I'm going to college. Recommend me a laptop to use in class. Problem is that my budget is small: 350$ (or about 300 euros).

Just get a chromebook. Been working perfectly fine for me and you could install crouton if you need/want to do things the chromium os can't

If you don't want to get laughed out of uni get at least a MacBook, MacBook pro if you can. Trust me, there's nothing that gets eyes rolling more than some looser pulling out his Acer or lelnovo in class.

Chromebook 2 or used thinkpad x220 (if you need portability) or a used thinkpad t420

unfortunately both thinkpad models are probably out of warranty so if you have a hardware issue you cannot competently sort yourself or is irreplaceable without very specific parts then you're screwed

Get a chromebook. They are the best in that price. Fast and the new ones are so good.

I'd hope that someone's uni wasn't filled with characters from the cast of Mean Girls

Are you retarded? Why should other students give two shits about your laptop choice? Even if it's an xXx_Gamer_xXx laptop, no one should care, or at least you shouldn't.

Stop being a normie.

Keep in mind you will rarely use a notebook in a class. Mostly pen and paper will be better, unless you can replace the easy of use and versatility of both completely. For that use case you will need something different. Like those pens and an accompanying tablet (???).
However for general use buy something mid-range, so you can use CAD/Matlab, etc. and do some recreational gaming.

Try with the newest (2009/2010) white MacBooks like pic related. They can be upgraded all the way to the newest OS X, batteries may still have juice in them, and for that price they're gonna be basically in mint condition.
For €300 you might get a decent MacBook Air or even a MacBook Pro but as always check that the batteries are still working and overall chasis dents, those are always telltale signs of its owner.

OP, i am in the exact situation as you, and I bought an Asus laptop from the X540L series. They are really good, amazing specs for their price (not suitable for >muh games, but you can do all the productive work on this bad boy like on no other budget laptop).

Stays cold (without lagging) even when I open and work simultaneously in FL Studio, Unity, Microsoft Visual Studio and VideoPad (I know I am being very specific here, but I wanted to give a real example).

The battery is amazing, it easily lasts 7 hours at uni.

This thing is also the most lightweight laptop with 15.6". 1,9 kg. is a dream come true.

TLDR: ASUS X540L masterrace

I recently bought a Thinkpad T420, HP Elitebook 8470p, and a Lenovo G50 off newegg. Can't remember the T420 price exactly, but it was $200-$250. The Elitebook was $230 and the G50 was $265.

This is all subjective, since you can look up the specs yourself, but here we go:

Overall, I like the Elitebook the best. I like the way it looks compared to the T420, but is thicker than the G50. The G50 is the thinnest, but it is bigger than both (and the biggest 15.6" laptop I've used). 14" is the perfect screen size for me.

The T420 gave me no problems with Linux (Debian). I had some hiccups with Linux on the Elitebook, but they were insignificant enough for me to forget them. The G50 came with Win10, and is staying that way. I like to play with all OS's. (I hate Win10)

The G50 runs games (games in this context are older or not too demanding) better than the others, but that is to be expected. They all have 8GB RAM, but, for gaming, the A8 APU on the G50 is better than the i5 on the others.

Battery life wasn't a concern for me, but they all have ~3.5 hours of life. Although I haven't measured this other than eyeballing the clock.

The Elitebook and T420 have Win7+debian on SSDs, so they boot faster than Win10 on the HDD. I've only run a side-by-side test once though.

For what it's worth, I gave the T420 to my roommate and the G50 to my gf since I like the Elitebook.
