Just get a compiler/interpreter (for javascript any web browser will do) and start programming and read up on languages online. If you're learning a language in the C family it's a good idea to learn how pointers work.

C teaches you about pointers and stuff. Unless you plan on NEVER doing low-level stuff, it's better to learn that first before getting into OO.
