You upgrade from Win 7/8/8.1, Windows 10 is not free, only the upgrade from Win 7/8/8.1 is free.
Meaning your 7/8/8.1 key will become a Windows 10 key and will be tied to your motherboard.

Step 1: Download the Windows 10 ISO image from Microsoft’s web site. Alternatively you can download the web installer from the same page and just choose to upgrade your PC, which is the easiest option.
Step 2: If you are installing on a regular PC with Windows already on it, you’ll be prompted immediately to start the upgrade process. Alternatively, you can burn it to an optical disk or create a bootable USB flash drive. My computer came with windows 8.1.
I'm certain of this because I still have the brochures.
It had a nice big hd so I just left windows on it and installed linux dual boot.
I boot windows every month or two to run windows update, and noticed recently I have windows 10.
This happened all by itself, so I can't see how it could be difficult. You know, like ifyou actually wanted windows 10.
