HP EliteBook 745 G3?
- has an option to get it with FreeDOS and save $180 by not buying winblows
- no removable battery

All modern laptops have planned obsolesence?

What the hell do I buy if I want to have a laptop for longer than 2 years? Because spending $1500 on a new computer every 2 years is for Amerifags who don't mind being slaves to the jewish banks...

pic related, its what I'm using right now. Had it since 2009. Only replaced the battery three years ago for $80.

CPU powerf has more or less levelled out in laptops the only advancements are in battery life and temperature. You can buy a good condition t430 and it should last you 8 years (since when a part wears out you can replcae it yourself pretty cheap). You can even change the cpu because it's socketed. It will be unnoticeably different in performance to a 2016 laptop
>>
>>54330733
looks like you're looking for a professional business laptop, not a pro-sumer laptop. Look into the business dells, thinkpads, etc.
>>
>>54330733

All computers ever only last at most 2 years of being top of the line it's not just laptops.
>>
I like external batteries too, but from what I gather, your issue is that you can't replace them, which isn't true. You can find a disassembly video for most anything and it's not like they solder the batteries in.
>>
>>54330733
>HP EliteBook 745 G3?
>- has an option to get it with FreeDOS and save $180 by not buying winblows
Is this a joke? Do they actually have updated versions of DOS now days that supports newer hardware or are they seriously gimping a new laptop with an OS that can't support 64 bit processors, multi core processors, and tons of other common shit and only displays an 80x24 terminal in a god awful 24x45 font?

>>
>>54331421
>>54330733

why would you not buy a ssd and install it yourself?
>>
>>54331174
The point isn't about FreeDOS. The point is you can choose FreeDOS as an OS as opposed to winblows and then $180 is taken off the price of the laptop. So you can use that $180 to upgrade the CPU or RAM.
>>
>>54331421

>>

That's how it should be and how most people do it already. A laptop will always be much slower than a desktop, while not focusing on portability with laptops and power on desktops?

Gaymer laptops are a great example what happens when you try to combine it, you give up power AND mobility.
>>
>>54334705
Get the 1080p version then, even cheaper than the mac.

They use the same processor as the mac, for half the price, if you think osx will magically make the battery last longer doing the same work on the same browser on the same cpu then you're fucking deluded.
>>

Get a Latitude or ThinkPad with a Sandy Bridge i5. (ie i5-2520M)

Might not be as power efficient as today's CPUs, but the batteries on these machines are usually much larger so it equals out the battery life isn't too bad.

Intel HD 3000 is very lacking compared to modern integrated Intel GPUs, but who needs that extra GPU performance with a laptop?

>3 1/2 stars

Ruh-roh what's the problem??? Let's look at the reviews:

>The QHD would have been the ideal laptop for it's price, except that the touch screen doesn't work. I was happy at first but then realized that every other time my computer fell asleep, it would disable the touch screen. On top of that, 1 out of time times that the computer fell asleep, it required a full reboot to turn back on. I checked online and these problems apparently are common and have been happening all the way since mid December 2015. It's now two month's from then and Asus still hasn't fixed the problem. I wouldn't recommend this laptop to anyone until those two issues are fixed.

>I wanted to like this computer, I really did. It has a fairly large memory for a SSD computer, was smaller than a lot of laptops, and had a touchscreen, all things that I needed. Immediately the media driver began to malfunction and stop working repeatedly, it was extremely slow to connect to internet and often will not connect when my other devices have no problem. After about two days, I began to use it and all of the color radiated out from the upper left corner of the screen diagonally to the bottom of the screen. When I tried to make comments on Facebook, it would scramble and repeat my words, refuse to delete the errors that it made and was just very annoying. After a few minutes it became uncomfortably warm on my leg while on battery and VERY warm when plugged in.

>The battery life that was advertise was also a lie. You will only get 8 hours of battery life if you set it to battery saver mode, turn down to the lowest brightness, and don't touch it at all. I've just recently had this laptop for 1 day and I've already experiencing screen flickering and black screen. Another gripe I have is that the trackpad is not very responsive. Sometime it does not receive a input when you tap on it; most of the time I have to push down and click to get the input.

I guess you get what you pay for!

Non-removable batteries aren't much of an issue on HP, Apple and Asus computers, they can easily handle more than 1000 charge cycles with new Li-Polymer type batteries.
Dell and Lenovo ones you have to watch out for, they barely last more than 300, most likely because the chemistry is arranged is to give more Wh per kg rather than actual charge cycle durability.

Ah, yes, using another person's server is so modern. It's only WHAT HIGH CAPACITY LOCAL STORAGE SUPERSEDED BECAUSE NETWORKS ARE SLOWER, LESS RELIABLE, AND LESS SECURE, OR AT LEAST UP UNTIL COMPUTING WAS FLOODED WITH IDIOT CONSUMERS WHO BELIEVE EVERY MARKETING BUZZWORD SHOVED DOWN THEIR THROATS

I have a 7250 and 7440 and it's fine. The lower end like the 3000 and 5000 are questionable. They are expensive though.

