Election is coming up soon and I am wondering if there are any parties genuinely working towards better internet infrastructure in our country?

Personally I think the only real solution at the moment is to break up telstra.
>>

/devilish/
Bumping as I want to know too~
>>
>>54319583
The internet infrastructure is never going to get better. Also thanks for reminding me of Metadata retention.
>>
>>54319583
>any parties genuinely working towards better internet infrastructure
Pirate Party, Greens, Labor. Although Labor might need a kick in the pants to properly ditch FttN and go back to their original plan. Really just about anyone who isn't LNP affiliated.

>only real solution is to break up telstra
This was part of the original NBN FttP plan. Telstra was going to become just another ISP owning minimal last-mile infrastructure.
>>
>>54319583

Only the greens give a fuck about online privacy and better internet infastructure, too bad they'll never have any real power as nobody ever listens to them. Malcom turnbull is seriously fucking up the internet and nobody cares, it pisses me off to no end. Mandatory data retention, huge botnet data centers, laws that let companies block websites they don't like and the neverending torrent of "cyberwar" propaganda... Good job australia, orwell would be proud. Just kill me now.
>>
>>54319749
working at a government sponsored monopolist is usually pretty awesome.
>>
>>54319583
My internet isn't that bad.
I just don't know who to vote for. Turnbull's stance on illegal immigrants is pretty good, but I don't know about him.

None of them genuinely work towards bettering infrastructure. They're all more interested in cockblocking each others projects and bills. Liberal only wanted to get into power to put a halt to the NBN project to waste money then change the plans to waste more money so they can say " XDDDD LOOK HOW INCOMPETENT LABOR IS XDDDD LOOK ALL MONEY THEY WASTED XDDDD ".

Also privatising the internet industry (i.e splitting telstra up) is bad. Why is this bad? Look at the US. All of the ISP's there monopolise the shit out of it all. None of them will improve their infrastructure as they dont want to spend ANYTHING. They literally have laws in place that make it ILLEGAL at the highest point for another ISP to sell in their "hood". They will literally assassinate any competition.

>>
>>54319877

ISP's have been given tax brings that go into the trillions. Yet none of them have spent a dime on infrastructure in the past 20 years.

Greens and labor fucked up the NBN by jumping into bed with helstra and holding up the deal they should have just let their network rot and start making a entirely new network.

Liberal Nationals you should absolutely NOT vote for if you want any decent internet.

So basically donkey vote or vote for a small party and put up with horrible internet in the meantime.

Seriously though, I have been considering the idea. Not for your retarded reason, but because I want to change the accepted business model. Imagine if internet was a flat rate for the speed tier, then you pay the ISP for downloads and the ISP pays you for uploads. Suddenly the ad-based revenue model that is the cancer killing the web has no more justification.

>Personally I think the only real solution at the moment is to break up telstra.

this most likely won't make our internet infrastructure better.

the NBN has consolidated internet providers and internet infrastructure. NBN, telstra, optus, TPG, M2.
>>
>>54319723
>Although Labor might need a kick in the pants to properly ditch FttN and go back to their original plan.

labor have said that they will go back to FTTP but if you get FTTN before then, bad luck.

Consolidation is a natural consequence of cutthroat competition once all the innovation has been shaken out. The trick, if you want to keep the economy running smoothly, is to prevent *complete* consolidation. Something like the four pillar thing we've been doing with the banks.

Aside from the numbers being small as fuck (thanks Europe for being such a great diversion!) sensible policy would be to have the detainment centres on the mainland, treat the seekers humanely, and process them in a reasonable timeframe. >make gubbermint agency for actual infrastructure
>build nation wide fiber network over the next decade or so
>make it available to any private ISP which can then offer actual services (build their own datacenters etc. on the respective nodes)
>makes room for more competition because ISPs don't have to get expensive permits and cabling work etc.
>use income from ISP rent to slowly pay back investments etc. that were needed to build fiber network
>fiber agency slowly becomes profitable, any profit not used for maintenance and staff costs will be issued as tax return to citizens

Better to just put it into revenue, to pay down debt, or something else.

