a functional language whereas PHP is procedural. Without getting into specifics, the difference is that PHP runs one line at a time, node runs asynchronously - they require different approaches! You can technically use either for any task, but each is better for certain tasks than the other.
That being said, why not have a play with both? There are lots of resources available - see which tickles your fancy early.

sure, you can also use node for front-end stuff trough webpack, browserify, etc.
