He's too young. Post-docs are pretty much always given away to anyone, and they're very long-term positions (5-10 years usually). At the earliest, you can expect to get a PhD at 28. If he committed suicide after only 3 years of not finding a job he must not have tried very hard anyway. Just looking for investors in a startup and getting it off the ground after failing to find a job would have taken longer, let alone if he had found a job and had to quit for whatever reason.
Plus, paid internship are everywhere, be it in universities throughout the world or in industry. He could additionally have tried doing consulting. Or, if all else fails, he could've tried becoming a teacher.
If he'd tried any 2 activities, even if they both failed, he'd be at least 33-35 by the time he commits suicide, let alone if he tried everything.