I just bought a refurbed Asus with an i3 and put a cheap ssd in it. $300 with a full HD screen and TPM with Windows 10. Reboots in 2 seconds. Not for gaming or virtual machine stuff, but really great Facebook machine.

I don't know man. Though I might as well considering there isn't a single good lappy out there at a reasonable price.
It's either shit display, spyware or ass battery life. Been looking at getting a SP4 since a tablet mught break the cycle, is it good or just another over-shilled meme?

I always hear good things about Fujitsus but the problem I have with them is that they feel cheap. I feel that if I drop it on my bed it will break.

I was reading that the 1080p screen on the ThinkPads isn't as bright as the 1440p screen. But I'm only relying on the opinion of other people/reviewers.

Also, the T460s seems to be built from better materials than the T460? In both the T460 and the T460s case you're making a trade-off.

Looking at the Lenovo X1 now, and if you want to downgrade to Windows 7 you have to pay $30.

I mean, I won't even use Windows on it but that's absolutely ridiculous.

the xps13 battery is absolutely removable, it's just internal and requires you to pull like 16 screws.
>>

has a serviceable and replaceable battery behind screws. get a screwdriver kit and stop being a bitch.

Sure, everything is 'replacable'. But looking at how it's assembled there's a few ways you can fuck it up. I'm afraid I'm not autistic enough for precise laptop surgery.

Also, the xps13 offers 4 pre-configured models. If you want a decent xps13 you have to shell out $1500. And I've never seen a Dell last more than 2 years. I'm predicting wobbly hinges...

>>54330733

I just got a w520 and fixed it up. 16GBs ram and I got the one with nvidia video built into the motherboard giving me two graphics options. Has a 1080p screen and the last of the good laptop keyboards and the little mouse clit. Its not my favorite little rubber piece but changing it is easy. The rubberize coating on mine is unbelievably good condition. And if it was shit like the t520 I got you can do a vinyl wrap. There is a 3m carbon one that is sweet.

I could do vms and hardware pass through which I might for DBA stuff that requires windows.

No matter what I wouldn't buy a new laptop. Ebay or refurbished from electronics stores like micro center newegg whatever. No one is increasing hardware power so its not like they are slow or anything. And autistic as the thinkpad people get they are right. They are the best laptops.

Ebay my man.

Just found a Dell Precision M6700 in a pawn shop for $249, a fucking steal if there ever was one:

- Intel Core i7-3720qm proper quad (4 cores/8 threads)
- 17.3" IPS (yes, the IPS display, 1920x1080)
- 16GB DDR3 (4x4GB)
- 250GB Intel SSD (only 5 months old, whoever owned the laptop pawned it almost when they got the SSD so it has almost no usage at all) + 1TB Hitachi 7200 rpm storage drive
- Nvidia Quadro K4000M GPU (based on the GTX 680M) w/4GB
- everything works
- not one mark on it cosmetically
- battery has about 12% wear on it (so 88% capacity)
- factory 240 watt adapter
- god damned monster mobile workstation

I check eBay for similar machines and people want $650+ for it.

>made out like a fuckin' bandit on this one

I bought a Samsung R509 back in 2008 and it still works to this day.

I never cleaned it tho, and it's throttling. Back in 2008 I would get 100 fps in CS1.6, I get 4 fps now.
>>
Does anyone use the Dell XPS 13 with QHD and a window manager like i3?
How usable is it (are there any scaling problems)?
How much battery life do you get?
>>
>>54341564
Nice catch, m8
I got lucky enough with a T540p with a fairly shitty CPU, i3-4000M, but it has FHD screen, 8GB single channel ram(so I could upgrade to 16 easily if I wanted), a 7200rpm 500GB drive, still working battery and a year official warranty
Paid 390 euros for it, which is still the cheapest I could ever find, when even some older models go for more
>>
>>54341564
That's a great find.

Sadly I don't live in a fascist state where lots of people have to pawn their valuables to survive. =/

I don't have a problem with refurbished electronics. I bought my Asus tf101 tablet on eBay for $100 shipped. No scratches or cosmetic defects of any kind.

The thing is I need my laptop to last. So if I'm gonna use it for the next 5+ years it makes no sense to buy a 1-2 year old laptop. I want to get something top of the line now so it can last.

For now I'm gonna put an SSD into my HP 2730p and a USB3.0 adapter (two ports) into my ExpressSlot/54. So that should keep it going until Christmas when hopefully Lenovo will have a sale.

>fascist state

I live in Las Vegas, and I find great deals like this all the time at pawn shops in the downtown area because stupid fucking tourists come here for gambling or conventions or hookers and drugs or some combination of all of it and when they lose everything they've got they end up pawning off their business laptops and other items to get enough cash to make it back home which means I get fantastic deals on fucking awesome hardware at cheap prices.

I win, they lose, and I'm ok with that, really.

Because in 1080 screens objects are too small to click/read/tap; people really hate higher pixel-density screens because this.

Exactly. Buy well once and you're set for the next half decade.

Not wanting to spend $1000+ every two years on a laptop has nothing to do with being poor, it has everything to do with good money management. Those $1000+ can be spent on something else. Like a chink motorbike, for example.