But as a general rule, the government doesn't like to make its own money or have its own stuff. Even government department buildings that have been occupied by them for decades are owned privately and leased long term to the government.

>>
>>54319875
No you have it backwards. It is bad because Telstra WASN'T split up.

They own the lines AND your retail plans just like it is in USA, except the USA has several large companies that own significant landlines (Comcast, Verison etc) that control their little mini-monopolies, whereas all we have is the great orange monolith that is Telstra.

That was the entire point of the NBN. To take the countries infrastructure out of the hands of a private entity that is letting it fall apart because they refuse to spend any money keeping it up to standard. Kill off Telstra's infrastructure side and let the retail half compete with the rest of the ISPs on an even playing field.

New Zealand did it right. They sold their national telecom provider but kept the landlines. The wholesale landline owner (Chorus) is now rolling out FTTP with no opposition because the government doesn't have to fuck around negotiating with a private company like ours had too. They told them to build it and the fucking did.
We did it once with Labor because we needed access to the ducts to pull fiber through, plus cash incentive to Telstra so they would cut their customers over to the fiber and shut down the copper.
BUT THEN
Liberals decide to waste BILLIONS more money by fucking up the process and go with FTTN because politics. To build FTTN you need a copper network, a copper network the government SOLD OFF. So back to the negotiation table to hand over a FUCKLOAD more money because FUCK equal playing field, we have party donors to suck off and a country to screw over! Go team LNP!

Telstra's network needed to be re-nationalised but the copper is useless. So we started to build a better one in its place to fix Howard's monumental Telstra fuckup back in the 90's and the Liberals just swoop back in and shit all over it because they are a bunch of socially disconnected and corrupt Tories with no vision.

You don't. Read your contract. Or call up and swap for free if there are available ports.

You get the fastest speeds available for the chosen technology type. If you were contracted for ADSL/Cable, you get the fastest available one selected by the sales consultant at the time. Also, you might be getting ADSL2+, but the distance and line quality to the DSLAM brings the speed down to ADSL quality. Check your router. If the DSL Modulation type lists anything other than "ADSL_G.dmt", you're probably on ADSL2+. You can also ask Bigpond to resync your line, or force it by unplugging your DSL cable for 30 minutes.

the amount of money we spend on keeping those people on manus island is actually tiny compared to the amount of money it would cost to bring them into the community, because we have such expensive, comprehensive refugee settlement programs.

and they're not indefinite detainment torture camps - at any given moment all people on manus island can elect to move to cambodia, they just choose not to.

The reason labor get behind this solution as well as the liberals is because its actually a very cost effective and socially just program that is massively misunderstood by the general public.

>>
>>54321868

sounds like you wanted to get balls deep in PERSONAL REASONS

>>54321858

its not just the gooks coming here en masse, its also ridiculous government policy on housing. negative gearing is about 30% of the problem. a huge part of the problem is this:

a significant amount of australian people own a house on a mortgage
a large amount of people in australia can't afford a house.

If house prices stay high, the poor people can rent from the rich people and society remains "stable". the poor people will still be happy to vote for whichever party.

if the house prices decrease, it will fuck the economy so almost nobody can afford to buy houses. and a huge amount of people will be extremely pissed off that the house they poured so much money, blood sweat and tears into just halved in value. When you're paying $800,000 to the bank over 20 years on a house now worth $500,000 you're gonna be militant.

so the easiest solution is to do nothing and appease the rich.

or just let more chinese in so that the moment someone gets a deposit and buys a house they are guaranteed to be on the gravy train for the rest of their life

>>54321941

>>
>>54322043
That's assuming the Chinese situation remains unchanged, but half the reason why the Chinese are buying up here is because of the political situation at home.
>>
>>54322098

we need a policy that will make house prices grow at 1% per year for a decade. reducing the value of house prices will make banks obscenely rich and fuck up peoples retirements because they will be paying way too much for their home in mortgage.

>>54322108

you are right. china is absolutely FUCKED financially and nobody realises it. in australia you get 80% LVR home loans. in mainland china you get 130% LVR home loans. which means they are going to have a fucking brutal crash there at some point.
>>
>>54322139
It's not just that, but the government crackdown on corruption and grey-market dealings that's sending the money out of the reach of the Chinese government, as well as a crackdown on personal and political freedoms after a couple decades of relative relaxation, and the central government trying to bring the special administrative areas under tighter control.

