I just bought D-LINK DWA-548 wireless adapter for my Desktop PC and installed it. Advertises up to 300mbps speed. My ISP provided speed is up to 100mbps. Ran a few speedtests:
On Wi-Fi - http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/5295276755

Seems like i am maxing out my possible bandwidth on cable but not on wifi. Can i achieve same results on wifi as on cable? Or am i missing something? I installed drivers from the manufacturer site.
bamp any help appreciated. Tried on my laptop and it is pushing 5MBs steady both on download and on upload

Also this screen pops up in the middle of installing drivers. I dont have a cd-rom, can this be an issue?
Installation completes fine though after clicking Next and there is Wireless Connection Manager icon on desktop but after clicking on it, does nothing, no response, doesnt open up. Something is not right here?

Yeah get the model off the Wi-Fi router. To maximize speed, you'll need a Wireless-N or Wireless-AC Router.
Also, because your ISP (100 Mbps) is less than your Wi-Fi adapter (300 Mbps) - your ISP Is a bottleneck. You won't get internet speeds over 100 Mbps obviously.
You don't need a CD Drive to install Wi-Fi drivers. If your Desktop has no internet connectivity, get on a device that does and download the D-LINK DWA-548 drivers from the internet (Google) then put them on a USB drive, then install on your Desktop. They'll probably be a .exe setup wizard or something easy.

I'm guessing you have a Wireless-G router (54 Mbps) but could be wrong. If so, you're probably on the 2.4Ghz frequency which is the same as cordless phones, microwave and lots of other household items. It also depends how far your desktop is from router. That would explain why you're only getting half of the 54 Mbps

It depends. Do you have a lot of walls between your router and the device you want to connect to it? Higher frequencies have less range at the same amplitude. Walls only make it worse.
Ask your parents for permission to run a cable. You will NOT EVER get the full advertised speed from garbage consumer grade bullshit.
