I use Arch. Happy with it, but interested in building most shit from source. Google "linux distro build from source". First result "Gentoo".

Aaaaah...So that's why /g is so infatuated.

So, /g, Sell me Gentoo. Why would I use it? I'm quite techie, but I don't want to make my life too difficult. Am I going to spend my time doing maintenance if I use Gentoo?

You can't have both.

I mean I pretty much compile most stuff from source already. But I'm not a dev, I use my laptop for design shit. I don't want to end up incapacitated for three days while a client is waiting for my system to become usable again.

Gentoo != efficiency? (in terms of every day system, not in terms of system usage or resources)

Pic? Google "Einzo Pinup" or something like that

There is an insurmountably huge amount of stuff you don't realize is pre-compiled on your Linux distro already and Gentoo doesn't cover up the complexity of riding the bleeding edge, having to compile and debug broken packages on your own or make things easier.

No, it would be less efficient than using Arch surprisingly enough. Arch has better QA in place for their official packages surprisingly enough. This wasn't always the case, but lately it has been less of a problem.

Slackware or bust. Or follow the CLFS guide if you have enough beard.

you do not compile everything. the stage3 you will use contains a precompiled base system. just getting that out of the way, because there are literally people who do not understand this. everything after that is compiled but binaries are optional. if you use a inadequate computer (im speaking of netbooks, etc) then you should figure out how to get binaries, deal with the slow compile, or use another more powerful computer to compile. portage supports distcc as well. portage automatically grabs the dependencies packages needs and compiles them in order up to the main package. theres very little work to be done honestly. you will like gentoo. give it a try

Thanks, seems like a logical answer. I'll keep with Arch then. Quite fond of it.

I'll do some more research, but it seems I'll take Gentoo for a test drive when this laptop gets old and I get a new one.