No, FTTP/FTTH is now the shit option.

FTTdp is the objectively superior option as it by passes the number one biggest cost with FTTP vs FTTN - the front year, driveway and house of the end user - digging that this up, chasing wirse through walls, remediation on completion, etc are the BIGGEST cost factors.

FTTdp does away with them by simply changing up the current FTTN plan with VDSL2 running from nodes no more than 1KM from your premesis, to VDSL2 running from the easement in the front of your property (or mdf if apartments/flats)
>bbbut muh fiber!
That's the BEST part - you can still have it!
If you need/want fiber, all you have to do is pay for the final work of running fiber from your driveway to where ever in your house - if you dig the trenching required it's ever cheaper!

>>54323821
Sure it's probably not an option for you - but it's an option that's available under the trial.

NBNCo is trialling FTTdp now, if the rollouts run according the plan and budget, it might(should) be replacing FTTN as the rollout method for future sites.
Cheap Fiber for those who want it, cheaper VDSL2 for those who simply don't care.
>>
>>54323902
I think you mean FTTN, not sure where you graduated, but it surely wasn't in another modern country where terminology is actually meaningful. I was even reading the leaks a few months even half a year ago which stated they were doing last mile coverage by copper that means anyone who falls short of that is fucked, and besides copper degradation is shit-tier.

What would be more interesting is if they went route of hybrid copper-optic internet (coaxial) and decided they were going to pump 100mbps through the fibre lines then do last mile @ 300mbps with existing.

Too bad we have a crazy fukken wallaby as our prime minister who is litterly cranking out cumshots for his American overlords in the northern territory.
>>
>>54323773
gtfo LNP shill, that "pay on demand" bullshit both costs more than just doing FttP and results in speed disadvantages, as Britain found out.
>>
>>54323902
Actually browsing through some of these articles released by the minister of telecommunications our prime minister herself ;) most of the terminology is corrupt, i mean most of the technologies are just existing off the shelf products which have been renamed for whatever reasons to shave costs?

also ADSL2+ ANNEX M should suffice for many poorer junkies/abos/bogans who are just streaming interacial anyway, oh wait most ISPs in Australia didn't even offer that when it was already available in exchanges.

They need to break up Telstras monopoly which still exists (believe it or not) Do what they did in New Zealand, make a publicly funded company to look after the lines then sell spots in cabinets every 1KM or so.

Not sure what Australia is bitching about.
>>
>>54323951
You're not keeping up with the times mate.

FTTN is already rolling out.
FTTdp is in trials.

FTTN is roadside cabinets every few KM, connected via your old Telstra POTS line (and fiber from the node back to the nbnco depot)

FTTdp is Fiber to the Distribution Point, the idea is to run fiber all the way to the sidewalk/road in front of your house and end there - as the last ~50m is the most costly to install.
Standard installs will run VDSL2 from the pit in sidewalk/roadside (the single user 'dslam' will be connected the fiber and will be powered from the users premises via the phone cable)
Otherwise the user has the option of a full fiber install, which will incur a cost (~$800 or ~$350 if no trenching is required) if they so desire.

>>54324025
You're trying to equate this with FTTN which is what you have, this isn't FTTN we're talknig about, we're already rolling that shit out, this is an alternative being trialled - much like how BT is now trialling Skinny Fiber as another alternative to FTTN

>>54324032
Annex M costs mo money, protip: it was close to $8 EXTRA per port licensing fee for on Ericsson dslams - I don't know what Optus/Telstra/TPG paid, but both Adelaide ISPs that ran their own DSL networks used Ericsson and I know this for a fact as I worked for one of them (they're BOTH owned by iiNet now so who really cares)
Also I'm not if sure the shitty Optus Huawei dslams could even do Annex M...
>>
>>54324146

>FTTN is already rolling out
Since when? Last I heard they were bogged down in bullshit. Like they should be. And like they will be should I ever see one of the nodes. Motherfucker won't be a functioning node for long, let me tell you.

>has the option of a full fiber install for this low low cost!!!11
And if you add up the cost of doing proper FTTP in bulk and compare to the option bullshit, you will find just doing FTTP to be cheaper.

>you're trying to equate this with FTTN which is what you have
No, I'm one in an area that actually got the NBN before Turnbull and Abbott sabotaged it. As mentioned previously, if they tried to put me on FTTN I'd make sure they would have a broken node in short order. Not happy with their tens of billions of damage to the country's infrastructure prospects. Not happy at all.
>>
>>54324281
Check whirlpool, some of the first non-trial sites are even online now.

FTTN is (unfortunately) even rolling out in my area now - I've even got a RFS date of mid November...
It's too late for me, but hopefully FTTdp passes trials and replaces FTTN before too much 'damage' is done.
>>

>>
>>54324339
>FTTN is (unfortunately) even rolling out in my area now
Then as any good right-thinking, telstra-hating aussie it is your obligation, nay, your DUTY, to destroy any nodes you see. Possibly late at night while drinking with your buddies.
>>
>>54324402
That isn't going to fix anything, that's just vandalism mate.

Like straight up, doing shit like will costs NBNCo capital that could have been spent on nice things like FTTdp trials, which are hopefully going to save us from FTTN.

But being an idiot edgy teenager, you are potentially helping to keep us stuck on FTTN - what a cunt.

In any case, as I stated earlier, FTTdp is the future - FTTP is dead, too costly, FTTN is soon dead, too shit.
Turns out my pricing is old too, NBNCo are targeting a $250 install for fiber as per the delimiter leak (no cost upgrade from POTS to VDSL2 mode)

Those sealed dslams look pretty smexy in pictures too.
>>
>>54321580
Seems like the best way for Australia to treat it's "migrants" is to sink their boats at sea.
>>
>>54324483
>FTTP is dead, too costly
This is what is known as a lie. The purest, and utterest bullshit, in fact. The original plan would have made money, so the cost was irrelevant. The LNP had to sabotage the review in various dodgy ways to make it seem costly when it wasn't. And the total cost for FTTdp plus on demand fiber will be higher than just going with FTTP like in the goddamn original plan. And here you are advocating that people just roll over and accept FTTN when they could use appropriately applied violence to delay it enough for a change of government to stop being retarded. How's the shilling paying these days?
>>
>>54324592
You're missing the forst for the trees mate.
FTTdp IS FTTP, just with the last final step of running fiber up your driveway, removed - as that particular step is the most costly step in the whole operation.

Instead, the plebs who don't even know what a broadband is will get VDSL2+, served from a 1 port tiny little sealed DSLAM in their front yard.
If you want fiber, you pay $250 and BOOM fiber, with the EXACT SAME configuration the old Labor/NBNCo plan used.

It's shaving billions of dollars off the cost of FTTP by just removing the final step only - the only copper involved is the shit in your front yard and house - even then only if don't give enough of a shit to pay $250 for real full actual fiber.
>>
>>54324483
>>54324592
If it wasn't 3 bloody am I'd probably go dig up my stash of articles that show all the corrupt bullshit that's happened since 2013. He can join Abbott in the club of prime ministers that didn't serve long enough to get the higher retirement benefits.

>>
>>54324692
It's not 'economies of scale' it's people with fully concreted front yards or elaborate shitty rose gardens - after you dig their yard you have to remediate the site, replant their fucking roses, reconcrete their fucking driveway.
You have to do it too, because NBN isn't optional - you can't make someone choose between repairing their driveway and keeping their internet.

There is also the matter of idiots who'll sue over their precious fucking potplants or garden gnome or some other shit..

FTTdp bypasses them by leaving their shit alone, unless they CHOOSE it, in which case no one has to remediate shit, it's all on the homeowner.

>>54324724
Apartments/flats will continue to be FTTB as is the case right now but with an option to an approved cabler run fiber from your apartment to the MDF (with approval from body corporate/strata/building owner) at your cost, then NBNco will charge you another $250 to terminate that fiber in the MDF and run your line in bypass.
